I-T notice to Abhishek Singhvi's wife over jewellery bought from Nirav Modi

New Delhi, Feb 20 (PTI): The income tax department on Tuesday issued a notice to Anita Singhvi, the wife of senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, asking her to explain about jewellery purchases amounting to Rs 6 crore, allegedly from a showroom owned by beleaguered billionaire diamond merchant Nirav Modi, sources said.

Singhvi refuted the allegations made against his family and described the action as “harassment” being meted out to him as he belonged to an opposition political party.

The notice, sources said, was issued on Tuesday to Anita Singhvi asking her to explain how much she had paid in cash and through cheque to purchase the valuables and jewellery a few years back.

It is understood that the I-T feels that about Rs 1.5 crore was paid by cheque for the purchase of the jewellery, while about Rs 4.8 crore was paid in cash by Anita Singhvi.

The tax department wants to know the details of the transaction and the source of these funds as part of its tax evasion probe against Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, the promoter of the Gitanjali Gems group.

Singhvi denied all the charges against him on Twitter, saying they were false and that he would respond to the I-T notice “in accordance with the law”.

“...purchases of jewellery allegedly in cash by my wife based on someone’s computer entry are no evidence. All 1.56 cr (crore) paid for fully in chq (cheque) and accounted for with receipts by India’s highest taxpayer (Singhvi himself),” the Congress leader wrote on Twitter.

The Rajya Sabha member also claimed that he happened to be “India’s highest taxpayer in my category for many years and often even across diff (different) categories”.

“Purchases in chq (cheque) of large amts (amounts) all reflected in accounts.

“Harassment, innuendo, insinuation must have its limits. 1st leak to friendly media, then issue notice 2only one,” he said wondering if the tax department would issue notices to all those whose names were found from the records of Nirav Modi after different probe agencies recently raided premises linked to him and seized documents and computer peripherals.

Last week, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman had alleged that the Nirav Modi-run Firestone Diamond International had taken on lease a property of Adwait Holdings, a company in which Singhvi’s wife is a director.

Singhvi had threatened to slap civil and criminal defamation charges against Sitharaman if she did not apologise for “false and malicious” allegations.

Modi, Choksi and others are being investigated by multiple probe agencies after it recently came to light, following a complaint by the Punjab National Bank, that they allegedly cheated the nationalised bank to the tune of Rs 11,400 crore, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.

The Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate have registered two FIRs each to probe the case.

This is called BJP ka nautanki. 11,400 crore ka choona is not a big deal. But who bought from the idiot is a big issue. One has to learn from BJP how to twist the whole scenario.

This is what they have done for the past three & half years. What developments India have seen? Only blaming UPA government, corruptions, scandals, what else?

But BJP walo, India ka public har baar buddhu nahi banega.

Our I-T dept are a big jokers... the person who did a fraud he ran away, instead of getting him back they are trying to nail people who purchased from the jewellery shop. Tomorrow they may come after me because i had brought a set from Gitanjali... Why there are no quires or investigation how these people left the country, why the authorities are not going after the people who let them escape? After 2014 four or more then four people escaped from the country.

My comment on IT raid on Nirav Modi the previous article proves my comment is right, IT is the tool for BJP to target only opposition leaders & verbal order not to take any action of its party members & those who join them later.
Highest tax payer gets targeted with fake allegations, good news for looters!

This is intentional dragging and fixing the charges to cover up BJP's sins. This has no connection whatsoever with ongoing Nirav Modi's fraud scam. BJP is desperately trying to find and shift its dirty image on opposition. Pathetic BJP.

    OK... You mean
When BJP is in power, they should not probe Congress people
When Congress is in power, they should not probe BJP people

Finally as per you, when these politicians are to be probed?
