Telecast condom ads only between 10 pm and 6 am, govt tells channels

New Delhi, Dec 12 (DHNS): The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry on Monday asked all television channels to telecast advertisements of condoms only between 10 pm and 6 am so as to avoid "exposure of such material" to children.

It also threatened to take action against channels not complying with its directive.

The order comes after the ministry received several complaints that some channels "repeatedly" showed condom advertisements which were "indecent" for children.

"All TV channels are hereby advised not to telecast advertisements of condoms which are for a particular age group and could be indecent or inappropriate for viewing by children," the ministry said in its advisory.

The ministry referred to Clause 7 (7) of the cable Television Networks Rules, 1994, to justify its directive, saying it stipulates: "No advertisement which endangers the safety of children or creates in them any interest in unhealthy practices or shows them begging or in an undignified or indecent manner shall be carried in the cable service."

"Any failure will attract action as per provisions of the rules," the ministry said.

doesn't make any sense in current day... everything is visible everywhere... no blockers, no censor board . nothing... anything can come in TV and media... movies also... everything is shown... so just blocking this from 7 AM to 10 PM doesn't make any difference. Either stop this... Stop Cigarette adds, stop liquor adds.

Today, Times of India reported 1.6 crore abortions take place per year in India. 4.81 crore pregnancies per year, out which 50% are unintended or not planned. With such a magnitude, whether the govt's directive is right or wrong, one cannot guess.

Can I&B draw an imaginary curtain when domestic fowl, canine or other species mate ? Childrinen observe the nature right from the time they come to the age of understanding what happening in the nature. True, we as humans hide our intimacy from children but many children do ask their parents how a woman gets pregnant soon after she gets married. I have faced the situation and I am sure many of you readers too.

Hiding condom ads from children serves no purpose. A child's mind must be calmed right from the small age so that s/he will keep some matters to worry about when they are older. Else, they will grow more anxious and may want to try what the experience is. Boys of 9-10 years, taking small children into confidence and doing digital experiments is not a secret anymore. Let us parents adopt a way to comfort out children, when we all do, the youth int he society will be at a comfortable level exposed to the other gender, not aggressive.

Yes, the condom ad is the smiting cord for their questions and we parents must be prepared with our answer.
