Baby killed as car hits crowd at Rio beach

Brasília, Jan 19 (IANS): A baby was killed and 15 persons were injured after a car ploughed into crowds on a promenade near Rio de Janeiro's famous Copacabana beach in Brazil.

Live television pictures showed victims lying on the sand and pavement after the Thursday incident receiving emergency medical treatment, the BBC reported.

The driver who was detained claimed he had an epileptic fit at the wheel. Drugs to treat the condition were found by the police in the vehicle.

Witnesses said the car went over a bicycle path and across the promenade, hitting people and crashing through the tables and chairs of a cafe, before coming to a halt on the sand.
