Udupi: Renovated building of St Mary's Cathedral, Brahmavar set for inauguration in Jan

Udupi, Dec 25: The 129-year-old St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar is set to consecrate and inaugurate its renovated church building on January 11 and 12, 2018, said Fr C A Isaac, vicar general of Udupi diocese here on Saturday, December 23.

The consecration will be led by the Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, the supreme head of the Indian (Malankara) Orthodox Syrian Church, who will also deliver the inaugural address. Yakob Mar Elias, Metropolitan, diocese of Brahmavar will preside over the programme.

Home minister Ramalinga Reddy, Bengaluru development and town planning minister K J George and youth affairs and sports, fisheries and Udupi district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj will be the chief guests of the event.

Programme Details

The consecration programme will begin officially with flag hosting at 10.30 am after the Mass on Sunday, January 7, 2018. From January 8 to 10, Mass will be held at 8 am and special evening prayers at 6 pm.

On Thursday, January 11, the main festivities will begin by ‘Hore Kanike’ procession from Akashvani Circle to the Cathedral at 3 pm which will be flagged off by H.G. Yakob Mar Elias (Bishop, Brahmavar Diocese). At 5.30 pm consecration prayers will begin, followed by supper at 08.30 pm.

On Friday, January 12, the second part of the consecration prayers will begin by 6.30 am, followed by Mass at 8.30 am. A public meet will be held after the mass. Dignitaries will address the gathering.

The public meet will be presided over by Yakob Mar Elias. The Meet shall be inaugurated by the Catholicos His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Paulose II.


A Brief Note on St Mary's Cathedral

St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar, is the only Konkani Orthodox Church in the entire world and has a rich legacy of 125 years. It is a part of the 2000-year-old Indian Church, namely the Indian (Malankara) Orthodox Church, which was found by St Thomas the Apostle in 52 AD in India.

Blessed Alvares Mar Julius and Blessed Fr R Z Noronha had established the Cathedral.

The Cathedral has 6 chapels in Kolalgiri, Kurady, Sastan, Kandlur, Hosangady and Hulikel, Shimoga; and five congregations in Mumbai, Bangalore, Mandya, Kuwait and UAE.
