Bagalkot, Dec 10: Three people were murdered in two separate incidents of honour killing in Bagalkot district within a span of five days.

In the first incident, newly married couple Sangamesh and Hanumavva from Hungund taluk was hacked to death by Hanumavva’s family.

Three months ago, Sangamesh from Kumbara caste married Hanumavva from Kuruba caste against the wishes of Hanumavva’s family. Sangamesh working as a lineman for Hescom set up a household with his bride in the nearby Aaminagadu village.

Hanumavva’s father Hanumantha Soorara on the pretext of reconciling invited the couple to attend Karthikotsava celebrations.

Sangamesh was killed with lethal weapons allegedly by the father Hanumantha, his brother Gangappa and son Yellappa (16), son-in-law Yellappa Nagarala and friend Channabasavaiah in the sugarcane fields, said Bagalkot Superintendent of Police C B Rishyanth.

The family later killed Hanumavva and placed their bodies on Aminagada-Aihole road. They damaged the couple’s bike and tried make the murder look like a vehicular accident. The accused were arrested in Sangli, Maharashtra and brought back into Karnataka.

Killed for defying panchayat decision

The second incident took place in Jamakandi taluk. Twenty-year-old Sadashiva Kesaragoppa belonging to the Madiga community had fallen in love with a girl from the Valmiki community.

Six months ago, Sadashiva was warned in a village panchayat meeting to keep away from the girl but he defied the rule.

On December 7, the girl’s family tricked Sadashiva into coming to Hulyala village. His head was smashed with a stone and his body was found lying in the government school grounds, police said.

Bagalkot SP Rishyanth says the girl’s brothers Siddappa Halagali, Dundappa Halgali, relatives- Hanumantha Kalolli, Manjuntha Panditha were arrested.

The accused and Sadashiva were friends and worked as stonecutters at the same quarry. Hence, it was easy to trick him, the victims brother told police.

I mentioned in another article... State Govt is sleeping... entire Law and Order is screwed up in the state. No idea how Siddu and his team is able to show their face to public. No ethical power to be on position... complete law and order failure in the state. If strict actions are deployed everywhere , these people will not dare take such actions... but unfortunately... you can pay some amount to state govt and ensure you are taken care... any ways few more months... Karnataka needs a CM like Yogi Adityanath... who just take actions... no 2nd thought...

@ca girishkk, mangalore,No parishad will help when people are still not educated enough and their mind still in a thousand old ritual stage. They dont accept any govt. rules,or dont want too.A change should take place in their mind and heart.what matters to them is caste .They dont want to give up.No humanity ,otherwise they wouldnt kill their own blood and flesh, would atleast let her live happily one would say.Same with boys father, brothers too.what brings whne they are arrested and put them in jail?Dead cant be wakeup to life.May the souls of deceasedones may rest in peace.

There are so deep rooted caste divisions our society, people who set these rules are so ruthless, only brutal murder is punishment to those defy who their order. These caste divisions were there in practice since ancient times.
Those who tried to bring caste less society are really great and noble souls!

    @ Mahes,
Not blaming PM but PM can initiate some action with the help of State leaders and Judiciary to draft a law against rapists. Capital punishment is the only right answer. There should be swift (not fast track) action. Leaders or our system is going on slow motion. All should benefit and not simply reporting such incidents and sitting on the fense to come across next incident.

.Cattle thieves and Beef eaters are lynched killed. Government has all the powers and resources and responsibilities to ensure Cow Malthas are taken care of. Rapists are allowed to grow and victimize bluntly and even killed. Modi was so prompt to introduce Cow Vigilantes. He is interested and has patience and only in election campaigning. That should be given to the CM and local political leaders why PM is wasting his valuable time on election campaigning.?

If people kill a couple for crossing caste barrier in marrying each other, getting killed over inter-faith marriage is a minuscule of wonder.

If tolerance is not within, how can it exist outside ?
