Catholic priest urges Christians to abandon the word Christmas

Edinburgh, Nov 18 (IANS): An Irish Catholic priest has called for Christians to stop using the word Christmas because it has been hijacked by "Santa and reindeer", the media reported on Saturday.

Father Desmond O'Donnell said Christians of any denomination need to accept Christmas now has no sacred meaning, reports the Guardian.

O'Donnell's comments follow calls from a right-wing pressure group for a boycott of Greggs bakery in the UK after the company replaced baby Jesus with a sausage roll in a nativity scene.

"We've lost Christmas, just like we lost Easter, and should abandon the word completely," O'Donnell said.

"We need to let it go, it's already been hijacked and we just need to recognise and accept that."

O'Donnell said he was not seeking to disparage non-believers. "I am simply asking that space be preserved for believers for whom Christmas has nothing to do with Santa and reindeer.

"My religious experience of true Christmas, like so many others, is very deep and real - like the air I breathe. But non-believers deserve and need their celebration too, it's an essential human dynamic and we all need that in the toughness of life."

A registered psychologist and author, O'Donnell said the meaning of Christmas had eroded over time and become commercialised.

XMAS stands for Commercial Christmas, but Christmas stands for true celebration of devotional and spiritual Christmas. Dropping the word Christmas, and without replacing it with an appropriate word is to create more problems in the minds of simple people.

Yes I can understand what the priest means.I t has so commercialized ,that owrd christmas, today if you ask some kids ,what is a christmas, what is done on that day, many answred in one ton here, sometime back,a day to get presents and give presents.Do you have a answer to this.?For many christmas is a day to cook sweets and special foods,a day with stress ,so that nothing goes wrong on this special day.Christmas is the time many vendoors, shops make half of years earning.Sadly many countrys dont give holidays on christmas.Thank God we enjoy two days holidays for christmas ,Easter, and pentecost.(unless saturday and sunday too fall on this day)But these days have their charm, eagerness to get with family, with or without the word saying or any other anti mixers.

No matter what word you use the word, a day has been chosen to celebrate the greatest teacher of all times Jesus Christ.

There are over 7 billion people on the planet and it is impossible to control each and everyone thoughts, words and acts. There will always be someone doing or saying somethings that interest others and soon he or she will have a following.

Long story short, let Christmas prevail which is a remembrance of his birth, and his short life that changed the face of this earth forever.

Any new word will be commercialised and spoiled in the same manner. So better to retain the original word Christmas. For devotees, commercialization won't matter ...

What is the Universal accepted word for the celebration of " Birth of Jesus Christ". Isn't it Christmas.
It is the day of celebration.

While I understand the reasoning of O'Donnell, I cannot imagine Christmas without Christ, and I do believe the very vast majority of Christians do so believe.
But Christmas should be a public holiday at least for Christians and in a country like India which has public holidays for so many jayantis, it is time for government to allot a minimum number of days which different faiths can have public holidays on some of their most venerated feasts and work on the public holidays allotted to other faiths. Thus Christians should have public holidays on Christmas and Easter days, the two most revered days, Jewish people can have their own and so also Muslims on Ramadan and other equally important holy days. All in all, there should be a set number of holidays for religious events on which days those belonging to particular faiths will have public holidays which days can be made up by working on public holidays of other faiths. Thus, economy keeps rolling and there is no "bundh".

It's hard to imagine Christmas without Christ,
    Jesus without a Cross
Its for the devotees to differentiate celebrations or functions without knowing their significance.
Any religious functions are there for the followers to remember their meaning & purpose & for the rest a reason to enjoy irrespective of the occasion
Now most religious festivities have become Global events to celebrate & to enjoy irrespective of the religion, caste, creed or color not withstanding.
Corporations see only a marketing & profit making opportunity in starting & spreading their celebrations sans their meaning or purpose. These things will stay no matter the people become religious or atheists.

Mr.Dev you have rightly said.I saw one video recently which was circulated in the WhatsApp no one knew what's the meaning of Christmas. So Irish priest has rightly said that we do not need a word Christmas if we just want to enjoy. It's the birthday of Jesus Christ where he descended from heaven leaving all his majesty and power to redeem the mankind from the clutches of the devil. That's why the angels sung GLORY To GOD in the highest heavens and peace to people on Earth..From this day the Satan is fighting with the mankind not to use the name of Jesus Christ. So you can see people writing X'mas. So the word Christ is eaten away by the people who live in adultery and fornification.

Although it is true and come a long way Christians can distinguish between the commercial and celebratory aspect of it because of its popularity and its sanctity the spiritual aspect of it. But it is worthwhile to remind Christians time and again especially the new generation.

yes the right wing is in. It is not slapping any partying young girls, nor it is blowing itself with explosives. it is only asking true followers not buy products from some maniac bakery which is insulting their sentiments, a incident like the picture of ganesha used in autralia for advertising.

The government will take the words of the Irish Catholic priest Father Desmond O'Donnell very seriously and issue a notice to all states to forgo Christmas. The political observers said it is an important mile stone to reduce the number of public holidays in India. ............ just kidding.
Advanced wishes for a Merry Christmas to all. just a month away..
