Development has won, says Modi on assembly election results

Updated

New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI) : Election results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh indicate a strong support for politics of good governance and development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today as trends showed that the BJP was inching towards victory in the two states.

"I bow to the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for their affection and trust in BJP. I assure them that we will leave no stone unturned in furthering the development journey of these states and serve the people tirelessly," he said in a series of tweets.

He also said the results proved that there is a strong support for "politics of good governance and development".

"I salute the hardworking BJP karyakartas (workers) in these states for their hard work which has led to these impressive victories," he said.

In another tweet in Hindi, Modi said development won and so did Gujarat.

The BJP today headed for a record sixth straight victory in Gujarat assembly polls, and was set to evict the Congress in Himachal Pradesh, tightening the party's grip over the country's politics with general elections only 18 months away. PTI NABi RT

BJP juggernaut rolls on in Gujarat, tramples Congress in Himachal

Ahmedabad/Shimla, Dec 18 (PTI): The BJP today headed for a record sixth straight victory in Gujarat assembly polls and was set to evict the Congress in Himachal Pradesh, widening the party's grip over the country's politics with general elections only 18 months away.

The BJP called the results a vote for development pushed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the tireless star campaigner in both states. The Congress took solace in the fact that it bettered its tally in Gujarat, the home turf of Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.

Still, when the final results are in later today, it will be clear that another Congress-ruled state has slipped from its grasp into BJP control. It now rules only Karnataka and Punjab among the major states.

"This is a vote for development and trust for Narendra Modi," Union minister Jitendra Singh told reporters.

"We have set a record in the history of the BJP by winning consecutive assembly polls... Anti-incumbency is not working there. The prime minister's popularity is intact. Amit Shah's strategy has worked," BJP vice president Shyam Jaju said.

As the victories became clear, party workers gathered in the streets and headquarters, distributing sweets and bursting firecrackers.

According to Election Commission results and trends for all the 182 seats in Gujarat, the BJP won eight and was ahead in 94. It needs 93 to form a majority government. The Congress won five and was leading in 69.

Congress had won 61 seats in the 2012 elections while the BJP had got 115.

The BJP's dip this time was touted by the Congress as a reflection of Congress President Rahul Gandhi's efforts during the campaign when he appeared to have improved his stature as a politician.

"The Congress' tally has gone up there, while the BJP's numbers have fallen. This is the start of Rahul Gandhi's political story," senior Congress leader Kamal Nath told reporters outside Parliament.

His colleague, Renuka Chowdary, added: "Congress has done brilliantly. Our strength has increased. Morally, it has been a brilliant intervention of Rahul Gandhi."

In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP won two seats and was ahead in 41 seats while the ruling Congress won one and was ahead in 20 in the 68-member house. A majority will come with 35 seats. In the outgoing house, Congress had 36 seats, and BJP 26.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was earlier trailing after the count of postal ballots, has a strong lead over Congress' Indranil Rajyaguru in Rajkot West seat.

However, Prem Kumar Dhumal, BJP's chief ministerial candidate in Himachal Pradesh, was trailing behind Congress's Rajinder Rana in Sujanpur, after he changed his traditional constituency of Hamirpur. He was made the CM face only nine days before the polling.

At this stage, the BJP had a vote share of 49.1 percent while it was 41.5 percent for the Congress in Gujarat. Its vote share in 2012 was 38.93 percent. The BJP's margin of victory in a dozen constituencies was said to be 2000 to 3000.

The Dec. 9 and 14 elections took place in the backdrop of GST and demonetisation, which the opposition had claimed would inflict a huge dent in Modi's popularity.

Modi and Shah campaigned vigorously, crisscrossing the state to hold scores of rallies in what appeared to be a trailer for the next Lok Sabha elections, which should be held before May 2019.

The victories establish not only the BJP's supremacy but also Modi's apparent invincibility. Yet, it also made Gandhi, who recently assumed Congress presidentship, a serious challenger as he appeared more confident in taking on the BJP stalwarts.

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel is ahead in Mehsana against Congress candidate Jivabhai Patel by 3,000 votes. Mehsana was the epicentre of the Patidar reservation agitation.

