'My appeal was not for or against any party,' says Gandhinagar Archbishop

Ahmedabad, Nov 24 (Zee News): Gandhinagar Archbishop Thomas Macwan has said he his controversial letter regarding the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections was not in support of or against any particular political party.

"My appeal is not against any party or in favour of any party. I have just asked people to vote according to their conscience and vote for those who are more open to secularism and constitutional values," said Macwan, reported news agency ANI.

Macwan's letter to clergymen, dated November 21, had sparked controversy for its appeal to save the country from 'nationalist forces'. He had also said there was a growing sense of 'sense of insecurity' among minorities, OBCs, BCs and the poor, among others.

He had appealed for prayers for "divine intervention" and to vote for candidates who would "safeguard people against discrimination".

The RSS-affiliated Legal Rights Observatory (LRO) had complained to the Election Commission, calling Macwan's letter "highly provocative and objectionable", reported DNA. The complaint said Macwan's letter clearly alludes to the BJP and RSS.

The LRO complaint also alleged that the aim of the letter was to spread " rumors to create clashes between various social groups and also making baseless allegations against Nationalists Forces".

The Supreme Court had ruled in January that it is illegal to seek votes in the name of religion, caste, race, community or language.

Macwan's appeal for prayers

"The results of this election are significant and will have its repercussion and reverberation throughout our beloved nation. It will influence the future course of our country," Macwan's letter read.

"We are aware that the secular and democratic fabric of our country is at stake. Human rights are being violated. The constitutional rights are being trampled. Not a single day goes without an attack on our churches, church personnel, faithfuls or institutions."

"The democratic fabric of the country is at stake amidst growing sense of insecurity among the minorities, Other Backward Class (OBC), Backward Class, poor, etc," he added.

One can understand here the archbishop’s statement is biased even though he claims to have not directed either against or in favour of any party. It would have been appropriate if he had advised against voting both anti-nationalists and pseudo-secularists.

I read the letter written by this Bishop and I did not see anything wrong in it. The letter clearly emphasis the need to protect real democracy, to pick and choose the candidate carefully while voting. No party name has been taken on the entire letter. However, am I surprised that RSS and communal elements jumping to conclusion? Not at all. They will feel the heat naturally as they are the ones who are trying to break our united and peaceful India. If there is chaos in today's India, it is squarely because of this extreme elements who have been given a long rope by our world famous Feku...Mitroo PM. The saying "Show me your friends and I will tell you what you are" by Victor Hugo, aptly describes our PM.

The archbishop was urging Indians to back civic nationalism instead of religious nationalism. The Archbishop is opposed to turning India into a Hindu Pakistan.

Sir, don’t care. You spoke your heart. Many eminent persons have already expressed their displeasure over growing level of intolerance since 2014 and the latest to join the club are the actors Mr. Kamal Hasan and Mr. Prakash Raj.

After a unsuccessful attempt by begging Pakistan to defeat Modo, Congress is now trying to take Vatican help to defeat BJP.

Whatever it is, these people won't vote for BJP anyways, and am sure BJP is also not interested in their votes.

Archbishp says, there is a growing sense of insecurity' among minorities, OBCs, BCs and the poor, among others. If i use a small piece of paper and add the poplation of minorities, OBCs, BCs and the poor it comes to around 90% of the population of this country. So the 10% of miniscule population is creating fear on the 90% of india population!!!!.. I cannot make any sense out of this.
