Dharwad: Dentist removes three teeth at one go, costs man his life

Dharwad, Dec 18: A person lost his life after the dentist he approached for pain in one of his teeth removed three teeth at a time. The deceased was Abdul Khader Bagalkot, resident of Ganeshpet here.

Abdul Khader had reportedly approached Dr Veeresh Magalada of Ratna Dental Clinic for treatment on December 8. Dr Veeresh extracted three of Abdul's teeth after which profuse bleeding was experienced. As the problem persisted, Abdul approached the dentist, who advised him to get treated elsewhere.

Khader was admitted into Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital on December 9. As his condition was serious, he was put in the intensive care unit. As bleeding was heavy, Khader's condition did not improve even after providing six bottles of blood. Abdul's relative, Imran, said that Abdul breathed his last on Saturday midnight.

In a complaint filed against the dentist in the city police station here, family of Abdul said that excessive bleeding had occurred as the dentist removed three teeth instead of one.

Abdul's relatives said that after getting Abdul admitted into hospital, they had called Dr Veeresh, seeking financial help for treatment. Dr Veeresh came to the hospital, gave Rs 10,000 towards blood test and other expenses, and got a letter sighed by Abdul, that the patient would not demand for more money, Khader's relatives alleged.

    I wanted to take dental treatment in India. I found a good dental clinic in Mangalore and most of dentist in this clinic were well qualified. When I was satisfied with their qualification I went to see the doctor. Well qualified doctor came and checked my teeth and called a student doctor and asked him to do the needful. I was waiting any qualified doctor to check my teeth but when student completed his work they charged me good amount. Most of clinics and hospitals will put good doctors names and their qualification but they are only name sake but they will not attend any patient. This is one way to fool the people.

    This is going on even in Canada's capital, Ottawa. The name of the dentist is given on the board and on bills, but the dentist hardly attends to routine work such as cleaning, polishing, etc, which is done by dental hygienists. No doubt the latter are qualified to do the work, but the dentist bills the full amount as if he/she had done the work personally. They have more important tasks to attend, and fool the patients. Only if there are any complications the dentist is called.

    Don't depend on good certificate from a patient or general public about a good doctor.Only a doctor can give good certificate about a good doctor.

    In recent days 2 cases of gross negligence of docs n heavy overcharging were reported from 2 reputed hospitals in the north thus tarnishing the image of the profession! If one reads the news reports in detail, what these hospitals have resorted to is nothing short of extortion of poor gullible patients!! God save such type of docs n hospitals!!!

    The dentist may be a quack to remove 3 teeth when patient complained of pain in one tooth, or the patient could have been suffering from a bleeding disorder that his bleeding just could not be controlled even after extensive efforts!!

    The patients should inform to Dentist about all the medication they take. Doctors should update thmenselves. Little knowledge is dangerous..
    Drugs like aspirin, warfarin( blood thinners and anti coagluants )may result in excessive bleeding.
    I know a person who had his four thooth were extracted and all is fine.

    Neil, I agree with you. Having 3 tooth extraction, no healthy person would die of haemorrage unless the pt is on blood thinning medications (Aspirin, Revaroxaban, Warfarin etc) or has underlying undiagnosed bleeding disorder which the doctor and pt didnt know about. My sympathy to patient's family . I still couldn't comprehend when pt got admitted to a tertiary centre and still lost his life. Perhaps it was too late or no enough blood products or clotting factors (FFP/cryoprecipitate was not available ) or or pt had underlying major haematological disorder. I don't wish to speculate. RIP

    Even if patient was on any of such medications so much of uncontrolled bleeding even with treatment in a tertiary care hospital is very unusual!!

    @Roshan Abudhabi,mangalore,even when you remove this doctors all teeth without medication too died patient will not come back,and instead he should be charre d to court with help of lawayer.He cant take a signature from a sick patient and it is not valid.He should pay to patients family high compansation.He must have thought with Rs,10,000,everything is settled what he did.Check his certifiacte.He shouldnt practice in future.Danger to life of patients.who knows patient had high blood pressure?Or had taken medicine some aspirin for pain before coming to his practice?Everything is possible.People often take aspirin or pain killer in villages wihtout thinking.It is so easy to get medicine in India without prescription(New)Very sad .may his soul rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to his family.