The BJP has won every election since 1995. However, it was out of power for a couple of years due to party infighting and rebellion by Shankersinh Vaghela. BJP came back to power in 1998 and has ruled uninterrupted since then.

In Himachal Pradesh, Congress veteran and six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and his son Vikramaditya Singh are leading from Arki and Shimla(Rural) respectively.

Congress badly requires change of leadership, i still feel if Pranab sir was a prime minister candidate, BJP and congress would have neck to neck fight during 2014 election, winning & losing would be a different question.Unfortunately that didn't happen as he was president by then.

I m sure 2019 it will be clean sweep once again by BJP , if congress do not have strong Prime ministerial candidate .

In BJP 's perspective they are already ahead 10 years on political front, they have Yogi jee and Manohar Parikar & Sushma jee, if in case Modi Sir makes a decision of moving away from politics
8- 10 years from now, they already have a strong back up.

The only deserving candidate for PM's chair in BJP is Sushma Swaraj! All other leaders in BJP are useless.
If we look at in General, and in terms of performance i see the best suited candidate for PM's post is ARVIND KEJRIWAL. in spite of all the conspiracy by Modi team to malgin him, he is doing the best job.

Aap is not strong to get majority on its own, hence AAP need to merge with Congress. Rahul Gandhi will remain only as Party president, AK should take over as PM, Shashi Taroon to be given an important portfolio such as Defence or External affairs. All Congress leaders above 60 to be put in margdarshan committee.

Fuel Price, Gas Price loot for corporate friends benefit at the cost of citizens.
Scam of the century- Demonetization & who benefited from it.
    Money laundered through Jan Dhan.
    15 lakh ki joot.
    FDI & Aadhar U turns.
    Devide & rule policy.
Manadatory digital banking for benefit of banks (bank charges) & government (GST on bank charges)
Using tax payer money to bail out banks due to corporate NPA's.
Now even trying to swallow public bank deposits by trying to pass new bill with "bail in" option.
    Vyapam scam & deaths.
    Defence scams.
    Horse trading for political gain.
    Culling RTI & NGO's.
Snubbing media with political & money power.
Misusing government machinery like IT, CAG etc only against opposition.
Dubbing any ctiticism as anti national.

"The Congress' tally has gone up there, while the BJP's numbers have fallen
"Congress has done brilliantly, by achieving 19 seats more than what they got in 2014 elections. Congress lost but extra seats is a clear sign of people losing trust in BJP and the popularity is striding towards Congress. Such support is enough to boost the morale of Rahul’s future efforts.
Without Modi’s campaigning (unparalleled, mostly fake claims) BJP would have lost the elections. In other words, if Rahul had the oratory skill of Modiji, the final tally would have gone in Congress favour.

for those who have written pro Congress... boss, lost is lost and won is won. It may be with 1 vote. as you were scribbing on BJP's target which was 150, your target was election win in Gujarat. Did that happen. That remained as a dream only. since Amit shah set that huge target, with all your ( congress )efforts to defeat BJP, irrespective of caste name, religion name, reservation, acting hindu, wearing rudrakshis... etc etc... still BJP could withstand the election and retained Gujarat with them. So, don't be shameful still arguing on margin, rural, urban ... etc etc... you are not realizing it's only few states with Congress... If they accept the defeat and work towards next elections , they can retain those , at least. OR , if they still keep debating on Gujarat's number , what shah said, what modi said.. etc etc... you will miss the bus... you will keep seeing and BJP will end up with congress Mukth Bharath very soon, with out much effort.

However setbacks in rural areas, particularly in Saurashtra should not be taken lightly by BJP if they want a better performance in 2019.

Now, only Karnataka and Punjab is left with Congress. Election fund for the party to cover whole country needs to be diverted from the money belonging to common man of these two states. Karnataka CM is issuing full page advertisement in national dailies on a day to day basis to boost his image. He is well aware that this image boosting process should be over before announcement of election as code of conduct will be in force. But he do not know corrupt image of congress government is already engraved in the minds of people and a few newspaper advertisements and hollow claims cannot reverse the process. Karnataka also will be lost by the end of March and reckless governance laced with corruption will make it happen.

