Mangaluru: APD Foundation to observe World Water Day on Mar 22

Media Release

Mangaluru, Mar 21: APD Foundation in collaboration with Yenepoya Institute of Technology and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board will observe World Water Day on March 22 at YIT Campus, Thodar, Moodbidri at 1:00 pm. Competitions like elocution, quiz and sketching will be conducted on the theme ‘Nature for Water’. Yenepoya institutions are known for their nature friendly campuses having elaborate rain water harvesting and water conservation facilities. This is part of APD Foundation’s yearlong resolution to celebrate all the eco-friendly days.

World Water Day is observed on March 22 every year to focus attention on the importance of water, to raise awareness and inspire action to tackle water and sanitation issues. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.

Damaged ecosystems affect the quantity and quality of water available for human consumption. Today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home; affecting their health, education and livelihoods. Nature-based solutions have the potential to solve many of our water challenges. People need to do so much more with ‘green’ infrastructure and harmonize it with ‘grey’ infrastructure wherever possible. Planting new forests, reconnecting rivers to floodplains, and restoring wetlands will rebalance the water cycle and improve human health and livelihoods.

Karnataka has seen an alarming rate of decrease in groundwater levels and studies reveal that half the rural population is likely face drinking water shortage. Even though Mangaluru and surrounding districts have enjoyed abundance of water, it is not expected to be so in the future. With the present rate of industrialization and pollution the city might face severe water issues in no time. It is time for authorities, the city dwellers and various organizations join hands in conserving water, protecting water and acting against those who pollute our water sources.
