'Do not want any other child killed': Asansol Imam who lost his son in violence has message for all

Daijiworld Media Network

Asansol, Mar 30: For the past few days, Asansol in West Bengal has been in the news for communal violence that broke out over Ram Navami celebrations. While politicians have made irresponsible statements instead of brokering peace, it is the heartbreaking appeal of an Imam, who lost his son in the violence, that has brought tears in the eyes of the nation and helped restore peace in the region.

Clashes broke out during Ram Navami celebrations in West Bengal on April 25. On April 27, Sibtulla Rashidi, son of Imam Imdatullah Rashid went missing in the clashes. His body was found the next day at the Asansol district hospital, with injuries on his head and throat. As per reports, he was taken away by a mob and beaten to death, even as police failed to respond on time to the family's call for help.

Tension gripped Asansol as police vehicles were attacked, houses vandalised and buildings torched. The police and the state government seemed helpless as Asansol burned.

It was the words of Imdatullah Rashid that struck a chord with the Muslims who had gathered to retaliate. The Imam addressed a congregation of thousands at the funeral prayers of his son. With his 16-year-old son’s body lying before him, the Imam pleaded for peace in a brief address that left the entire crowd in tears, so much so that all of them returned to their homes.

"I have lost my son. I have not lodged any police complaint. Do not make it an issue. If you love me, then restore peace," Noorani Masjid Imam Imdatullah Rashid said.

The Imam made the impassionate appeal on Thursday when the body of the 16-year-old, who had recently appeared in this year's Class 10 board examination conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, was laid to rest at a burial ground in Asansol in the presence of about 1,000 people.

"My son has died, but I don’t want anyone else to lose his child. If you strike back, I shall leave this town," the Imam told the crowd.

Speaking to The Citizen website, the Imam said he did not want any other child to be killed and for peace to prevail. "My child has lived the life that Allah ordained for him. Now please ensure that no one else's child is killed, that there is peace and amity. If you love him, and me, do not turn to violence, but keep peace.

"It was clear to me that my child had died, there was nothing we could do about that, and it was thus my duty to ensure no other child died, no house was torched, no family bereaved," he said. "Islam is a religion of peace and amity, it does not preach violence and revenge."

The locals, touched by the appeal by the bereaved gather, decided to honour the Imam's words and worked on restoring peace and speaking to both the communities.

"If he could utter those words in such a state of shock, disobeying him would amount to dishonouring him," Prabal Roy Chowdhury, sub-divisional officer of Asansol said.

The industrial towns of Raniganj and Asansol hit the headlines after clashes between Hindus and Muslims erupted in West Bengal since Ram Navami celebrations on March 25.

A man was killed and several injured after Ram Navami procession allegedly tried to enter a Muslim-dominated locality in Raniganj on March 25. Three others also lost their lives in related incidents across North 24 Parganas and Purulia districts around that time.

Speaking at a conclave, organised by Aaj Tak channel, Prakash Raj to Babul Supriyo “Your leaders are good orators, they keep talking. Today when we are talking about cultural war, we are looking at your behavioural pattern. You know what culture is? All of us are artists here. We need to be more sensitive.
"Do you know the pain of somebody losing a son? The culture of any religion or human being is; The imam, who lost his son in the riots in Bengal said ‘don’t communalise this, I will go if you want.’ That is culture. You going there and saying ‘I will skin you’ is uncultured.”
On Wednesday, cops found a body of a 16-year-old son of a local Imam, who was allegedly kidnapped and beaten to death by Hindutva goons. The Imam, however, has become a hero because of his passionate speech urging Muslims not to avenge his son’s murder. He even threatened to leave Asansol if Muslims did not pay heed to his appeal. His speech, made soon after the burial of his son, Sibtullah Rashidi, brought tears to everyone’s eyes.
Recent 'Republic day' communal violence or Asansol on Ram Navmi are similar in pattern. It was rightly describe by Bareilly District Magistrate Raghvendra Vikram Singh in his twitter "A strange trend has started of late. Take processions forcibly into Muslim mohallas and shout Pakistan murdabad. Why so? Are these people Pakistanis?,” Sometimes they use 'nationalism' some time 'religion'.
For many years was told particular community is bad. But what we see is those who is us are really bad. It looks for power they will go to any level. The Asansol Imam deserves the gratitude of a nation whose TV news media has become grossly complicit in communalism & Anti-Muslim hatred.
"Those are the people who will have blessings and mercy from their Lord; they are the ones who are guided." (Quran Surat Al-Baqarah(the Cow) , 157)
The Imam who saved not just Asansol, but perhaps India from burning. Surely he will be rewarded by his lord for patience.

