Belagavi: Liquor ban impossible in Karnataka, says Siddaramaiah

Belagavi, Nov 21 (DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday told the Legislative Assembly that prohibiting liquor sale in the state was "impossible." Siddaramaiah was responding to demands from the Opposition BJP seeking total ban on liquor.

"It is impossible for the government to ban liquor," he said. "Liquor prohibition has not worked anywhere. Look at Gujarat, which is supposed to be a dry state. See for yourself how well the liquor ban is being implemented," Siddaramaiah said.

Siddaramaiah asked the BJP to convince Prime Minister Narendra Modi to formulate a national policy on liquor prohibition. "If there's a national policy on this, Karnataka will support it," he said.

Excise Minister R B Thimmapur informed the Assembly that the government had generated Rs 11,000 crore in revenues from liquor sales.

BJP leader C T Ravi demanded a ban on liquor stating it was "destroying families." Leader of Opposition Jagadish Shettar pointed out that the Excise Department had issued directions to wine stores specifying liquor sales target. "Why is the government doing this," he asked.

I appreciate Mr.C.T.Ravi for his concerns over families of drunkards. But total ban is not advisable. Instead of that government can add more restrictions , closure of roadside liquor shops, heavy penalty for intoxicated alcholic, extra cess for above the limit buyer, ration system like Kerala state etc. I once again recall that former BJP government stopped digital gambling and country liquor shops (TOTTE ,a popular synonym for Mandya cane liquor in Dk and Udupi). If Siddhu has some concerns over new, young generation, it's the right time for him . Otherwise, Scotch whisky, fish fry, chicken kakab in night, hangovern headache in the morning, tight sleep in the noon....that we don't like sir. ..!...?

Liquor Ban can be done. However, where is the data? Liquor ban run up to the election is mere election gimmick.
I presume that Kannadigas are responsible and indulge in this vice responsibly. Most importantly, it is a good revenue for the government. Places like Bangalore with a cosmopolitan fabric are liked primarily because of clubs and bars where not just locals but also people form outside spend their money and time.
Bihar needed liquor ban as alcohol abuse was endemic amongst poor people who spent all their earnings on liquor. Kerala also was right to enforce ban as it was major problem. If Karnataka too has such an issue, then sufficient data coupled with how the government can make up for lost revenue due to liquor ban must also be provided. Else, it is election gimmick.

Sale and drinking of liquor generate revenue to Govt. and enjoyment for the people who drinks respectively + Employment for who manufacture and distribute. I strongly recommend liquor as I am also a consumer of liquor. CM is right. Vote for Siddaramaiah. Drink 30 ml to 60 ml daily. No harm if you eat food after that.

Good move from our CM. Karnataka is in transformation era under the leadership of CM. Siddu. Say if the Government bans the liquor what are all the benefits unless we change our narrow minded thoughts? First and the most important is to STOP fighting, killing in the name of religion and politics then think of banning Liquor and cow slaughtering. Peaceful and healthy discussions only can bring the changes and solutions.

Its true what CM said if at all liquor ban is implemented sure people will go for drugs, for example look at Kerala state what is happening there, since liquor was banned drug addicts increased. do you want same think to happen in Karnataka?. Banning will no help in anyways. If it was because of liquor then families would have been spoiled from ancient time. Liquor is not the substance spoiling the family it is the peoples mentality.

The biggest example of alcohol ban not working is the prohibition in USA from 1920 to 1933. What it did was make a lot of money for criminals. With all the money they made through liquor sales they could bribe politicians and police.

Guys its simple. If you want to drink , drink little ,have good food and enjoy your life in this beautiful world where you live for some years. If you don't want to drink, don't drink but don't advice others not to drink. This will not work anywhere in the whole world .Don't disturb anyone and your family. No one will bother you. This is a simple mathematics of life. Decision is yours.

What all things you can ban?? Ban all Chinese products if you can!! At least people will live long life.
Banning is not the solution dear, its education. Terrorism cannot be eradicated by banning dynamites or chemicals, its the education, mean right education. Banning is destruction. Instead of draining the brains working towards banning everything, which is very simple, put your minds in transforming education into skill based learning, better healthcare, sustainable farm products, state of the art infrastructure, an atmosphere of peace and harmony for inviting better foreign investments etc, so automatically, no need to waste time on waste talks.
It is rightly said, an IDLE MIND is a DEVIL'S workshop..
