Mangaluru, Feb 18: The sixth additional district sessions court here, which conducted hearing into a case relating to cheating of a woman by extending to her promise of marriage and raping her, came to the conclusion that the accused was guilty. The court held that charge against Sathish (26) from Ladi Prantya Jyotinagara was proved . In all likelihood, quantum of sentence would be announced on Monday February 19.

Sathish had got to know a lady from Kadandale through cellphone in January, 2014. The lady was returning home by foot on December 17, 2014 after visiting her aunt living some distance away, when Sathish who came that way, gave the lady a lift by offering to drop her at her home. The lady said that Sathish instead took her to a field near her home and raped her, duly making her believe that he would marry her.

When the lady asked Sathish to marry her thereafter, he refused. He later married another girl. After coming to know about it, the lady filed a complaint against Sathish in Moodbidri police station on July 11, 2015. Tje then police inspector of Moodbidri station, Ananthapadmanabha, had investigated the case and filed charge sheet.

Sathish was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. He was later released on bail. He was taken into custody after being pronounced guilty and sent to judicial custody again.

The court examined 19 witnesses and 24 documentary evidences provided in the case.  Statements of the doctors and parents of the lady were decisive in tilting the judgement in favour of the victim. The court found that the case relating to cheating the lady through marriage promise has been proved but rape charge was not proved as the complaint was made with undue delay.
