Bengaluru: Siddu fears EVMs could be tampered with, demands ballot papers

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Dec 15: Though Karnataka’s assembly polls are five months away, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has joined the chorus against Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and expressed apprehensions that they could be tampered with to negate the mandate of the people.

The Chief Minister has publicly demanded that ballot papers must be used in the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the State.

"We will meet and write to the Election Commission on this," he said and declared: "We demand that elections in Karnataka be conducted using ballot papers."

Siddaramaiah in Raichur

Apprehensions about possible tampering of EVMs through Bluetooth technology was raised by the opposition Congress during the Assembly elections in Gujarat, which the Election Commission had termed "baseless."

The Congress and other political parties, especially Aam Admi Party (AAP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have doubted about the credibility of EVMs during recently concluded civic polls in Uttar Pradesh and assembly elections earlier this year.

Speaking to reporters in Raichur, the Chief Minister said, "What we are saying is go back to the old (ballot paper) system. What is the difficulty? Let the Election Commission, which is a constitutional body, conduct the elections in a free and fair manner."

The Chief Minister said he had discussed the issue of EVMs with some experts and they said there were chances that the EVMs could be tampered with.

He said several countries have gone back from EVMs to ballot papers and there is no harm in going back to the ballot paper system.

The Chief Minister demanded that ballot papers must be used during the next year’s assembly polls in the State. "All that we want is that people’s mandate should be respected and not interfered with," he said.

Siddaramaiah ruled out any impact of Gujarat poll results on Karnataka and said the issues in the State were totally different.

"Results of any state will not have any impact on the results of another state....issues there are different from our state. So there is no relation to one another. So it cannot be said," he said.

Asked about the exit polls predicting a win for the BJP in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, Siddaramaiah said the counting is yet to happen, adding, "this are just exit polls."

"There are various instances where exit polls have gone wrong. Let's see what happens on December 18," he said.

Alleging that the Election Commission was under the control of the BJP government, he said NDA government had appointed the Chief Election Commissioner.

Transport Minister H M Revanna, has in his twitter post, too said that it was better to hold elections in Karnataka using ballot papers.

Fearing about use of EVM's is natural for our CM and his party. Since last 60years, we have seen how ballots were misused by criminal gangs of these political parties in India.. They used to drive away the officers who conduct electroral process in rural areas and grab the ballots and put vote forcefully for respective parties and win the election. Even duplicate ballots were printed in those days and replaced by some criminal gangs.... now the situation is totally changed.... You have a proper ID.. Security personnel,,,, good officers and of course disciplined voters.... so EVM has revolutionised the process of election today.... If anybody has doubts of rigging let them knock the doors of court and law....

    A must read...,

Without questioning the authority & wisdom of the Apex court.., primarily as a layman..., what is the object & use of VVPAT....?????, time for EC to voluntarily prove its credibility about its unbiased integrity & independence..,

After looking at the verdict of Supreme Court..., In my opinion prima facie, to prove its independence the EC must allow the candidates & the parties to examine the EVM audit log/trail.

Based on input from my buddy who is an IT expert (from Southern Hindustani state of TN), the chip inside the EVM can be pre-programmed to capture the votes with a particular bias by coding few algo logic & enabling the timer it is possible to impair the outcome...., in other words, if you check the machine's integrity within a one or two hours of vote cast you won't find any error but the timer may change the votes after say 24 hours or at a particular pre-defined set time.

I welcome the experts comments/response/counter in this regard...,

Anything living or non-living (modern world) thing can be taught to learn as you wish. Any equipment functioning under the influence of software algorithms can be tampered to function the way you want. Even though congress introduced EVMs there was no tampering at that time but BJP made the best use of it and exploited all its capabilities now. But it is not still late, mistake made and learnt the hard way can be reversed for the sake of the country and its people.

Times of India mega online pole which is was conducted over 72 hours between December 12 to 15, in 9 languages, results are out. If elections were held today, Modi will win with overwhelming majority, finds the survey. Do you also think that survey is programmed so that it will give result, in favour of BJP. Brother, time has changed now. People are smart enough to understand who is working honestly for the betterment of India. I am not telling that all BJP politicians are non corrupt, but as far as Modi is concerned, he is non corrupt and tirelessly working for India. So Modi is favourite choice for the position of PM.

Has he forgotten that he won with the same EVM in 2013 assembly elections where Congress got 122 seats , also by-elections both seats were won by Congress using same EVM, then he had said publicly that EVM's are working fine. Then why this nervousness now? Surely the ground is shifting against the Congress in Karnataka and he is finding a lame excuse for his imminent defeat. Karnataka has a long trend of voting the incumbent government out since 1989. No party has got second term.

Computers could be used tamper records. So we should go to age old paper based system for ration cards, land records etc etc. That is Siddu' logic. He assumed people of the state are stupid people and hopes that he will able to create doubts in the minds of the people. He thinks that people have bought his story on Hublot watch which he shamelessly had to deposit with govt treasury. He can go to court, but he won't, because he knows they won't entertain him. He will do this media circus and hope that somebody will listen. Sad state of affairs in the congress party.

Just two days back the investigative journalists of Janata-ka-reporter.com have exposed the nexus between the Micro-chip manufacturers of the EVMs and the Gujarat Gas Company and who was given 20,000 crores when Modi was CM of Gujarat . These 20,000 crores have gone down the drain and now ONGC has been asked to takeover this liability of Gujarat Gas, which clearly proves that the Chip manufacturers of EVM were bought over by BJP prior to 2014 itself.

    3. By evening 5 o' clock count the vote at booth level, display both results - manual counting and evm recorded numbers..
