Mangaluru Feb 5: Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil opined that introduction of Electronic Road Price (ERP) for private vehicles within the city will help the smooth functioning of vehicles. He said will also ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Addressing the media, after a meeting with Road Transport Authority (RTA) officials here on Monday February 5, Sasikanth Senthil said, "The traffic is on the rise in the developing city of Mangaluru, which makes it difficult for the pedestrian to walk. Instead of repeatedly widening the roads, it is better to implement ERP for private vehicles which are unnecessarily entering the city,”

"This system has been enforced fully in Singapore. When private vehicles enter the city, a fixed amount is debited from the ATM card of vehicle owners. This will result in the smooth functioning of public transport and also will reduce the traffic congestion,” he added.

"Before enforcing ERP, the same will be discussed in a meeting with Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and other representatives. The amount for a particular vehicle for a particular region will also be fixed after taking suggestions from the representatives. The ERP will be introduced in phases," he informed.

"Old building and monuments may have to be demolished if the roads have to be widened to accommodate the rising traffic. Due to the increase in the number of vehicles, the city is facing high pollution. This has made people to avoid walking in the city. Instead of depending on vehicles for petty works, it is better for people to opt for a walk. Due to walk, the public can maintain good health and there will be more public space also,” he said.

"Our country does not have ERP system anywhere. If we enforce this in Mangaluru, then it will be a model for others. This should be enforced under smart city project,” he concluded.

Has our DC visited Singapore. Has he seen the roads there. Some what it rains everyday and I cannot find water flowing on the roads. That is the infrastructure there.

Here in Mangalore see the plight of the roads. Dc should’ve taken to Nanthoor, Pumpwell & KPT junction. At these places the fly over should have been built few years back, but the work was carried near AJ & at Kaikamba because the officials were sure at these 2 places fly overs were not needed & so the work was carried earlier.

Has the Dc or any one have the guts to remove the old buildings and widen the road. Dc has not guts to vaccate the vendors from State Bank. It is the high time that the present DC is kicked out from Mangalore.

    hi
yes , we should welcome the move with the following considerations
    1. Vehicles registered in managalore should be charged this EPR and road tax should be abolished for all these vehicles
    2. what other features other than just collecting taxes are provided
    3. What about the illegal constructions?

as an elected representative you should be able to provide us with a all round solution
it is nice to be the first to implement a new model but at what cost , clarity and burden to general public ?

Dear reader writer from Pune, you are correct. To vacate illegal buildings, he need guts, and can't sit in Air condition room, must stand on roads with hot sun shine. As per my knowledge, Mr Ponnuraj was the only officer who cleared Udupi Kalsanka Manipal Road, Karkala Taluk office road..At that time he faced a lot of opposition, but dared to face. Now we enjoy to travel on those roads. He served in Mangalore too, unfortunately he had a very bad experience with before his transfer. This officer too from TN, we can expect a ray of hope.

why every time the account of the vehicle owners are reached. Why not the illegal structures owners in the city's account should hit. Looks ridiculous. for every reason, they have descent public to target.

Why not DC take enough dare and demolish all illegal structures in the city and provide nice parking. Public will be with him. for road, you need toll. for medical safety you want us to buy insurance in our own money. above that we pay tax. nothing in return.

now to come to city you want us to pay. but all the illegal builders and real estate goons can enjoy their life.. may be they are all in Singapore. Unless city becomes clean and pathhole free like Singapore, don't dream all such dream initiatives. First identify all illegal structures and demolish them. demolish all structures which occupied road.... we will definitely get better and widened roads.

Great thought by Deputy Commissioner, DK...! Another pocket cutting plan...! If he is really interested to plan to make Mangalore like Singapore, seriously think about basic things. First , you give your best, then charge.DC must give solutions for the following.1.Road at Bikarnakatta Kaikambha, toward Moodbidri (just below fly over) 2.Nanthoor junction. 3.Bus bay in Highway stops .4.Clean , user friendly toilets in main bus stops like Kadri Mallikatte, Kottara Chowki . 5.Unscientific speed breakers - from Chokkabettu to Katipalla (Krishnapura Road), not even marked . 6. Start AC buses for city service.7.Widen Bundler Road. As I am an outsider, but work in Mangalore, face difficulty in travel in my car, manage with efforts. If DC gives his best by considering all socioeconomic group ,he will be in mind for ever like Bharathlal Meena and Ponnuraj.

Why Road Tax is paid. This is the plan of the DC to make money and pay for the present government to fight celections. Build better roads and foot paths. This is another way of corruption. All should fight against the proposal.

Good suggestion by the Deputy Commissioner. But can we have roads of Singapore standard first!

There are some questions that need to be answered before such a system is implemented: Why buildings don't have parking spaces? Why no action is being taken against those building owners that have built business premises in parking spaces? Why we do not have foot paths? Why there is no storm water drainage system? Why we do not have bus stands and wherever there are, why are they on the roads instead of being offset from the roads?

If these questions are answered and remedial measures taken, then "Singapore Style" system would be meaningful.

