Britain must apologise for Jallianwala Bagh massacre: London Mayor

Amritsar, Dec 6 (IANS): London Mayor Sadiq Khan said on Wednesday the British government should apologise for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar.

Khan, who arrived in Amritsar on Tuesday, paid tributes to martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre here on Wednesday.

"The British government should apologise for the Jallianwala Bagh shootings. Some people use the word massacre," Khan told the media after visiting the Jallianwala Bagh complex.

Hundreds of innocent Indians, including women, children and old people, were shot dead by the British troops led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer on April 13, 1919.

The victims had no place to escape as the only narrow entrance was blocked by the troops. Colonial era records had put the death toll at around 400, while leaders of the country's freedom movement had put it at over 1,000.

Though British monarch, Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Phillip, had visited the Jallianwala Bagh in October 1997, no apology for the massacre was offered.

British Prime Minister David Cameroon visited Jallianwala Bagh in February 2013 and offered regrets over the killings, stopping short of a formal apology.

Khan, later on Wednesday, visited the Golden Temple complex, where the holiest of Sikh shrines, Harmandir Sahib, is located and offered prayers.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) gave Khan a 'siropa' (robe of honour) during the visit.

Khan also visited the Langar hall, the largest community kitchen in the world, of the shrine complex and partook langar while sitting on the floor.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and others met Khan at a dinner hosted for him.

Khan, who was on a three-city tour of India, visiting Mumbai, New Delhi and Amritsar, later crossed over into Pakistan from the Attari-Wagah joint check post land border between India and Pakistan, about 30 km from here.

The London Mayor, who is of Pakistani-origin, will also visit Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad in Pakistan.

There are many apologies to be made, but we have never had a single one till date.

One is too many. According to Bill Durant's book the take over of India over 80+ Million Indians died when massacres were committed by the Moguls, the Afghans, the Persians, the Arabs and last but not least the "great freedom fighter" Tipu Sultan whose Jayanthi is celebrated using my tax money which I didn't approve? Ooops, I let it slip.

London Mayor is a supporter of extremist groups. Cannot trust that guy. Just wants to bring his own country down to its knees.

I do agree with the London Mayor Sadiq Khan, must shamelessly staying in Britain. I in fact would ask the British to apologise for looting our country and also left the looters (Politicians) in India.

Khan saab, You have already converted London to a mini pakistan and slowly its turning to be a Jihadi hub. You have to look into this immediately rather than advising on somehting that has happened 100 years ago.

Indeed... Britain is changing...very dissappointing, more of a Jihadi Hub.
Future will see a clash of Christanity and Islam in Europe.

I guess Muslims should apologise to India and Hindus for 800 years of atrocities to heal the wounds before asking the Brits to apologise.
