Sullia, Mar 18: Saltadi Gopi (30), resident of Nalkur village near Guthigar, Subrahmanya, hanged herself along with her 30-month-old daughter, Anvika, on Saturday March 17.

Gopi was the wife of Yatish Maniyani from Saltadi. Yatish, who works as mason, had left for work as usual on Saturday. The couple's elder daughter was away from home, attending Anganwadi nearby. A woman living in the neighbourhood who was passing by the house of Gopi saw the mother-child duo hanging from a rope in the shed adjacent to Gopi's home. She immediately informed the others. By the time the husband and others rushed to the spot, both the child and its mother were no more.

The scene of the duo hanging from a single noose provided a heart-wrenching sight for the villagers. Gopi's elder daughter, who came home later, found that her mother and younger sister, who had seen her off in the morning, were no more alive. No one was able to perceive the actual reason behind these deaths.

Subrahmanya police have registered a case and begun investigation.
