Mangaluru: We welcome withdrawal of Haj subsidy, only agents benefited from it - Khader

Mangaluru, Jan 17: Minister for food and civil supplies U T Khader on Wednesday January 17 welcomed the union government's decision to withdraw Haj subsidy and said that in reality, only agents were benefiting from the subsidy and not the poor.

Addressing a press meet here, Khader said, "We welcome the decision of scrapping the Haj subsidy. Poor pilgrims were not getting any benefits from it. Only the agencies which arrange Haj pilgrimage were benefiting. So there is nothing wrong in cancelling the subsidy.

"Haj pilgrimage is the holiest and most important religious ritual for Muslims. Only those who earn and can afford it are required to go on Haj. No one asks for subsidies. In 2012, the Supreme Court had ordered to stop the subsidy step by step within five years. Now automatically it has come to an end. But some people with the intention of catering to a particular section are claiming that it is a bold move. There is nothing bold about it," Khader said.

"Earlier, only Air India took Haj pilgrims who came under government quota, but now after the withdrawal of subsidy, pilgrims can fly by any flight. It will lead to competition in the aviation industry, and because of this, airlines will be compelled to offer discounts on air tickets. At the same time, pilgrims can book tickets six months in advance. It will also help them get tickets at cheaper prices. So there is no loss for Haj pilgrims in the cancellation of subsidy," he added.

To a question on objection from hoteliers to the government's Indira Canteens, he said, "Some hoteliers operating near Indira Canteens are afraid of losing their business, so they are raising objections by pointing out at some technical issues. They clearly know Indira Canteen serves quality food at cheaper rates. It may result in a huge loss for them. That is why they are trying to find faults in this project. But the government will go ahead with the plan."

Congress Bengaluru division in-charge Madhu, ZP vice-president Mohammed Monu, Pius Monteiro and others were present.

One of the requirement for going to Haj is the person should go on his own money. If he has money owing to people, unmarried daughters, in debt then he need not go for the pilgrimage. Hence, one should go only if they can fully afford and so in my humble opinion using any kind of subsidy to go for Haj is forbidden.

Now that the government has banned Haj subsidy they should also ban the subsidy for other pilgrimages too and utilize that money to provide dustbins, toilets and better sanitation in India.

Is it worth to run Air India just for sake of Haj subsidy, helping people at difficult times etc., & employing so many people excess than who are actually required and some who are not fit to be in the job & running into crores & crores of loss & ill treating passengers by overbooking tickets & then not taking care of them by doing so & trying to prove that they are right. Just privatize it as soon as possible; even the one which are making profit. They might be in profit because of not following some procedures because there is less oversight because it's owned by the govt.,

In our national capital, corridors of power, are nowadays echoing, once again with an unending discussion, regarding Haj Subsidy. Few people know what exactly Haj Subsidy is; or what are its pros and cons? But, every Tom, Dick and Harry, without comprehending the whole issue is seen and heard, busy in offering variant opinions. Various TV channels are always there to pick up non-issues, particularly related to Muslims. Even our sober and sincere English Press has joined the debate, again without any fundamental knowledge of the issue or having made any effort to know the background of the problem. In fact, the so-called Haj Subsidy is a non-issue a problem, created out of nothing.
First of all, let’s endeavour to realise, what Haj Subsidy is; in the common sense of the very word, a subsidy is a fiscal aid or at best a compensatory amount to make some fee or price, affordable, for the consumers. In this case, the Government of India subsidises the price of the air ticket for Haj pilgrims, taking a flight to Saudi Arabia, by Air India. A petty amount of Rs. Ten thousand or so, is sanctioned by the government for every pilgrim, flying for Haj. But, in practice, this amount is not directly paid to the travellers, but transferred to Air India. Truly speaking, this monetary assistance is meant at reducing the burden of Air India and not of the pilgrims, which is commonly believed.
One thing to be noted is that Air India is the only option for the Haj pilgrims, to take a flight to Saudi, for performing the annual pilgrimage, through various Haj Committees. It should, once again be stressed that such a monetary help, doled out by the government goes to the coffers of the official air carrier and not to the pockets of the pilgrims, as the popular impression may be.
Today, as a fashion, everybody is opposing the so-called Haj subsidy, in his or her chosen way, and again without knowing or trying to know the basic facts.
Only Bhaktha and Air India are the losers.
    Jai Hind

I dont know what Khader Bhai talking. This scheme was introduced by congress party only & we don't know the purpose behind this scheme, Some DW reader says here that Islam never support subsidy for haj travel. but no one has protested to stop this scheme since it is against Islam. Again Khader Bhai told that this scheme helped the agent. but again question will raise why the congress party keep quiet even after knowing the fact that the benefit is not going to help the right person. They knows that the middle man is encash this scheme still they continued why? why they have not taken any action against agent? what is the link between the agent & congress party? these are the doubts created by Khadar Bhai's press conference. we never questioned this scheme or agents role but these people only creating confusion.

BJP is appeasing Muslims/minority community for votes...going on the footsteps of its predecessors i.e.,Congress party.People think that scraping haz subsidy is good.In fact govt has introduced do many muslim appeasing schemes of which 'Shaadi Shagun' is latest one.
Under shaadi shagun' scheme every muslim from poor class gets RS 51000 cash incentive as gift during marriage. This scheme is meant for only minority community girls depriving Hindu poor girls. But this scheme is operated out of Hindu tax payers money.
Haz subsidy costs govt 750 crores annually.

But shadi shagun' costs much more than haz subsidy. No much publicity for shaadi shagun'.If 2000 marriages of minority poor girls in a years cost RS 1000 crores for govt. This is how govt puts dust the o majority peoples eyes.Hinfus not averse to helping poor minority community girls.Ehyvthey exclude majority poor girls? What is the sin they did ...voting for BJP?why thus ft oubke standard policy?

Mr Prabhu ji .. let us go slowly
You are claiming annual haj subsidy is 750 crores.... from where u got these figures.... As per govt the subsidy figures are
    2013---575 crores
    2014---477 crores
    2015---401 crores
    2016---284 crores
2017---200 crores.... half knowledge is always dangerous

you claim that 51,000 are given to individual under shadi shagun scheme.... you say it costs 1000 crores for 2000 applications..... where did u learn your mathematics .... for your information 51000 x 2000 = 10 crores and NOT 1000 CRORES.. Be fair in your claims.... think of Karma

are you not aware that Karnataka govt is giving 20,000 to each hindu pilgrim undertaking chardham yatra .....DO NOT HIDE THE TRUTH UNDER CARPET ....

    KRPrabhu, Mangalore/Bangalore ,

As per your statement "If 2000 marriages of minority poor girls in a years cost RS 1000 crores for Govt".

Get your numbers RIGHT, or at least use a physical CALCULATOR if you are unable to calculate mentally. Its not Rs 1000 Crores, but a mere Rs 10 Crores.... Even if its 20,000 Marriages.. still the calculated cost will be about Rs 100 Crores.

And now about removing the Hajj Subsidy by the govt, it is one of the good moves. Haj pilgrimage is the holiest and most important religious ritual for Muslims. It is clearly stated that "Only those who can afford it are required to go on Haj."

If you wanna visit any for example National Park or Disney Land, you have to follow certain rule of those Park and land. Similarly if you wanna visit Makkah the house of God, then you need to follow what God has asked to follow. Since it is His house of worship the foremost conditions of Him is to believe in Him and follow Him. That's the only condition God has to enter His place. So anybody of any race, color, status is welcome who follow God's condition.

Henceforth its mandatory on every human to follow rule of the God than human made laws of corruption.