The reason for the defeat probably is Rahul Wanted to do everything himself whereas BJP used fully Mighty Force as a team work. Rahul did not untilise full Services of impressive youth Central Leaders like schindia,Ajay,Pilot,Poonawala,Tharoor , Tiwari Etc (All of them were impressive Speakers). Unfortunaly He wanted to potray himself everywhere and failed. All tools/support were given to him but he did not use them at all properly. He could Have used Mamata,Kejrival,Lallu Etc as compainers which could have earned lot of Votes. He could have won another 10 Seats by Using these Additional Forces apart from what he had support from Patels . If he cannot win here where will he win then? Full country Wanted a change through Guijarath but Rahul has disappointed all Of his supporters with his immatured and childish. Modi and Team has really spent all forces including spending wealth like Water. Rahul Has lost a golden opportunity which he maynot get in very near Future . ..Rahul or Congress trying to get some sympathy by these losses & their cheer leader analyst ridiculously arguing that 'Capable winner is looser, while lost looser is winner'..Congress winning capacity was just 50 this time, rest 30 from Patidar andholan..Patidar andolan funded by Congress..they are divided on caste line now just for Congress vote bank..and they talk about peace, love blah blah..No political analyst can give details of short comings of Gujrat govt, whether its administartion, security, road, electricity, job..GST/Demonetisation didnt had any impact...if there is no Patidar andolan & young trios, congress couldnt managed to win 50..sad part is analyst/media knows quota is harmful but not ready to oppose leaders who propogate it..

Please look at the number of seats won by Congress, in a state ruled by BJP. Its a great success by Rahul Gandhi and his team. He never spoke wrongly about the BJP but pointed out the fact in a good manner. There was no hatred in his speech. He was humble and spoke for the people of the state. This is just a beginning and Congress will do much better and soon rule the country.

I request you all, please do not make fun of any party. We don't need to do such things. But our opinion required to be the actual fact.

Let us do our best as individual to have a government which treats the people equally without hatred, differences and allow every Indian to follow his or her religion without anyone's interference.

No word about "Development" and "Vikas" during election campaign nor any chest thumping boasting about any accomplishments and achievements other than indulging in cheap street behaviour and mudslinging on opposition. How come immediately after winning the elections the word "Development" has been used as front banner. Is it appropriate for the PM of the country to give false impression about its service to the people and country?????!!!!... I think it doesn't matter to this PM who was time and again violating election code of conduct during his campaigning.

This is best time for congress get into power in Gujarat , but failed again ,There are lots of tools could have been used like Patidar.....Patel Community...Note ban, dalit issue many more . but they did not used properly.

Old aged leaders statements also reason.

Here BJP got less seat not because of Congress performance , its only Patel & dalit movements.

despite Anti Incumbency ..Tough GST,demonetisation decisions which seems to have affected traders from Gujarat badly ..I think even to win in a thin margin is remarkable achievement by BJP . While its a lesson for BJP to not be overconfident and take voters for granted but for the Congress it is a death knell..unless it reinvents itself and comes out of its minority appeasement politics.

All said and done look at the figure which speaks about BJP's fall down. Being one of the strongest BJP ruling states over 2 decades, in this election they lost their seats drastically whereas Congress won more than their previous elections. This is not a good sign for BJP for their next 2019 election. Most of the BJP Planes and strategies did not work the way they predicted. BJP has done maximum marketing for their minimum works. Now Indian public also realized the reality and this will not work for long run. This is the reason Congress taking advantage of BJP's failure. So we need to wait and see and only time will tell you if it is Congress mukt Bharath or BJP mukt Bharath.

Note: To fight Modiji, Congress need to change either its leadership or present leader must concentrate on National problem and solution than blaming and attacking Modiji.. Now, only last 4 seats in Congress hand..They have to work from the root..otherwise Congress Mukth Bharat is inevitable..Soul of Indiraji is very sad..

