Belagavi: BJP seeks probe on Indira Canteens serving less quantity of food

Belagavi, Nov 20: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar on Monday, November 20, sought a probe into reports that Indira canteens were serving food below the stipulated quantity specified by the government.

Shettar made the demand while participating in a discussion in the Assembly.

Shettar said that while the quantity stipulated per plate of lunch is 300 grams of rice, 150 grams of sambar and 50 grams of chutney, what is served was much less that the specified quantity. “This leaves the consumers dissatisfied,” he alleged.

"Media reports have exposed that those who have bagged contracts to prepare food at Indira canteens are cheating consumers by serving them less than the stipulated quantity. The government should immediately order a probe into the matter," he demanded.

    Tax payers money is used for this canteen and Siddu and Congress thinks that they are paying it from their pocket. We will know the truth next year on Indira Canteens.

    While serving food, if you tell 'svalpa haki', you will get lesser than normal quantity. If some people are not able to eat the entire '300 grams of rice, 150 grams of sambar and 50 grams of chutney' then serving slightly less will not destroy their satisfaction but will indeed save food.

    In July 2015, the MP government banned the protein-rich egg in the state’s anganwadi or pre-school centres that cater to children from poor families. It also banned it from the mid-day meal scheme in government schools.It was reported that MP CM Chouhan took the decision at the behest of the influential Jain leaders.
    Earlier, India used to define the poverty line based on a method defined by a task force in 1979. It was based on expenditure for buying food worth 2,400 calories in rural areas, and 2,100 calories in urban areas. In 2011, the Suresh Tendulkar Committee defined the poverty line on the basis of monthly spending on food, education, health, electricity and transport. A person who spends Rs. 27.2 in rural areas and Rs. 33.3 in urban areas a day are defined as living below the poverty line. For a family of five that spends less than Rs. 4,080 and Rs. 5,000 in rural and urban areas respectively is considered below the poverty line. This has been criticised for fixing the poverty line too low. According to a committee headed by former Reserve Bank governor C Rangarajan, there were 363 million people, or 29.5% of India’s 1.2 billion people, who lived in poverty in 2011-12. The Rangarajan panel considered people living on less than Rs. 32 a day in rural areas and Rs. 47 a day in urban areas as poor.
    The recent debates do reveal that the BJP as a party in regime loves the ban as a weapon, be it food, books, film, or body behaviour. Amma canteen in the verge of closure after her political murder. Is Indira Canteens next?

    The governing Congress party in the southern Indian state of Karnataka recently set up Indira canteens in the state capital, Bangalore, which serve more than 200,000 cheap meals every day. The BBC's Geeta Pandey joins the queue to sample the treats and comes back more than satisfied.
    It's just after 07:00 and a crowd has already begun to gather outside a squat building, located near the bustling City Market.
    At 07:30, the gate is thrown open and the crowds rush in. There's some jostling but soon people fall into line, impatient bodies pressed into each other.
    The queue moves quickly. Men and women walk up to a small window, hand over their money and receive one or two green plastic tokens, which are then exchanged at the counter for food.
    They pick up their bright yellow trays and move to a table in the room or outside in the courtyard to eat.
    I too buy my tokens and join the queue for breakfast. On the menu are idlis (savoury cakes traditionally eaten across south India for breakfast), pongal (a popular rice dish) and some coconut chutney.
    The food is fresh, warm, flavourful and delicious. And the best part? Each dish costs a mere five rupees, or about 13 cents, which is as good as free.
    Since they opened their doors on 16 August, the canteens named after Indira Gandhi - the Indian prime minister assassinated in 1984 - have been drawing in the crowds.
    The idea is clearly borrowed from the hugely popular and successful Amma canteens, started by J Jayalalitha, the late chief minister of the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. I ate at one Amma canteen last year and the food was good. At Indira canteen, it's even better.

    If Indeera Canteen is really helping poor to have daily quality food in cheap price then one should not even think of criticize it. and about quantity they have to serve food according to the price tagged.
