Mangalore: Slapping Incident at St Aloysius College - Both Parties Call Truce

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Aug 2: Principal of St Aloysius College Fr Swebert D'Silva clarified to the media that he had not slapped the second year BBM student Amogh alleged, but had only pinched his ear. My nails came into contact with his skin and he got a gash as a result, in the back of his ear, he explained. The student is said to have undergone treatment at the government Wenlock Hospital here as an outpatient.

The principal added that only the under-graduate classes were disrupted after first two classes and post-graduate classes went on smoothly. After the students chose to stay away from the classes after 11 am, holiday was declared for the under-graduate classes, he informed.

Amogh had said that the watchman had snatched away his identity card and produced him in the principal's chamber for riding in a reckless manner in the campus premises. He was driving fast as he was late, he explained.

St Aloysius Institutions Rector Fr Francis Serrao chaired a meeting of student leaders and lecturers in the evening. Fr Serrao later informed that the students were given an assurance from him that such incidents do not recur in future in the college and that he had personally assured them in this regard. The issue is settled following the meeting, he said, adding that the principal too has apologized for the incident.

I was a student of 1957 matriculation when SAC had perhaps the brightest students. We were also mischevious but dare not ask for an apology from the Principal We were punished for our wrong doings. We were brought up with utmost dicipline and most of the boys are now respected and successful. My thanks to the SAC and I support the view that the students who created this conforntation should be expelled from the SAC to maintain discipline otherwise the boys will take a upper hand and create further trouble to SAC and tarnish the good name and reputation of the SAC.

As Amog a student of II BBM in St Aloysious College reached few minutes late to the college in the morning, the watchman took his ID card from him and handed it over to the principal. The principal Fr Swebert D'Silva put false blame that Amog was riding his bike too fast in the college premises and manhandled him. In fact he continuously hit him, forcing him to agree that he was riding his bike very fast along with his friends. Amog was continuously beaten up by the principal because he did not agree to whatever the principal forced him to agree. Actually the principal was trying to put someone else's blame on innocent Amog. He struck him badly and his ears started bleeding and on seeing this the student union decided to go on a strike. The enraged students demanded for an apology from the principal as it was not the first time that such an instance taken place. In fact the principal had not handled many other students also and the strike was taken back because principal apologized that such a complaint wouldn't appear again. So the classes were reopened.

As a parent and alumni of SAC, I feel the student should apologize the Principal, coz our teachers are our Gurus. We are educating ourselves to be a good human beings, learn discipline and to become something when we are out of college. Incase the students want to show their stunts and parents want to encouraging them then they should send their kids to circus not the educational institutes.

I would do the same thing what the Principal did if my son would not follow the rules and regulations of the institute. I really appreciate the Principal for apology, since he proved the words in the Bible. But the boys’ parents should treat this as serious matter, otherwise days are not far where your son will be end up his life with the bad habits or you will have to apologize whenever he won't fulfill his demands.

I’ve high respect being ex-student of SAC (for PGDCA). Like me many have built their life and everyone wants to have their children admitted in SAC (it is more of prestige and high brand value). I thank all who have given time, money effort to build such establishment in Mangalore for years . From the above incident I’ve read SAC is flexible till now and there is immediate need for setting-up strict rules, policies for students to abide.

Management of SAC has to make note for every student to sign and students be responsible for violating any of the rule of SAC. At this time, we should not be passing any judgment who is right or wrong (student or principal). What needs to be questioned is what made principal to become physical? Why student reacted such a way ? Actions of teacher: What teacher (principal) is outcome of series previous verbal instructions given to student

Best teachers always make children to understand but if students fails to adhere to then something wrong which means teacher has no way but to take physical action (meant for animals). Let me give an analogy if a farmer has used beating as a method of giving instructions to the bullocks to do his job it is because they don’t understand human language.

