Mangaluru: DST-Inspire Science Internship camp held at Science Center, Pilikula

Mangaluru, Nov 21: Mangalore University College, here conducted a five day Inspire Science internship camp at the Science centre of Pilikula from November 14 to 18.

This Inspire Science camp was sponsored by the department of science and technology, New Delhi. Inspire camp (Innovation in science pursuit for inspired research) is designed by a DST for the I and II PUC science students with highest score in their 10th standard. Motivating talented youth to take up research as a personal undertaking by rubbing shoulders with global icons of science including nobel prize winners, is the objective of Inspire Internship. The motto of the camp is to initiate the interest in basic science and research in young minds.



Dr Umesh Sharma from DST, New Delhi inaugurated the Inspire camp on Nov 14. Dr Udaykumar M A, principal of the university college welcomed all the participants. Dr Bharathi Prakash, head, deparment of microbiology introduced the camp motto to all as a camp coordinator. Prof T J Pandian, an S S Bhatnagar awardee from Madurai and Prof G D Khedkar, director of PHCDBS from Marathwada University, Aurangabad, Prof K V Rao director of science center were present at the programme. Prasanna executive director of Pilikula Nisargadhama encouraged the students to explore the science centre.

A total of 190 participants from 12 different colleges in and around the city were present for this camp. The camp commenced daily with physical excersice and yoga activities. For this camp various eminent scientists from well reputed institutes all over India were invited to share their knowledge and interact with camp students. Inspire camp also provided hands–on practical demonstrations and field visits along with regular scientific sessions. Success stories and scientific videos were also displayed for the students. Self awareness and communication skill talks were included as the evening activities. Science kits were disributed to all the participants.

On November 18 at the valedictory programmes, Prof Lokesh M, registrar of Mangalore University presided over the function. Dr Udaykumar, principal of the college, Prof K V Rao, Prof L S Shashidhara, an S S Bhatnagar awardee from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research of Pune were present. On the last day, students carried lots of take home messages and in their feedback, requested to conduct a similar Inspire camp next year too. Dr Bharathi Prakash concluded the programme with the vote of thanks.

Sumangala C H, Shwetha, Dr Nagarathna, Dr Shobha, Dr Verbhadrappa, Dr Bhrathi Pillar, Dr Subramanya Bhat, Dr Lakshman, Dr Sanjay of University College, Mangalore were also present at the programme.

This was the second Inspire science camp conducted by University College, Mangalore and this year's camp was remarkable as 2017-2018 is the 150th year of the University College.
