JICA loan for Rs 5,550 crore Cauvery Stage V Water Supply Project

Bengaluru, Jan 24: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will be providing loan assistance to the Rs 5,550 crore Cauvery project Stage V for meeting the drinking water supply needs of Bengaluru city.

The JICA loan agreement was signed among the Japanese Ambassador Kenji Hiramatsu, Chief Representative of JICA Takema Sakamoto and Joint Secretary of the Union Economic Affairs Department S Selva Kumar for funding of the prestigious Cauvery Project Stage V.

JICA will extending loan assistance of 85 % of the project cost of Rs 5550 crore with Karnataka Government and the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) contributing equal amounts of the remaining cost.

Tushar Giri Nath, Chairman BWSSB, Kempramaiah, Engineer in Chief and Dr P N Raveendra Chief Engineer BWSSB were present at the function held in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The Cauvery Project Stage V scheme is to provide bulk potable water supply of 775 MLD from River Cauvery to Bengaluru city at a cost of Rs 4500 crore and also to provide trunk sewerage network and sewage treatment facilities for the entire area of 225 sq. kms. in 110 villages falling under BBMP jurisdiction .

The project will be launched this year with preparatory works like designs and drawings, the construction will start next year.

It is scheduled to be commissioned in 2022 making Bengaluru sufficient in water and mitigating adverse effect on the environment.
