Mangaluru, Nov 25: The petition filed by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), duly questioning an ordinance passed by Karnataka government paving way for holding of Kambalas , came up for hearing before the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday November 24. The SC adjourned hearing in the case to December 12.

PETA, whose petition was referred to the three-judge bench of the SC, is arguing that the way in which an ordinance was brought to circumvent the proper legal process was not in order. It has been questioning the legal validity of this ordinance and claiming that animal violence is a part of Kambala.

Hearing in this case began on November 6. After arguments on November 13 and 17, the petition was adjourned to November 24. During the hearing on Friday, lawyer for Karnataka government brought to the notice of the bench that Kambala bill has already been passed by the state legislature. Thereafter, the SC bench adjourned hearing in the case to December 12.

Three Kambalas have been lined up to be held before December 12. Hokkadigoli Kambala is being organized today, with Mangaluru Kambala and Baradibeedu Kambala having been scheduled for December 3 and 9 respectively.

The Kambala bill that has got the assent of Karnataka legislature will get the asset of the governor before it is published in the state gazette. Therefore, convener of Kambala Academy, Gunapal Kadamba, said that he is confident that Kambalas will be held as per schedule during this season.

It is high time that organizations like PETA be investigated. They are disrupting the centuries old traditions of the societies in pursuit of their "agenda". Investgate where they get funds for all these court cases which is not cheap.
