Cologne shock Monchengladbach, Dortmund held in German Bundesliga

Cologne (Germany), Jan 15 (IANS): Simon Terodde's late winner helped FC Cologne beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 while a wasteful Borussia Dortmund were held 0-0 by Wolfsburg in their Bundesliga matches.

Last placed Cologne earned a crucial win over rivals Monchengladbach on Sunday evening as Terodde's injury-time decider secured their second win of the season, reports Xinhua news agency.

Monchengladbach grabbed the reins right from the kick off and controlled possession while Cologne were forced to focus most of their attention on defending.

However, it were the hosts who opened the scoring against the run of play when Frederik Soerensen tapped home Milos Jojic's long range freekick in the 34th minute.

Monchengladbach restored parity in the second half when Raffael scored off the rebound from inside the Cologne penalty box with 69 minutes on the clock.

Both sides exchanged attacks and could have snatched the win but it was the hosts who scored out of the blue when Terodde headed home Konstantin Rausch's cross in the dying seconds of the game to take all three points for Cologne.

Despite the victory, Cologne remain at the bottom with nine points and an eight-point gap to safety. Monchengladbach remain at the sixth place, within touching distance of international competition.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund shared the spoils with Wolfsburg following a goalless draw at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund had to do it without their prolific striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has been suspended for disciplinary reasons after missing a team meeting on Saturday.

Dortmund controlled proceedings on the pitch for most of the game but Dortmund's poor finishing allowed Wolfsburg to snatch a point.

Dortmund have thus slipped from the third to the fourth place. Wolfsburg remain at the 12th place.
