Could not understand logic behind demonetisation: Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy

Kolkata, Mar 22 (IANS): Describing himself as "not an expert on economics", Infosys co-founder and India's IT industry doyen N R Narayana Murthy on Wednesday said he could not understand the logic behind the Narendra Modi government's note ban move in November 2016, particularly when it remonetised the monetary system with same or even higher denomination currency notes.

He, however, felt the demonetisation move was largely welcomed by rural people but not by the urban intellectual.

"Though I am not expert, but as a lay person I saw that when, for some reason, old notes were demonetised, the government introduced new notes pretty quickly of the same denomination and even of higher denomination. Only an expert can answer why this happened. I cannot understand... you should talk to experts," Murthy said at an interactive session with the students of Presidency University here.

Murthy further said, "I am not an expert in economics but I saw that urban intellectuals did not buy the idea of demonetisation, but a majority of rural Indians seemed to have welcomed it."

Emphasising on striking a balance between automation and human beings, he said: "We can take a decision...we will not follow automation up to certain level of our manufacture or services."

Murthy also stressed upon the transformation of culture and mindset of people of India before the economic transformation.

"There is a need for cultural transformation and that is more important than economic transformation. Unless there is cultural and mindset transformation, economic transformation cannot take place," he said.

Narayana Murthy has released now although late that demonetisation of November 2016 is a failure. The currency circulation is back to pre demonitisation levels. Still currency has not been counted and god knows how many fake notes entered RBI system. RBI is silent on this. Actually it gave black marketeers a chance to white illegal money. Only common people suffered for no fault of them. Some feel it was done to help his friends gio and paym .

Remonetisation had to be done in a very fast time. There was no way small currencies were made available to replace old higher denomination currencies in the short span of time. it would have taken years and caused lot of logistical problems. hence 2000 rupees was broght in. The idea seems to be to demonetise Rs. 2000/- once the panic situation is over. However, guaging the mood of the people and the political ramification in the 2019 elections has pushed the government on back foot. There is a likelihood of demonetisation of Rs. 2000 notes after 2019 elections if BJP comes to power.

Demonetisation logic can only be understood only by economic illiterates that form the rank and file of RSS-BJP. The semi-literate and illiterate members of the BJP get their economics education from movies and old wives' tales.

    Narayana Murthy Sir,
    I assume the following,
BJP knows very well that all the politicians are holding black money.
Prior to UP elections, BJP wanted to launder all their own stock and then demonetized currency so others will be effected to spend for the election canvassing. So, BJP will have win win situation.

Demonetisation was good for the country..
Reasons as stated by Mr.Flavian in his comment.
Implementation was bad and fine without drawing any rules for ground level functionaries like banks.Banks made denetisation a misery..
Many managers made lot of money by was of commission.Had there been proper rules to follow ,banks would not have done the damage..
After demonetisation new notes of RS.1000 should have been released instead of RS.2000 denomination notes.New notes if RS.2000 now again went out out if circulation by black.money hoaderers..
Demonetisation has done more damage to the economy than good.
Country has gone decade back on economy.. lot of business units closed ,agricultural sector sustained huge loss during initial period of three months.

A C T These three Industries suffered Most.

    A: Agriculture
    C: Construction
    T: Textiles

The Ist Jab : DEMONItisation had a telling effect leaving 200 + dead
The 2nd Jab: GST : Knocked down whatever energy was left in ACT

In 4 years time the Country has regressed 400 years
IN another 6 years the Country will go back to the 10th Century.

NRN is in his own world and is sadly unaware of the ground reality.

NM IS RIGHT IN HIS SAYING AS HE COULD NOT UNDERSTAND BUT COMMON MAN KNOWS HOW THE BLACK MONEY RIDE ON THEM AND IT NEITHER A COMMON MAN NOR A GENTLEMAN LIKE NM HAD SUFFERED EXCEPT SOME SHORT TERM CURRENCY PROBLEM BUT THOSE WHO HAVE KEPT THE CURRENCY IN STORE BEYOND LIMIT HAD SUFFERED A LOT AND ALSO FEARED TO DO SO IN FUTURE. ONE MORE INTENTION WAS TO FIND OUT DUPLICATE CURRENCY IN CIRCULATION WHICH MAY RESULT IN COLAPSE OF ECONOMY.

Narayana Murthy is right. Modi has only repeated English Policy Divide and rule, he has divided the country into poor and Rich and has instigated poor against rich and have projected himself ROBIN HOOD. The reality is Poor has lost due to Demonetization and rich will become more rich. It is a confirmed fact that there has been substantial loss of Jobs, the Looser is Poor, There has been reduction in Interest on Deposit by bank the looser is poor and the gainer is Rich Class the interest income of poor has been transfer
