Siddaramaiah's Lingayat card puts BJP in 'catch 22' situation

Harsha Raj Gatty

Mangaluru, Mar 21: The otherwise aggressive game-plan of BJP has received a major setback, as close to polls the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah's cabinet approved separate minority religion status to Lingayat and Veerashaiva-Lingayat groups.

With over 17 percent of the state's population comprising Lingayat members that are spread across the state, the political parties are well aware that the section can be a major game changer in the upcoming polls. Relying on the recommendation of retired Justice Nagamohan Das-led seven-member panel, the Karnataka cabinet conveniently approved minority status to these groups. By passing the buck to the Central government, the Congress has now left a sword hanging over BJP's head.

If the Central government gives assent to the demand, the Congress will claim credit - if it doesn't, then the wrath of the Lingayat and Lingayat-Veerashaiva community members may cause a dent on BJP's vote-bank. In the electoral history, Lingayat community has always favoured the BJP over other parties.

But post the Congress recommendation, the BJP's chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa, whose otherwise claim to fame was as the dominant leader of the Lingayat community is now scampering to look for a new narrative to defuse the ploy by the Congress.

However, it’s not like the entire Lingayat community is going to be in awe with the Congress for its decision unless they start deriving the benefit. Certain section of the group has seen through the political timing of the decision. In fact in 2013, the then UPA government at the centre had turned down the demand for the 'independent' religion status by the group citing that it would further divide the society. Ironically, it has come into light that Yeddyurappa was a signatory to the petition sent to then PM Manmohan Singh under the banner of All India Veerashiva Mahasabha, but now has decided to remain mum.

With this latest move, of course the Congress-led government has made a dent in BJP's armour, by beating the BJP in its own game of polarisation politics.

The community which has its presence spread at close to 100 of the 224 constituencies cannot be sidelined if the parties are serious about contesting the upcoming polls.

It was recently that the CM Siddaramaiah government unveiled what they declared a state flag and sent to the central government for approval. This along with the soft-Hindutva approach by the Congress, both are slowly paying their dividends to the party, at a time when they desperately looking to deflect the 'nationalism' overtones of the BJP campaign and before the model code by the Election Commission of India is in effect.

The Karnataka government’s decision to accord an independent religion status to the state’s powerful Lingayat community has kicked off a huge political storm just before the crucial elections. The BJP’s has sensationally alleged that the Congress government was trying to divide the Hindu community to stay in power.
The many Swami's and Modi Bhaktha don't even know, BJP’s BS Yeddyurappa was signatory to petition demanding separate religion for Lingayats. The community’s demand to be treated as separate from Hinduism is years old, says SM Jaamdar, a leading advocate of religious minority status for Lingayats.
In fact a bigger agitation is going on in Maharashtra since 2014. The Maharashtra state government had already resolved to recommend it to the Centre in 2014, [during an] August 19 cabinet meeting. [It] had resolved to recommend…the notification of Lingayat as a minority religion. That was four years back. Now the same agitation has restarted there six months back and is going on. Their cabinet sub-committee met just last week again. So it is not just Karnataka it is Maharashtra also. Now it has begun in Telangana and Tamil Nadu as well.
Now you see there are one-and-a-half-crore Lingayats in Maharashtra, 80 lakh people in Telangana, around one crore in Karnataka and about 50 lakh people in Tamil Nadu. All these spread from that one place after the revolution. It ignited a revolution because Basavanna arranged the marriage of an SC young man with a Brahmin girl. That resulted in clashes between Hindu orthodox people and the followers of this particular religion. In that more than 50,000 people were butchered by the royal forces. The king himself was murdered on this account.
The BJP, supported by RSS and Hindu Sanatan Dharma, has to say that because this [Lingayat] is the religion that rose against that kind of orthodoxy.Politically 'Lingayat' voted for BJP all this years. But never accepted their demand of separate religion.
Is BJP goes against RSS ideology?

Congress govt in Karnataka has passed a motion to make Lingayats a separate community separate from Hinduism.Anyone who opposes this movement, its time to show your loyalty to Dharma by coming forward & speaking to people directly and preventing this division of Hindus. Hindus are already divided in castes & creed and this another division happening right under our watch. This must be stopped.
The approval of Lingayats as a separate religion is a conspiracy to disintegrate Hinduism. There is nothing to separate worshippers of Shiva Linga from Hinduism. Center must think long term, reject the proposal, and expose true motives of this gimmick.
If Linagayats are not Hindus, then tomorrow Congress will say Arya Samajis are also not Hindus. Advaitins are not Hindus. Swaminarayans are not Hindus. Shaivas are not Hindus. Vaishnavas are not Hindus. It seems only Rahul Gandhi will be the only Hindu left!

Those 'sour grapes' BJPians who say this will boomerang on the Congress know down inside that it will only further help the Congress and damage the BJP because now more and more sects within the Hindu fold will be encouraged to ask for separate religion status.
Lingayat matter is now with the Centre so why blame the Congress party or CM Siddaramaiah ? If Modi government think Congress is doing divide and rule let them reject it even before Karnataka assembly elections but they will not. Why ? because it will backfire on BJP.
That is why it is called a catch 22 situation for the BJP. They cannot support it nor can they reject it. They are caught between the devil and the deep blue see. All they can do is cry like losers blaming the Congress because they cannot take on CM Siddu's master stroke.
CM Siddu have proved to be a far superior Chanakya than Amit Shah.

Considering that Hindus (and Sikhs) went through bloody partion, it is sad that there is a rush to claim non-HInduness.
Equally sad to see political support for such movements.
The best solution to this and many other problems that is breaking and damaging India is to restrict voting to only to Hindus (and those who accept that they are Hindus).
Let us see how many parties will champion so called minority rights when they no longer have votes.

In my point of view, Lingayat & veerashaiva's are Hindus.
I can say Hindus is a tree and Lingayat and Veerashaiva's are the branches of a tree.

Hence in my personal opinion, they should not be given minority religious status and reservations. Lingayat's and veerashaiva's think they are of higher castes same to Shivalli brahmins.

For Hindus and Lingayat's Shiv Linga is main and they worship Shiva Linga. Hence there is no difference in worships to Hindus verses Lingayat's-Veerashaiva's.

Yeddy was jealous of Christians (hence he supported church attacks) having minority status. Hence he thought of giving minority status to Lingayats and wrote letter to UPA.

After BJP losing to elections, Siddharamaiah has carried out vulnerable developments and welfare programmes to the Karnataka people.

Once Daaku came to Karnataka to incite communal violence in Karnataka Yeddy card of Lingayat's was inevitable.

What Humble Chief Minister Siddharamaiah has done to Lingayat was correct. So that Yeddy may lose elections and the Congress get Lingayat's votes.

Whatever be the reason, Chaaiwaala of the centre will not pass the bill in a hurr-burry-however, he will keep it pending.

By the meantime, Congress has already divided lingayat's votes to Yeddy and Congress.

Even if Lingayat's votes are not there Congress is a real winner in the next elections.

    Jai RauluJil
    Jail Chaaiwaala.

Matured and educated people love to live with humanity without the walls of religion in public life! Congress gives equal imortance to all religion hence Congress is comprised of all religion people and mostly all MLA's of Congress are doing a good job in respective constituency.
