Udupi: NSUI hold signature campaign, demand Students’ Right Commission

Media Release

Udupi, Feb 16: The district unit of National Students' Union of India (NSUI) on Thursday, February 16 held a signature campaign supporting NSUI which is running a national campaign for Students' Rights Commission.

Many students signed and supported the movement. Christan Almeida, NSUI Udupi district president, Marsh Sequeira, Prajwal Kunder, Llyod and many others were present.

Problems pointed out by NSUI

As students, especially first-generation learners, have absolutely no support system in case there is conflict between the university or college administration and student.

Exam management systems are neither transparent nor timely. Exam results are delayed and lack credibility - Overhaul of exam management system to bring transparency and ensure timeliness of results.

Education is increasingly getting privatized and access to poorer students is being denied on account of high cost of education - (Interest) waiver on student loans, Interest free/collateral free student loans.

There is apparent discrimination between rules and regulations governing private and public education institutions in the same stream - Bring parity between rules and regulations of public and private professional colleges

NSUI’s demands

Student Rights Act - We Demand Karnataka Government to pass an Act guaranteeing fundamental rights of all students in all universities whether public or private. The legislation can be drafted in consultation with students and faculty in an open consultative process to define the minimum non-negotiable rights of the student. Rights can include freedom of speech, timely exam results, transparent admission process etc.

Student Rights Commission - There should be state Students Rights Commission to adjudicate on violations of fundamental provisions of the Students Rights Act. The commission should ensure implementation of the Students’ Rights Charter and should be empowered to take suo moto cognizance of violations. Commission can have offices at the state, district and block level.
