PNB fraud case: ED conducts multi-city raids on Nirav Modi showrooms

Mumbai, Feb 15 (Deccan Chronicle): A team from the Enforcement Directorate led a multi-city raid on showrooms and offices of billionaire diamond jeweller Nirav Modi who is at the centre of a Rs 11,346 crore fraud in the Punjab National Bank, and possibly other lenders.

ED teams raided three sites in Surat, four in Mumbai and two in Delhi on Thursday morning.

PNB, the second largest public sector bank in the country, filed a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday against Nirav Modi and companies linked to him for defrauding the bank in connivance with bank officials in a Mumbai branch.

It is alleged Modi and his associate companies fraudulently acquired PNB guarantees worth $1.7 billion that they later used to obtain overseas loans. The bank alleged Modi worked with some junior PNB officials to get the letters.

The scam started in 2011.

While PNB did not name the other lenders, Union Bank of India, Allahabad Bank and Axis Bank are said to have offered credit based on letters of undertaking (LOUs) issued by PNB.

An LOU is a letter of comfort issued by one bank to branches of other banks, based on which foreign branches offer credit to buyers. Foreign bank branches too are under investigation.

Three other jewellers, Gitanjali, Ginni and Nakshatra are under the scanner with the CBI and ED looking at their arrangements with various banks and end use of money, a senior official of a public sector bank told PTI.

This could be the biggest banking fraud in India as its quantum was bigger than an estimated 9,000 crore scam at erstwhile Satyam computers.

Forget Modi's promise of the 15 lakhs coming into everybody's accounts. First under the guise of demonetization the poor lost their savings and their livelihood, then due to the ill baked GST the small traders lost their livelihood, now with this banking scam by his cronies, looks like the people will lose even their money in the banks..................

Along with Nirav, a host of others including the PNB deputy manager, Gokulnath Shetty are incuded in chargesheet.

Nirav grew up in Belgium where his parents are there doing diamond business. He came down to Mumbai to learn the trade with Mr. Choksi, his maternal uncle, the founder of Gitanjali gems, who is also in the list. Gitanjali shares had a life time high of 650 and today trading at 48. Nirav promised that he is going to sell his billion worth Firestar company and pay all dues. Let us keep our fingers crossed.

    I agree with Santan Mascharenhas.

At-least Nirav Modi is not saying like Mallya who still argues that he has done no wrong.

Nirav Modi must have started it with a small figure in 2011 which must have increased as years passed. And those associated with him may have enticed him in sucking more until nothing is traced.

Lets indeed keep our fingers crossed and wish that the authorities succeed in recovering the loss.

    Prakash,

You are confused the Modi's first name - its NIRAV, not NARENDRA. Therefore, stop hallucinating, nobody expressed desire that the latter Modi should leave. Nor, should the Daughter-in-Law come in marriage to Gandhi family and her son. Its alright if you don't want to take her name with respect, at-least please don't disrespect the Indian citizenship that is granted to her by marriage law.

Mr. Prakash, if Mr. Modi was going to build the nation he would have made a start by now. He has not done anything in the last nearly 4 years. He has not fulfilled any of his poll promises? So when is he going to build the nation - after he is booted out of power?

Nirav, now 46, the first Indian jeweller to get featured on the cover of Christie’s catalogue. PNB Flora Fountain branch is agog with all type of stories today. Nirav Modi's empire may come crashing at the same speed in which it took off in the first place. There is no shortcut to success and one can achieve their goal only through hard work and dedication and not by cheating.
