Bengaluru: Siddaramaiah flags off Kannada identity politics - Approves separate state flag

Bengaluru, Mar 8: Deftly carving out the ruling Congress party’s electoral strategy for the forthcoming assembly elections in Karnataka, the State Government has accorded its formal approval for a separate State flag featuring three colours of yellow, white and red with Karnataka’s official emblem – Gandaberunda – at the centre.

Gandaberunda, the State’s official emblem, is a two-headed mythical bird that represents Karnataka.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who announced the formal approval for the recommendation by the nine-member committee headed by Kannada Development Authority Chairman S G Siddaramaiah, said the separate State flag has been a long-standing demand of Kannadigas and several pro-Kannada organisations.

Kannada Development Authority Chairman Siddaramaiah, in the report submitted to the Chief Minister recently, had recommended a tricolour flag for the State and even suggested the colour scheming.

The government panel had suggested that the official flag should replace an unofficial two-coloured one that is being widely used by pro-Kannada organisations.

With the decision of approving the design and colour scheming of the State flag, the State Government is now all set to make a formal application to the Centre seeking a separate flag for Karnataka.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has been cleverly playing the Kannada identity politics and invoke the spirit of Kannada pride, has made it clear that a separate flag for a State is not unconstitutional as there is no specific bar on State’s having separate flags.

"As long as the State does not show disrespect to the national tricolour and hoists the State flag below the national flag, there is no problem. We are a law abiding people. While Karnataka is our homeland, India is our country," Siddaramaiah said and pointed out that the State Government would send its application to the Centre shortly. "We hope it will be approved quickly," he said.

It may be recalled that the Chief Minister had been vehemently opposing the imposition of Hindi, especially in the signages of Namma Metro, which has maximum funding from the State.

The State Government would make a formal application to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, under whose purview the issue falls.

The chosen design of the flag incorporates red and yellow strips, with white in the middle and the State emblem is at the centre but without the words ‘Satyameva Jayate’ displayed in the National tricolour keeping various norms in mind.

The committee opted for a design which carries the spirit of the existing yellow-and-red Kannada flag’ with white colour at the centre.

The State emblem would figure on the white, said a member of the committee.

By making a formal application, the government is lobbing the ball in the Centre’s court, and it could be an added agenda in poll-bound Karnataka to claim regional identity under the federal structure.

The pro-Kannada groups, who have been vehemently demanded official state flag, have raised issue about the official flag for the state.

If Ministry of Home Affairs clears the proposal, Karnataka will be the second state after Jammu and Kashmir to have an official state flag.

It may be recalled that a home ministry official had earlier said that there was no legal bar on a State having a separate flag as it represents people and not the government.

The unofficial flag of Karnataka was not used at ceremonies like Republic Day or Independence Day but on occasions like the State’s foundation day, popularly known as Rajyothsava Day.

Who are these people to change the color design of our State Flag. There was a reason for a state flag in history and now some unknown people who call them selves as Kannada Association representing Kannadiga's have lost their mind. Can you Change the November 1st date of Kannada Rajostava - can't coz there is a reason and the same way there is reason why the color of state flag is designed - who gave the authority to change the State Flag in-deed did they really take the opinion of Karnataka Citizers before going to state approval. Government just using Associate a bate for Polling. Open up your minds and understand, be there to uphold the history and culture and not change the History and Culture of our state and pls do not bend to Politicians and be an independent body to save our Land, Cuture, History, People, etc.
I strong commend if approved by Central Government to change the State Flag.

Karnataka is not only about kannadigas. We Mangalorean are not native kannadigas or doesn't like calling us kannadigas. Why this biased decision from our CM for non kannada regions? Make separate flag for Tulunadu and kodavanadu too. All the people inside Karnataka will be happy. Best solution is to make separate state Tulunadu for better development and faster progress of our Tulunadu region.

already divided the country & introduced 2 flag in 1947. Now they are going implement one more flag. now a days divide & rule become common for vote bank politics. We have already seen the active participation of govt in dividing the veerashaiva lingayaths in the name of religion. earlier the govt introduced many schemes on the basis of religion, caste, hinda, ahinda etc. this kind of divide & rule system is very dangerous & the future generation will face the result.

It would be good for every state to have its own flag. Imagine the Indian flag and 29 state flags flying below them. It would appropriately display our unity in our diversity. It would also remind the federal rulers that they stand there because of the strength of vaious people of India and they have to rule judiciously.

For each and every Indian, the only Flag that should matter is the Indian tricolor. The day people understand this, all these stupid political gimmicks will fail miserably. All this is drama before elections.

The flag a “sign of Kannadiga pride” and a “historic decision”.
The Constitution does not say that the state should not have its flag, so I believe they will agree. As a country has a flag, in the same way in a federal system, there is no bar in the constitution for the state to have its own flag.
If the Centre agrees to the proposal, Karnataka will become the second Indian state to have a separate State flag, after Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir has its own flag due to its special status under the Constitution. “There is no opposition for States to have a separate flag in the Constitution. But, the State flag will always fly below the National flag, as prescribed,”.
‘Naada Dhwaja’ “sign of Kannadiga pride” and a “historic decision”.“It was the intention, opinion and voice of Kannadigas.”
If PM Modi's government in Jammu & Kashmir can salute to the state flag, I don't think Center will not go against aspiration of the Kannadigas.
    Jai Karnataka!
    Jai Hind!

Good Move ...Sidhu should break away from congress and form a regional party from karnataka ..
This is the only way to get what you want from the center.
Tuluvas should also work towards a separate state for Administrative reasons ..and for progress in line with expectations of the Tuluvas.

Flag is not the very needy for our state at the moment. This is one of the tricks to divide the state and provoke other states to follow this move so that people start forgetting National Flag.

True...but tuluva flag is not saffron flag ...Tuluva flag is deep red similar to the red in communist flag..😁(pun intended)
What I mean tuluvas shouldn't think their culture is due to saffron culture from cowbelt....Both are distinct...Nor they should think their culture is less worthy to that from sanghis from North and try to appropriate every culture of them to Sanghis inorder to gain acceptance from Sanghis...
I support Tulunadu also Kannada Nadu ...
What I mean idea of Dravida Nadu across South India can save respective culture from South from the onslaught of dominant Saffron Sanghi culture...If not you will loose your own culture
