Mangaluru, Nov 23: Dr Ajoy Kumar, native of Kalathar, Mailottu, Mulky, who is a former IPS officer, has risen to become the president of Congress in Jharkhand state. The way in which he rose to become party president in north Indian state is really impressive.

Ajoy is the son of Sanjeev Bhandary and Vatsala Bhandary from near Mulky. After securing MBBS degree, he appeared for public service commission's examination and got selected as IPS officer. Since 1986, he served Bihar state and also Jharkhaand, which was carved out of Bihar. After retirement, he served Tata company for sometime before entering politics. He efficiently served the field of politics in different capacities.

During his term as superintendent of police in several districts of Bihar and Jharkhand, Ajoy earned the distinction of being an encounter specialist which helped him to establish himself in political field. He also had earned President's medal for his meritorious service as IPS officer.

After entering politics, initially he had joined Jharkhand Vikas Morcha and gained in stature. He got elected as MP as a candidate of that party in the bypoll from Jamshedpur constituency. Just before 2014 general election, he joined the Congress and fought Lok Sabha election but could not register victory. Although he sought election to Rajya Sabha from Karnataka he last year, he had to shelve the idea as he did not get positive response here. After serving as Congress spokesperson, he was made president of Jharkhand Congress on November 17 at the instance of Rahul Gandhi.

Ajoy, speaking to a Kannada daily, said that Rahul Gandhi has given him a new responsibility of building the party in the state. He said he will tour the entire state and strengthen the party to reach a formidable position by next assembly election. He also expressed desire to give more representation to young politicians. He said he will do this with the blessings of elders and exuded confidence of becoming successful in the next election. He also said he is happy to be the head of a political party in north India after coming from an ordinary family in coastal Karnataka.
