Mangaluru: Rape attempt at night - accused arrested

Mangaluru, Nov 21: In an incident which happened on Sunday November 19 night, a youth reportedly tried to rape a lady who was going home by a city bus. Police personnel of Kadri station here have arrested the accused, identified as Muhammed Iftikar (40) from New Delhi, relating to the case.

It is said that the lady was going home after her work hours at about 9.30 pm on Sunday. The accused is said to have pulled at the plait of the lady sitting in the seat in front of him. Later, after the lady alighted from the bus at Bikarnakatte Kaikamba and was walking towards her home, he began to follow her, it is said. The lady, growing panicky, raised an alarm at which some people came running, caught hold of the man, and handed him to police.

The accused, who works in the city as coolie, is from New Delhi. He stays in a rented room at Maroli, the police have come to know. A rape attempt case was registered in Kadri police station against Iftikar. He was produced in the court, whereupon he was remanded to judicial custody.
