The arrested culprits are identified as Deepak Kumar (25), a native of Chhattisgarh and Girwar Singh (25), a native of Madhya Pradesh. They were arrested in connection with the murder of Sharana Basappa (26), a resident of Rona, in Gadag district of Karnataka.

Sharana Basappa's dead body was found in a decomposed state in a land belonging to a private person in Katukukke at Perla. Police had registered a case of unnatural death at the time of recovery of the dead body.

In the post-mortem report, it was concluded that this is a case of murder. A heavy blow to the backside of the head was cited as the reason for the death. Police who investigated this murder from various angles were successful in arresting the culprits.

Sharana Basappa was working as a coolie in the surrounding areas of Vittal and Puttur since the last 10 years. The last work he did was in Jogi Math Vittal. He subsequently, went to Katukukke in Perla on December 9, 2017, along with a co-worker from Vittal and joined for work in a welding shop. On that day, he resided in a rented room which was near his place of work.

On the next day, that is December 10, 2017, a borewell drilling truck was parked outside his room. He got acquainted with Deepak and Girwar, who were working as labourers in this truck and all three of them started playing game of cards in Sharana Basappa's rented room.

An argument ensued between Sharana Basappa and the other two on the money matter when Sharana Basappa won many games in a stretch. In the heat of the moment, Deepak brought a stone and hit Sharana Basappa on the head. Sharana Basappa collapsed on the spot and died. Deepak and Girwar hid his body in the toilet of the rented room. Later late in the night, they threw his body to the land filled with forest near Katukukke in Perlathadka. They cleaned the rented room of Sharana Basappa and hid the stone used for the murder under the stack of dried leaves. They also burnt their clothes which contained blood stains and escaped from the spot.

The incident came to light when a person, who went to collect firewood from the forest, saw the decomposed body of Sharana Basapppa. Badiyadka police who got the information had visited the spot, conducted the investigation and shifted the body to the Pariyaram medical college.

This case was a challenge to the local police. Police investigated the murder on scientific clues and the information given by locals.
