Mangaluru, Feb 24: A glittering ceremony marked the annual day celebrations of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor here on Friday, February 23.

Addressing the gathering Praveen Kamath, general Manager and HR Head - Technology Practice Units, Wipro Limited said, “ I am honored to be part of this college day function. With an experience of 22 years in industrial field, I have seen level of competition rising as drastic changes are taking place globally. The real competition is with small colleges where a Class 12 student can form a program which an engineering graduate cannot. I want students to focus on their studies. You need to put up effort to scale up and compete with the outer world as marks scored by you will be the first source of truth. Only carrying costly mobile phone and laptop does not make you smart, but you need to work hard for it. College is just a study point.

“I want students to prefer certification course which will definitely compliment your work. I wish the very best for students for their future endeavors,” he said.

B B Shetty, head-regional, HR Tata Consultancy Services said, “As I am in IT sector, I prefer students with basic understanding of IT, decoding, programming and work in a team. Then it will be our responsibility to train the students in what we are operating. Many of the universities change the syllabus every now and then, but some change syllabus once in 12 years. That is the main problem which makes you outdated. If you keep 12 hours in a day to know what is happening around, the technology available around will definitely help you in your growth.”

Bishop of Mangaluru diocese and president SJEC Dr Aloysius Paul D Souza said, “I thank Praveen Kamath and BB Shetty for their thought provoking speech. I congratulate the students who brought laurels to themselves and the college. You are achievers, and not just performers. Students need to draw a blue print of life and career. The blue print should have a goal and desire to achieve greater heights. I thank the management, staff, and faculty members for their hard work put up and for making this college to reach where it is today.”

Students who achieved laurels in various spheres like sports, cultural activities and academics were honored on the occasion by the dignitaries. B B Shetty and Praveen Kamath were also felicitated.

Earlier, director of SJEC Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza welcomed the gathering. Principal of SJEC Dr Jospeh Gonsalves presented the annual report of the institution.

Assistant director SJEC Fr Rohit D’Costa, vice-principal SJEC Dr Rio D’Souza and others were present.

St. Joseph Engineering College at Vamanjoor renders ample memories of the past while we are reading about the College Day celebrations. We still remember the day when we visited the SJEC complex while it was under construction. Along with late Mnsgr. Fred Pereira we travelled to Vamanjoor and met Fr. Valerian along with whom we inspected the entire Engineering facility. The same night we had dinner together at our home and thanked God for all the merciful gifts bestowed upon us thru the Mangalore Diocese.

Since then, year after year, we have witnessed the progress and prosperity of SJEC and have also seen the Engineering Institution of Mangalore Diocese transformed into an exemplary Engineering College under the able leadership of Bishop Aloysius. All these accomplishments need people, people of exemplary vision and foresight.

Mangalore Diocese has been blessed, and we are all the beneficiaries of those blessings to witness so much of Educational progress under the leadership of Bishop Aloysius and entire congregation.