Its easy to preach peace when are not a victim of violence, but it takes a fearful (of Allah) soul & mind to maintain peace when you are most prone to command revenge.

Why we are not thinking of others when we are not capable to create a small things why we are taking life of others. Who authorize us to do that ? Religion is preaching peace then who is preaching of killing with reward of angels in heaven.

people should realize that we are Indians....Hindu Muslims or christian is just the faith we follow...politics(all parties) are dividing us and we are falling prey to their tactics...they wont be benefited by our death...they will just get a point to attack the opposition party...the people who suffer are our families...our parents,siblings,children...stop hating religions and learn humanity. Every religion is beautiful in its own ways..respect them..
stop calling Muslims as jihadis or terrorists..if all Muslims were terrorist the world would have ended long back...if all Catholics mission was to convert whole world would be filled only with Christians..politicians are provoking majority to hate minority while they themselves have Friends belonging to minority religion. ..
lets all learn to peacefully co-exist. and give a better world tomorrows generation.

I can not agree more with you. If everyone in India had the kind of secular views and thoughts like yours.. I m very sure, we would have had heaven on earth. Half the India would have been rich and no poverty at all. The reality is different due to few (little more than few - may be majority) power hungry, wealth hungry and criminal politicians. It is their ultimate goal of life to make a division of majority on one side to milk as many votes as possible. We the victims watch the symptoms of their ultimate deeds and face the wroth. How can someone one change these politicians? Ghandiji was one example.. similarly this Imam (with full respect and my head bowed to him) is another example. ....I think with these live examples we may be able to change hearts?.. still I have my doubts.....

Very well said Rhea in your comments... First of all we are Indians... Religion comes later on... Why to follow politicians?? However you support them (any party) at the end of the day they are not feeding us, it's we have to Shed our sweat and work hard by rubbing our ten fingers and eat with five... Good lesson set forth by Imam. May almighty grant him and his family to bear the loss of his beloved son... RIP dear baba...

Quote, "Ram Navami procession allegedly tried to enter a Muslim-dominated locality in Ranigan"
What is the logic in taking Ram Navami procession to Muslim dominated area ?
    Or
What is the logic in taking Eid Milad procession to Hindu dominated area?

Both are to trigger a communal clash. So that greedy politicians would get benefitted.

Who said it is "allegedly taken into Muslim area" and more over why govt is making the difference as "Muslim area" "Hindu area" India being a free country why govt should restrict /ban the procession in particular areas ? Even during Durga Pooja one religion was given preference over other religion by the so called secular govt of chindi. Hope better sense will prevail in the state

Your logic is perfect but it seems deep inside you Know very well why this procession was taken into that area and we all know how riots are pre-planned in this country...No support to procession with this kind of intent.Let processions be filled with divine chants or devotional songs not making show of strength and intimidating and assaulting others because we are big in numbers.

The logic behind taking procession in muslim dominated area is to incite violence through provocative slogans. It has become the trend of these riot groups around every corner of the streets across the nation. We been personally experiencing such things currently in DK and Udupi districts as well.

Mobs , hatemonger politicians and people who get a wierd kind of happiness when watching, reading and listening to religious or any other form of violence do not realize the pain of death until they experience the same happening to their own lives ones. But by then it is too late to douse the fire which they have supported directly or indirectly.. God bless this Imam who had the courage to say such words even in such difficult and sad circumstances.