I feel sorry for Cong, But this is inevitable, I think Cong is missing a dynamic leader. They have a man who defeat after defeat just smiles while someone else is fired, protected by his high caste family leadership, a man with no merit, qualifications, attitude or desire, is promoted leader with no democracy, debate or authenticity, with no criticism allowed, a man who has lived a rich pampered existence of which 99% of common man has no links to, yet only talks about how bad poverty is during election time, a man who only goes temples during election time, a man who goes on foreign holidays while his party is in doldrums. A party where your work and talent is ignored instead the son of the boss is automatic leader and your not allowed to question it. Why doesnt Cong try another leader, like Sahshi Taroor . The writing is clear on the wall, that RG lacks conviction. Retaining HP would atleast have gained some confidence.

Despite losing again, sickularist's here showcase as if they have won. Agreed BJP lost around 10 seats from 2012, this is because in 2012 Gujarat had Modiji has CM and now there is no equivalent charismatic person who can fit into Modiji's place. This may be the reason and also due to Patidar (Hardhik Patel's party). Again Congress was soon to grab Patel's (which is its divide and rule policy). Amidst all these Congress was not able to win. Winning by 100 margin or 10 margin..., at the end all that matters is having WON or not. Common sickularist's..., get on into Burnol Mode again.

Comparing to 2012 election, Congress got excess 15 seats & BJP lost 10 seats. Comparing to 2014 election Congress got excess 60 seats & BJP lost 60 seats.

If Congress won this time, they will get overconfidence & going to sleeping mode, result, they will loose 2019 election. Now Gujarat election result is wake up call for Congress. If they are serious to winning 2019 election, they should start strategy from now itself. Ball is on Congress ground.

This filthy Hardik Patel who was made out to be a hero by Cong was and is an absolute ZERO and that is what the results have proved.

Rahul and Co did not mention anything..Even in Mount Carmel College he attacked Modiji in front of students, instead of taking about education, planning.. He is Congress Chief ! I was confident of congi not crossing 50, but I admit it was my overconfidence.

    my observations

Cong did quite well.. without break up of patel and dalit votes, congs wold not have croosed 50

BJP only managed to win.. it was modi home turf.. loosing many seats to congis is a worry for 2019

janue shivbakt papu can take out the jeneu now as in Karnataka scull cap will work..LOL

bjp can stop being overconfident and accept that not to take gujjus for granted.. learn now or else face disaster in 2019. your cm candidates are all useless

cong can feel better that with pappu campaigning it is slowly improving its tally.. if pappu continue sto work hard like in guj

I will now watch Hardik patel very closely to see what does he do after the results as he was planted to create divide.

Anti-incumbency is likely to make a dent in the number of seats. We need to sympathize with the dilemma of the Gujarat voters. On one side they are voting to keep the same party that has been in power for 22 years for "more of the same" type of another 5 year mandate. However, on the other hand, they are aware that this vote will be conceived as vote against Gujarati PM successfully ruled their state as CM.

Whichever party comes to power must work towards the solutions for this State realizing fully that the mandate was due to this dilemma and not that Gujaratis are content with Status Quo.

Regarding Congress less spoken the better. Unless Congress takes up revolutionary ideas (for start, grass root corruption, overhaul of civil service, ideas for skilled workforce for 2050, garner trust within all communities and a whole together new philosophy in addition to development and growth agenda of BJP), it's future is only Karnataka and Punjab; the dumb-nuts of a sovereign country called India.

Its a warning for BJP for K'taka 2018. Keep away corrupt leaders. We prefer defeat than electing these corrupt K'taka BJP leaders only for the sake of supporting Modi. Now CONgress K'taka leadrers can not point fingers at EVMs. Bharath Mata Ki Jai. Jai Karnataka Mathe. Jai Hind.

This may be a lesson for BJP..but actual winner is Congress and it newly income inducted President Rahul Gandhi.BJp and Modi should see the writting on the wall and learn what the people want.Whether BJP rule has really touched common man.?Henceforth stop mocking Rahul otherwise you will get humiliated further in coming elections especially in Karnataka where election us due in next few months.People have rejected Modi policies......Congressis real winner even though a looser but BJP us looser ever though a winner.
Stop Congress bashing and for all your failures....If Modi can't manage just quit gracefully.

Very very good performance by INC. I am very happy to see INC in Gujarath. People know how to deal with arrogance. Arrogance made INC lose in 2014, its arrogance that will now show BJP its place.