In Singapore ERP collected goes for Road maintenance and development and maintain POTHOLE FREE Roads. ERP also works to avoid congestions in CBD area's.
Will this work for Mangalore? ERP collected will go to some Political connected contractor, and road development, pothole free roads will be a distant reality Sir.
Just restrict / stop interstate private busses and implement govt. busses on all the roads in DK.

Who allowed to construct so many high rise residential/commercial buildings just on the side of main roads which are having maximum two lanes on one side. Due to this is there is no space for making slip roads to entry and exit from buildings ,additional lanes to cater vehicles of these building residents . These high rise residential buildings should have been developed as separate colonies outside the city area with new infrastructure ,then connecting these colonies with slip roads for exit and entry to highways .Because of not doing so ,not only traffic congestion we are also facing overflowing of sewage, improper distribution of electricity and water etc. Again because of somebody's mistake common people have to pay the price by paying ERP.

DC favours Electronic Road Price for buses in city, first time in India: Respected sir, It is always easier said than done but implementation is very harsh and tough. Before taken into consideration of current loopholes in the city, you have decided already to favour road price for buses in the city after holding meetings with couple of departments of your choice. Have you ever applied your sensible mind on the current shortcomings currently plaguing in the city. Take the public into confidence before moving ahead of implementation.
Here in our Mangaluru city with the age old infrastructures, improper bus shelters, lack of foot paths, ineffective signal lights, travel unworthy roads, Zebra crossings and unproductive traffic police department, insufficient number of travel worthy lanes on the roads, how one could arrive to such an abrupt conclusion. Even if you implement or favour or go ahead with your plan with the existing infrastructures it will not only be a nuisance and inconvenience to the public but also will be utter failure and disaster.
Before taking any steps just study the pro and cons of the consequences of the implementation. Visit and study not only Singapore but also many other developed countries and see their facilities and infrastructures they provide and then compare our city with them and think about favouring electronic road price for buses in the city. Otherwise it won’t work out. This is my opinion. May be you are having more advanced ideas.
What I would like to suggest is first and foremost address the current burning issues plaguing in the city, increase the number of lanes, build over and under bridges, fly overs, modernize the present infrastructures such as proper footpaths, zebra crossings, quality of the roads, improve the efficiency of signal lights and traffic police department and many traffic related issues before implementation. Then you think about comparing your city, with other developed countries like USA, UK, UAE, Singapore, Newzeland, Switzerland and many more names to the list. Who will pay the money if you implement the law with this kind of existing infrastructures.Sir, don’t do your job just for name sake, publicity and pleasing certain section of the society. There should be a justification in implementation of any acts, rules and law. Let it be democratic and secular. Ultimate loser will be common public. I am always with productive and constructive the norms, rules, laws in the best interest of smooth traffic flow, general public and beautification of our Mangalore city. Also control the in flocking of rich people into the city.Let them move to rural, suburb areas. Unless you address all these facts, I hope this will be a big disaster and havoc.
Wish you all the best for your success of your implementation.
    Jai Bharat,Jai Karnataka,Jai Tulunadu.

The government officers want all go enjoy all allowances by residing in a city. Most of them reluctant to shift to rural area. They get exemptions for their vehicles if such schemes are implemented so only poor people have to bear the burden as seen in toll collection at national highways. Decentralisation of government which was proposed few decades was defeated by such officers. First of all they have to ensure all multistoried buildings have parking space not only for owners but also for visitors. Most of stilt parking in commercial buildings of Mangaluru and surrounding places have been illegally converted to shops. First let them vacate such places. Also in many so called approved layouts the connecting roads are just 10 feet wide which is difficult for fire engine to enter in case of emergency.

First you all provide proper Infrastructure and then think about new Electronic Road Price (ERP) for private vehicles, and stop comparing to Singapore, Singapore is far head compared to India.
Only one think they know in India is how to Extract more money in form of Tax and other expenses.

And no body enter the City simply if they dont have work stop giving bullshit excuses, In India Revolt is not far ,People are fed up and tired

You fail in planning the roads and then punish people with fee?

And no one likes to enter also without reasons .And as per him the fees will be deducted from owners ATM card .What if no ATM card .The ideas are better but before that make proper arrangements of footpaths and remove the shops from footpaths

    Sir,

By enforcing ERP, what is the achievement ? Can you stop vehicles from entering the city ? Will people leave their cars at home fearing ERP ? Won't that again add up to the number people on foot ?

The authorities should instead mark out certain streets for demolition/rebuilding drive because the roads in the city are not as broad as they should be to contain the traffic. This exactly is the issue, not the pedestrians.

Look at the State Bank junction - the shops are so close to the road and the buildings are so old, you can't side with the shop owners and think about a method that is absolutely not feasible. The road itself is a bus-stand - when there is no footpath that pedestrians can walk on, obviously they will get down on the road ?

To bring up a system like Singapore, roads as broad as that place are required. Public transport needs to be cheaper so that people prefer to go by this bus within the city. When the fare is same in private and public, no option is left for people to chose out of the two. More revenue will be generated for the government. Keep the private buses outside - strictly.

First clarify what is the meaning of private vehicles. Already people are amply burdened due to demo, GST and the budget. Don't make even more worst. You are talking of Singapore are we anywhere closer to it in any parameters. Don't loot us with your fantasies.
