Modi hopes for fruitful Winter Session

New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed hope that the Winter Session of Parliament would be productive, with "positive" debates.

"There should be a good debate, there should be a positive debate, and the debates should take place with innovative suggestions… only then the time of the Parliament will be properly utilized for the benefit of the country," Modi told the media ahead of the session.

The session, which would continue till January 5, 2018, would discuss many important issues which would have far-reaching impact on the nation, he said.

"I am confident of it, and even yesterday we had an all-party meeting in which there was a common voice that the session of the Parliament should be utilised in a proper manner for taking the country forward."

"And I also hope that if the House will function in a positive manner then the country will be benefited, democracy will be strengthened and a new trust for fulfilling the expectations and hopes of common people will be created," the Prime Minister said.

He said usually the season of winter starts with Diwali but due to the impact of global warming and climate change, one does not feel the intense cold these days.

"However, our Winter Session is getting started. And I believe that in this Winter Session, that is beginning in 2017 and will continue in 2018, several important issues of the government, that have far reaching impact, will be brought before the Parliament," Modi said.

The session began on Friday and after obituary references the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day till Monday.

The Rajya Sabha, however, saw repeated adjournments in the pre-lunch sitting on the issue of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Sharad Yadav's disqualification and the allegations of conniving with Pakistan levelled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi against his predecessor Manmohan Singh.

The Upper House was adjourned till 2.30 p.m. soon after it met for the Question Hour after a short adjournment.
