St Agnes College in the city is a premier Catholic educational institution founded on July 2, 1921 by a great visionary Mother Mary Aloysia, the second superior general of the Apostolic Carmel congregation. She was the first recipient of Kaiser-i-Hind Gold Medal of the First Class in 1929, a prestigious National Award by the then British Government of India for her contribution in the field of women’s education. St Agnes College was the first women’s college on the west coast of India and the second under private management, in the whole country. The college stands tall as a beacon of light in this coastal town and has spread the light of knowledge and wisdom world over through the mission of higher education over the last 98 years.

Among its many laurels, St Agnes College recently received the coveted 'College of Excellence' (CE) certification, from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. It is the first college in Mangalore University, the third in Karnataka and the eighteenth in the country to receive this much-sought-after status. It is the first college in the country to go for reassessment and reaccreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for the fourth time (cycle 4) and was awarded an A+ grade with 3.65/4 CGPA. The college has also recently received the 'Star College Status' from the Department of Biotechnology, ministry of science and technology, Government of India.

As a run up to the great celebrations many networking activities, including a play, a musical concert and a gala fete in the city and similar activities at the various chapters will be held. Besides these, various programmes will be organized for all the stakeholders of the college - the students, faculty, support staff, parents and the alumni.

To mark the centenary of the college, a Centenary Memorial Block will be constructed. To accomplish this dream, the collaboration and cooperation of all the alumni, staff, parents, friends, benefactors and well wishers is sought.

For the past one year the Agnesian alumni have been planning and working together as a team to make the centenary celebration a memorable one. Agnesians are spread far and wide. The first task of the college is to connect all the Agnesians from all over the globe. 10 chapters across the globe where Agnesians meet and connect with each other are established.

The Agnesian alumni has also volunteered to shoulder the responsibility of a project of the Special School — Veronica Vihar — a residential home for the differently-abled children/adults. Many philanthropists will certainly come forward to support this noble mission.

Sr Venissa, vice principal, Meera Aranha, convener centenary committee, Devi Prabha Alva, HOD dept of commerce, Sanchia Nazareth vice president alumni association and Mrunali student president were present during the press meet.
