Committed to upholding freedom of press: Modi

New Delhi, Nov 16 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday wished journalists on "National Press Day" and said his government is "fully committed to upholding freedom of press and expression in all forms".

In a series of tweets on Thursday morning, Modi termed free press as the "cornerstone of a vibrant democracy" and said that "the role of the media in giving voice to the voiceless is commendable".

"My greetings to all friends in the media on National Press Day. I appreciate the hard work of our media, especially the reporters and camerapersons, who tirelessly work on the ground and bring forth various news that shapes national as well as global discourse," he tweeted.

"The role of the media in giving voice to the voiceless is commendable. Over the last three years, the media has added great strength to 'Swachh Bharat Mission' and effectively furthered the message of cleanliness," Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that we were witnessing the rise of social media and news being consumed through mobile phones. "I am sure these advancements will further the reach of the media and make the media space even more democratic and participative," he said.

"May our media space be used more and more to showcase the skills, strengths and creativity of 125 crore Indians," he said.

Joke of the year of the PM and the BJP being committed to the freedom of the press. The press was more free even during the emergency. All the TV channels have been gagged or converted into propoganda machines for the Govt. Democracy is in danger if this situation continues. Ths is nothing but double speak to mislead the common man.

Speaking at the platinum jubilee event of the Daily Thanthi, the PM quoted Gandhi to say the misuse of power by the media is “criminal”.

“Editorial freedom must be used wisely in public interest. The freedom to write, does not include the freedom to be ‘factually incorrect’. Mahatma Gandhi said: ‘The press is called the Fourth Estate. It is definitely a power, but, to misuse that power is criminal,'” he said.

Basically, the government does not provide the means through which journalism can be done with responsibility. Coming from a person whose followers on social media have only abused journalists and one of his ministers has even gone to the extent of coining the word “presstitutes” for journalists, his speech is rather interesting. I do not know how his speech will be taken seriously but I do believe media should focus on greater accuracy and ethics.
Now, this is a prime minister who never answers questions of the media; his is a government which has problems with the Right to Information Act; it never responds to media enquiries. He wants to close down the transfer of information. Basically, the government is not interested in media which is trying to cross-check facts. It wants a one-way transfer of information, which is provided by the officials of the government in its own interests.
Would the prime minister tell me how he responds to the fact that senior journalist Gauri Lankesh’s killers have still not been found?
Where does he stand on an issue like the media polarising public opinion between Hindus and Muslims, catering to more extremist voices?
After Modi’s speech on media, government’s ‘doublespeak’ does not seems to upholding the freedom of press.

Since Mr. Modi took office in 2014, journalists have faced increasing pressures. They risk their careers — or lives — to report news that is critical of the government or delves into matters that powerful politicians and business interests do not want exposed. The temptation to self-censor has grown, and news reports are increasingly marked by a shrill nationalism that toes the government line.

Stop paid media first before upholding of freedom. Media owned by politicians or their associates should be banned to maintain harmony in the society.

What freedom of press are we talking about? These days channels and journalists are being bought and made to parrot the government's words. Anyone who opposes the government is termed anti-national. This is a clear case of playing fast and loose.
