Mangaluru: Shiradi Ghat road closure from Jan 1 for modern technology development

Mangaluru, Nov 15: Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75 between the city and Bengaluru will remain closed for vehicular traffic from January 1 for taking up road development work that has already been sanctioned. This information was given by PWD minister, Dr H C Mahadevappa.

The minister was responding to query raised by BJP MLC, Capt Ganesh Karnik, in the legislative council on Tuesday November 14. The minister said that there are plans to complete the road works before June 2018 so that the road can be opened for traffic at the beginning of the next rainy season.

"Out of 26 km stretch of Shiradi Ghat section of the national highway, 13 km has already been developed by using modern technology. The balance 13 km of the road is being developed in the second phase. Tender has been finalized and it has been sent to central government for approval. Work will begin once the approval is received," the minister clarified.

He revealed that the financial bid for Rs 74 crore submitted by Ocean Construction Pvt Ltd Mangaluru, whose tender was found to be the lowest relating to rigid pavement works from the part of the national highway between Addahole and Kempuhole, was sent to the central government for approval on September 27. He added that once approval is received, work will begin on January 1.

    Guys before you complaint about first phase of 13km... I feel the work is superbly done and it have done in a moderate way... no other roads have done in that way with a reflector and a Singn board which indicates the turn and everythIng road.. Guys before you people comment on the first phase u have to travel once and look at the roads...

    Why this lapse. Completing one stretch (13 kms) earlier and commencing the remaining work of 13 kms now is sheer nonsence. Why the entire stretch of 26 kms not completed earlier. But whats the guarantee that the present project will be completed by June 2018. ?

    minister clearly told that lowest bidder got the project. Don't think technology and quality is a factor while giving the contract. shame on us to call we are the super country. A simple road which is a basic necessity is not addressed for decades... every now and then, road closed, repair done, small stretch built new... now again closing... then again open... how stupid. When they closed the road last time itself, it should been done completely in single stretch. it's all drama... multiple projects, multiple vendors, multiple cuts.. multiple incomes.... fate of this country.

    why cant we hear names like L & T or any reputed companies while they give this type of project , No local companies can handle such roads. Hope the contractors and not connected to the people who were doing these roads from the past many years or the state will be the same.

    In the same strech from BC Road to Addole(65km), 4 lane concrete road project is already awarded to L & T and the work is under progress. If the road is fully closed work will be fast.

    LnT won't bid for a paltry 13km stech. Expressway they might, but they do quote a quite a high price. All over the world bids are awarded to the lowest bidder meeting the technical reqiorements.

    All the black money netted by the government pales in comparison to the Karnataka tax payers money literally going to dust due to perennial repairs of these roads. Sure we have done the Mangalayana and aim towards the moon. We have not implemented the basic required road design to withstand monsoon rains. Let me explain.

    1. Any tar road should be slanted with the middle having an upward curve. This allows the rain water to go to the sides. Not done ! Not rocket science, simple logic.

    2. Sides of the roads there are no trenches ( thodu) for the rain water to flow ! If there are, there is heavy overgrowth. Zero maintenance of sides of the roads. Where should the rain water go?

    Any water laden road when there is vehicular movement, will get destroyed with tar coming out in flakes of dust.
    Now add all the cost of repairs past 10 years : very huge sum of money( tax payers money) gone literally to dust!!!!

    Sure we are educated people. We have loads of engineering colleges, brightest engineers. Yet no one seem to notice the waste of resources . Lets not blame one political party. We ourselves are responsible by keeping silent.

    That means we have to suffer till end of December 2017 and then again use alternative route for another 6 months. I was travelling on Monday Night to Bangalore and we were stuck in Shiradi ghat for 3 hours because of truck break down and big potholes. When the first phase of 13kms was completed they assured us that next phase of 13kms will be done soon but its been sometime no one is interested. I'm sure they don't start the second phase in January 2018 because above report clearly says request has been sent to Central Govt in September and they will start work only once the approval is received. All our leaders are busy in Election campaign and i doubt if they really have time to follow up and seek necessary approval.

    I think Indians should hire foreign companies from Japan, Malaysia or South Korea for quality roads.Because it has proven time and again that Indian companies lack quality and competency.L&T does carryout good road construction but only abroad.

    Modern, my foot! I have vowed not to use this road till 2025. What prevents the Govt from ordering the contractors who did the road in the first place from carrying out rectification for free? - absolute lack of will and overwhelming selfish self-interest.

    Shiradi ghat is more closed than remained open nowadays. Of late, it is a milking cow for ruling politicians with no dry spell. Newly laid stretches and repairs are not even lasting a full year. Neither the contractor nor officials responsible to oversee the works are made accountable conspicuously. A hurried work during eve of election will ensure the last tranche of resources to the election funds. India has not changed much from mid eval period. Then Ghory and Ghasny came from Central Asia to loot with element of humanity but now it is ruthless insiders. The story continues....!
