Bengaluru: Congress pressure led to cut in GST rates - Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Nov 20 (DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said the Congress deserved credit for the reduction in GST rates, saying it was done after the party staged nationwide protests against the high rates.

Speaking at the birth centenary of former prime minister Indira Gandhi at the KPCC office, Siddaramaiah took on the opposition BJP for mocking the state government's mid-year review of the state's finances that had allayed fears of an economic slowdown due to GST.

BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa had pointed out that the government strayed from the Congress stand on GST that it was Gabbar Singh Tax. "The GST was a UPA reform and we played a role in the reduction of tax rates," Siddaramaiah said.

"The BJP is concentrating on making Karnataka Congress-free, but we are focusing on making the state hunger-free," Siddaramaiah said, referring to the Indira Canteens. He also took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Indira Gandhi opened the doors of the banks for the poor by nationalising them. Modi closed the doors of banks for the poor through demonetisation."

KPCC president G Parameshwara said BJP leaders Ananthkumar Hegde (Union minister), K S Eshwarappa, Yeddyurappa and Shobha Karandlaje were "unfit" to be politicians. "The BJP is desperate. That's why even a Union minister is indulging in loose talk," he said. He was referring to Hegde's comment that the ruling Congress, which recently celebrated the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, would go to the extent of celebrating the Jayanti of Mumbai terror attack convict Ajmal Kasab.

Parameshwara said the party celebrated Indira Gandhi's birth centenary by lighting 100 candles in every district.

When Jootley introduced 28% GST... Bhakths celebrated like anything!

When GST rate is reduced to 18% for many commodities due to pressure from opposition and business community, again same bhakths welcomed it!

I think, FEKU/Jootley should have imposed GST of 50% & then after opposition, they should have reduced it to 28%... hehehe... Bhakths are there for anything, as long as it is ordered by FEKU!!!

Implementation of GST by BJP is similar to a security guard ousting engineer and trying to build the building on his own with engineer's idea.

The Gujarati Bullet Train has significant initial costs (running into 10s of 1000s of crores) as well as a potential annual 5,000 crores operational costs.

These costs are to be borne by the Indian taxpayer regardless of the long-term Japanese loan at low interest.

The Bullet Train Government obviously did not do its numbers properly at an early stage.

So GST at 28% would have provided the funds!

    But that backfired too badly.

Many small businesses have closed down. No eat-all-you-want-GST, and no easy funds for the Gujarati Bullet Train.

Yes, as per congress supporters, forget GST, this world itself is created by Congress.

Here is the fact for you

    * February 1986: Finance Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh proposes a major overhaul of the excise taxation structure in the budget for 1986-87.
    * 2000: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpyee introduces the concept, sets up a committee headed by the then West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta to design a GST model.
    * 2003: The Vajpayee government forms a task force under Vijay Kelkar to recommend tax reforms.

Your Congress is nowhere in the picture. And you make false claim that "BJP never heard about GST".
