Mangaluru, Mar 22: The police officials have clarified that no action has been taken against the police personnel involved with the caning of a crowd of Congress workers for unruly behaviour at Kallapu during the visit of All India Congress Committee president, Rahul Gandhi, to Ullal Dargah on Tuesday March 20.

They were reacting to widespread criticism of the police action expressed through various websites, after rumours about suspension of police official in this connection got wide publicity through the media and social websites.

At the same time, a large number of people, through posts made in social websites, have demanded for initiating of action against Congress workers who had boarded police vehicle and travelled by it, waving the party flags during Rahul's road show. City police commissioner, T R Suresh, stated that he will hold police investigation into this episode.

Rahul Gandhi had visited the Dargah at Ullal after the conclusion of the party workers convention held at Nehru Maidan on Tuesday. On the way, large number of party workers had assembled near Kallapu and Ullal Dargah. To control the teeming crowd, the police had resorted to light lathi charge. Several youth Congress workers had objected to this action of the police, and conveyed their resentment to minister, U T Khader. The minister had accordingly conveyed his dissatisfaction about the incident to the chief minister. The chief minister, on his part, had instructed the police commissioner to look into the matter and take appropriate action.

It was widely publicized that the commissioner had suspended certain policemen and issued show cause notice to deputy commissioner of police. The commissioner clarified that no one has been suspended in this connection, and no show cause notice was served to anyone. He however said that the department has been looking into the reasons for the caning. Towards this end, details of measures undertaken by the police to control the mob during Rahul Gandhi's visit are being pooled together, he explained.
