Mangaluru: Police phone-in - permanent solution sought for Nanthoor Circle issue

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Dec 9: Traffic congestion and recent accident at Nanthoor Circle were the main issues raised by the public at the police phone-in programme that was held on Friday, December 8.

Responding to the queries on the traffic issue at Nanthoor circle, T R Sudesh, police commissioner, said, "A suitable solution will be worked out soon in coordination with the engineer and officials of National Highway Authority. A meeting is called on Tuesday, December 12 in order to discuss the traffic system in Mangaluru city,"

A lady caller complained about the seats meant for senior citizens and ladies being occupied by other passengers. In reply, the police commissioner told that it is the responsibility of the bus conductor to make the respective seats available for ladies and senior citizens. If this is not complied, then the same needs to be informed to police immediately.

Attention was sought towards implementing traffic lights on Kavoor-Bondel road by one of the callers. Commissioner replied that a decision will be taken soon after assessing the pros and cons of the suggestion.

A grievance was raised regarding the parking of private buses for a long time, which are plying to distant places like Bengaluru, Mumbai and Belagavi, in the road between P V S circle and Bunts Hostel that is hampering free movement of traffic. The commissioner asked the respective police officials to conduct an investigation and take suitable action on the same.

In addition, issues of two-wheeler riders riding on the footpath near Vijaya Bank at Jyothi junction and Nanthoor junctions, which is causing problems for pedestrians, lack of lighting at State Bank junction and behind Kadri Park, trucks without authorized license transporting goods near Panambur port and MRPL were brought to the notice of the commissioner.

This was the 64th police phone-in programme in which 25 calls were received. Rajaverma Ballal, president of Canara bus owners' association, B P Divakar, vice-president of the association, Hanumantharaya and Uma Prashant, deputy commissioners of police, Manjunath Shetty, assistant commissioner of police were present.

Compared to cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangaluru and other major metropolitan cities, Mangaluru is much less populated. But yes, number of vehicles as compared to the population may be bit more and percentage of accidents is terribly more, it is because of rash, reckless and careless driving. As far as traffic is concerned, I believe it is due to:-
1).Drivers of vehicles is not adhering to traffic rules very strictly. They drive their vehicles at their own whims and fancy even at the cost of the padestrians.2).No proper footpaths for the public to walk.3).Unethical planning of traffic departments.4)Lack of interest, laxity and ignorance to bring the traffic related issues to the notice of respective departments, authorities by our elected representatives,MLAs,MPs.5)Hidden political agenda impede the developments of our city.6)No proper signal lights at various key points.7).Unwanted construction of over-bridges at unwanted places.8).In spite of herculean task in controlling the traffic at certain key points by the traffic police personnel under the scorching sun, they are not taken care of properly and given adequate protection and facility9) Reckless driving by the city bus drivers, two wheelers , rickshaw drivers and private bus drivers etc are the major issues for causing traffic jam.10).No proper bus bays. Private and city bus drivers are stopping at their own will wherever they feel like stopping without bothering for the fellow drivers just for picking up one passenger. 11).Irregular and wrong parking on the side of the main road.12).Long distance luxury buses park their vehicles from PVS Circle to Bunt’s hostel haphazardly causing too much of nuisance to the public even to walk during night time. All these cocktail factors genuinely hamper the traffic system in the city.
Phone in programme by the police department is merely waste of time and just for publicity stunt. What I would like to suggest is construct number of over-bridges at key places like PVS Circle, Bunts hostel, Nanthur etc etc at the earliest possible in co-ordination with concerned departments and authorities. Also construct bus bays and rickshaw stands. All the city, private bus drivers should be instructed strictly to stop their vehicles at their designated places only. Offenders should be severely dealt with and heavily fined, penalized. Traffic rules to be strictly followed in order to streamline the traffic system. Public should also contribute their mite by adhering and co-operating with concerned departments and authorities. Present traffic problem is manmade and artificial. There is a solution for all these problems provided we all join our hands with the concerned department and authorities in solving these burning issues. Where there is a will, there is a way. SOLUTION IS WITHIN US.

Best solution to Nanthoor junction is to call bids from foreign companies and award the contract with deadline of to 8 months! Multinational companies will do a professional job satisfying all the needs for that junction! But who will pay bribes to our babus????