Hence ,if physical action by teacher (for instructions) is not so good to discipline student. This is due student\s behavior in the class (disturbing teacher, not paying attention to class, not completing assignments so on...). Reaction of students: Student reaction is largely depends on parenting, peer group or friends. In this case if student is reacted such a manner which says most of his parenting. I, as a parent would deprive most of the privileges that child enjoys (like mobile, car , watching TV, money, so on…) to discipline him. Hence we need learn a lot from the above incident.

Last two s of tears were unknowingly dropped from my eyes when I read each single comment from the old students of SAC including me who finished my B.Com graduation in 1988. Honorable Fr. Principal you are simply great to apologise with a simple student.

By doing this you became a innocent victim. I was more impressed with a comment here on this issue from Mr. Alwyn, Mangalore. He said in his comment, "Dear Students, you will not know what discipline is when you are in the college, once you are out of the college and look out for employment, you will remember the advise given to you by your own teachers".

Wow!!! Hats off to you Alwyn. As an old student of SAC, my support will never empty to your feet Rev. Fr. Principal. I humbly salute my SAC.

I am glad to hear from Father Francis Serrao, Rector SAC that peace and order is restored at The College and that the students are back in their respective classes. From my point of view it expedient that we bury the hatchets and not nurture ill feelings.

St. Aloysius has a name and reputation and is attended by respectable young men and ladies. My congrats to all concerned in solving the problem. Father Francis I congratulate you specially for your patience and good bearing throughout this difficult period.

I have my strong ties with SAC and hence my anxiety. Let us, YOUNG AND THE OLD try to hold St. Aloysius as an example and together stand by Our Alma Mater. Joe Gonsalves Old Student

The student should have known that college campuses are not a race track. It is good that he hit none otherwise somebody's life would have been in danger. The students should know that in college campuses bikes and mobiles are not required. By chance thay have it they should learn to use it in a responsible manner.

Punishing student is right but raising hands is wrong. There are better ways to make a student to understand the fact rather then hitting him. I dont mean students boycott classes is right at the same time hitting a child is wrong at the fit of the anger nobody will be aware what will happen so disciplinary action is good but not the the extent of hitting anyone.

Being a old student of St Aloysius,  I feel that discipline by the students, be which ever class he is, has to be maintained. Principal has got every right to question each and every student if they are not disciplined.

Dear Students, you will not know what discipline is when you are in the college, once you are out of the college and look out for employment, you will remember the advise given to you by your own teachers. So please abide by that and do not ask an apology from your teachers. The action of the principal is justified.

It's the student who need to apologize if he needs a good future and not the Principal. Discipline is a must in any Institution. Fr.Swebert has done it. Expel the student and Those who instigate will learn the lesson and have discipline in life. Take courage Fr.Principal and go ahead with your dicipline.

Fr. Swebert D'Silva / Fr. Francis Serrao ... What the hell is this??? Why on earth Fr. Principal has to apologize??? Who the hell is this  Amogh??? SAC is above anyone. The Pricipal's office of SAC is at par with the Indian Prime Minister's office. I'm shocked to see Fr. Principal's apology as if there was a murder. Kick everyone out Fr. Principal. Amogh must never be a botheration. Don't even consider his existence. Pls take back your apology. SAC Zindabad!!!

Now that girls are allowed in St. Aloysius, boys have to impress them with their bikes in the campus - speed etc. Vehicles should be parked by students near the gate and a little walking is good for the young boys and girls.

This is totally idiotic. Did anybody not see the mark behind the boys ear? A nail cannot make such a deep and at the same time a long cut. Boycotting is useless and a waste of time. ITS STUPIDITY!!! If he has the guts to ride his bike in the campus at a fast speed, he can go get the cut from anywhere... I don't think the father did it.. He pinched the ear not the back of it. The mark cannot be so big. He is wrong.. What else does anybody need to prove that. The boy isn't going to die. If he was late one day.. its not like the world turned upside down.
