Modi lied about Muslim women going on Haj alone: Congress

New Delhi, Jan 2 (IANS): The Congress on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lying that the government has removed the restriction and will now allow Muslim women to travel to Haj without a male attendant.

"PM caught lying once again! Lie: Mann Ki Baat - 31 Dec - Muslim Women can now perform Haj without a male member.

"Truth: Saudi Arabia in 2015 - Women below 45 years can't do Haj without male companion. Women above 45 can do Haj in group of four," Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted.

Modi announced on Sunday that the government had changed the law by permitting Muslim women to travel for the annual Haj pilgrimage without any male attendant.

Soon after getting a controversial legislation, which has made instant triple divorce a criminal offense, passed by the Lok Sabha, the Narendra Modi-led government in the Centre in an apparent bid to woo his party’s new-found ally of the Muslim women – is publicising that it has facilitated women over 45 years to travel in groups of four for Haj without ‘mahram’ (a male guardian such as a father, husband, brother or son).
But the reality is that the credit for amendment in Haj regulations goes to Saudi Arabia, not India. “Any woman over the age of 45 may travel without a Mahram with an organized group, provided she submits a letter of no objection from her Mahram authorizing her to travel for Hajj with the named group. This letter should be notarized,” said Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s guidelines for the Islamic pilgrimage.
Islam does not prohibit women from visiting the holy cities of Mecca and Madinah to perform hajj without a mahram. There are some 25 verses in holy Quran that spell out the rules of what is lawful during the pilgrimage. However, not one of them mentions that a woman needs to have a ‘mahram’ with her.
“Since this is the rule framed by the Saudi government that women are required to travel for Hajj with a mahram, one has to obey the law of the land. According to hadith (record of the words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad), the Prophet ordained this for reasons of safety since travel was risky and one needed protection from attacks of robbers and thieves. Travel through waterless deserts was also tough,”
Hardly can one question the PM’s concern about a section of women in the country. But one will certainly be wondering why he is not giving such attention to the widows that constitute a far bigger portion of the women population than those facing Triple Talaq or going on Haj.

even if the saudi haj authority relaxed the rule in 2015, the indians still couldnt go under the relaxation.
It took a Modi to relax the rule from the indian side.
where was the congress, self proclaimed seculars, defenders of Muslims ?why didnt they demand the relaxation in 2015 itself? That is the question.

What a shame that PM of our country lies for everything? From lies about selling tea at a railway station which was not there at all, to getting his graduation done during Emergency to stating that he's bachelor when in actual he was married, he's adept in lies. What India has to do with Mehram? It's the restriction imposed by Saudi and it has to be vacated by Saudi and Modi can't do anything about it. It's applicable for all Muslim women and not just to Indian Muslim women. And yet he has the audacity to lie that too in National Radio broadcast. What new lows he can steep to?

    Dear Hemanth,

What according to you is empowerment of women and independence to women?

As per the statistical data for divorced women from 2011 census, 68% of them are Hindu women and 23% belong to Muslim community. And obviously the numbers have jumped up in 7 years, leaving behind more divorced Hindu women. Apart from these, around 83% of women who were deserted are Hindus (one among them is Jashodaben, I need not mention who she is!).

Let me ask you a simple question, in Ashrams/Old age home, inmates of which community according to you are in majority?

So speaking about empowerment, you need not worry about it since in Islam there are various rules and process to empower our women which you guys least know of. So now, when are you going to empower the abandoned and deserted Hindu women?

Dear Bro...no one has any problem with anything but most of us instead of fixing our own, will poke our nose in to others. There are dozens of issues need to be addressed like terrorism, sucurity, unemployment, GDP, bloody neighbour country etc etc..but instead on daily basis we are only interested in cow, beef, TTL, Hajj, Muslims population, conversion blah blah blah. First of all as a resident of Saudi for the last 20 years, as per my knowledge, It's a Saudi Govt requirement that "a female below 45 years of age cannot perform Hajj without a male guardian (either husband or any close blood relatives) and over 45 years age, they can perform in group. Anyway, a single female won't get visa without a hajj group (which act as sponsor) even it's applies for here in domestic as well (to be honest no idea whether this restriction relaxed or not). So the restriction is from hosting country (Saudi) and not from any person or any other country. (pls correct me if I am wrong). First of all let's our dear PM fix his own house (which he abandon his own wife), then he can fix others house. As PM, he should be model for fellow Indians but by action not by acting. God Bless My (our) India.