This Police phone in programme is no use at all. Simply show . So far around 50 programme they have conducted but no change. Now also traffic police won't do anything because these bus people will not support them because they have timing in running the buses. Because of buses with timing nothing can be done in Mangalore. And south Kanara. Number of buses are more than passengers. This accident happen mostly in peak hours. The owners are forcing the drivers and conductors to get more collection. Because of all this happens. SIGNAL LIGHTS THAT TOO 24 HOURS WITH CC CAMARA MAY BE THE SOLUTION. Signal light jumpers must be fined.

Mangalore is not an overcrowded place like Bombay, we see and hear more accident in Mangalore than Bombay. Sometimes problems don’t require a solution to solve them, instead they require brains and suggestion from the Traffic Management Team, I would say get rid of the roundabout and fix traffic lights or hanging signal on the intersections with extra timer because of the traffic flow from all four sides, it should work. Enough of lives lost near this roundabout.

Police phone-in programme This programme is waste. Its 64th programme. Still these people have not solved any traffic problems
Bus Horns : All buses have two horns ..When they see police they switch to normal one ..Otherwise they ise the big horn to overtake.
See the traffic in junctions like Nathhor Kaknkandy , Jyothi Balmatta. : One traffic police how can he handle. The junction is been blocked all four sides. Don't block the junction. Let the vehicle before e entrance of the circle one side is clear then leave the other side .But is doesn't happen .There is no driving dicaplane. The speed of busses come from Pumpwell entering near the bypass junction & the speed of express buses from collectors gate ( Hotel prestige side) entering to balmatta circle asif thye are going to kill.

Stop taking lancha from bus owner....everything will fall in place....At present the bus drivers think as if they can drive like as if they have owned the roads of Mangalore and they have the license to kill anyone....it’s just happening because of the police department.....No need to ask the public for ideas

Easiest solution for time being is, to cancel all the private buses and start KSRTC buses instead. There shouldn't be competition between transporting vehicles. The staff of KSRTC buses are more civilized then the private operators.
All those private drivers and conductors should be given good training and then can offer jobs at KSRTC.
All the private buses can be taken over buy KSRTC by paying the right value to the present owners.
If they are not willing, then private owners must start a training center for all the staff and teach them how to drive and how to behave with the public.
Reduce the number of auto rickshaws in the town. There are thousands of them struggling to get passengers.
There should be humps and barricades to slow down the traffic flow into NH 66 from bikarnakatte and kadri.
Once the signal opens for vehicle movement of a particular road, vehicles should not be forced to stop inside the circle.
There should be clear visible STOP lines before entering the circle. Those who violate by crossing without clearance should be punished severely.
All those who cause such accidents, must go through driver's test again to check if he is good enough be a driver of public transport. If he isn't, then suspend the officer who issued him the driving license initially.

    Ksrtc buses not a solution...

Instead arrange some seminars to private bus conductor and driver and teach some good driving rules and ask them to behave with patiently... Drive professionally...

The only solution is to construct a bypass or ring road that will take all the highway traffic outside the city. Right now even if you construct a underpass/overpass here the traffic problem will never be solved because this is a junction where city traffic (bikarnakatte to kadri and vice versa) meet the highway traffic (panambur to padil and panambur to thokottu and vice versa). Meanwhile with the increase in the movement of huge trailer trucks, this place will turn out to be a nightmare for the pedestrians as well as local vehicular traffic. And for people that are asking for a flyover, this has already been termed infeasible by the NHAI because the gradient from pumpwell to nanthur is more than the limits specifed by the NHAI.
Instead of doing cut and paste solutions , implement a permanent solution and that is a bypass.

If Nanthur Flyover is infeasible, what about the Bikkarnakatta Flyover? For whose benefits and self interests it is constructed?Just inspect the service road. Tax payers money is looted in crores. Should we have NHAI at all? Do the authorities execute their work properly? Go and inspect the pathetic condition of Pumpwell circle and the flyover.Where is our MP? Look at the service road conditions of Yekkur,Gorigudda and Ujjodi. NHAI Engineers and the concerned contractos are in deep sleep. Who will wake them up?Nanthur flyover is dropped just because of two buildings on the hilltop, and not because it is infeasible!
