Three deemed varsities from DK, Udupi among 123 told to drop 'university' from names

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 14: As many as 123 deemed-to-be-universities across the country, including some from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, have been asked not to use the word 'university' in their names.

The University Grants Commission, the apex body for higher education in the country, in a letter dated November 10, has asked deemed-to-be-universities to drop the word 'university' from their names, in accordance with a Supreme Court order.

According to Supreme Court order dated Novemer 3, the use of the word 'university' violates Section 23 of the UGC Act, 1956, which states that 'no institution, whether a corporate body or not, other than a university established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act shall be entitled to have the word ?university? associated with its name in any manner whatsoever'. The Apex Court thus asked the 123 deemed-to-be-universities to drop the word from their names by December 3.

Some of the deemed-be-universities included in the list of 123 institutions are Yenepoya University, Nitte University, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), and Bengaluru-based Christ University.

The Supreme Court bench consisting of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit also stated that deemed-to-be-university cannot conduct open and distant learning courses from the next academic year (2018-19) unless permitted to do so by the authorities authorities.

"We restrain all deemed-to-be-universities to carry on any courses in distance education mode from the Academic Session 2018-2019 onwards unless and until it is permissible to conduct such courses in distance education mode," the bench said.

The bench directed UGC to take appropriate steps to implement Section 23 of the UGC Act, 1956.

PRESENT EDUCATION TREND IS ONLINE EDUCATION and Degrees.
Our GOOD OLD UGC need to stick on the quality rather than name etc.. LET THEM CERTIFY
"QUALITY OF EDUCATION in each of the UNIVERSITIES" and "FACULTY Profiles"
It will serve the purpose and students will select universities based on their needs.(Most of the cases many our Indian UNIVERSITY degrees just namesake and knowledge of the field & application is ZERO)

See how "UNIVERSITY OF THE PEOPLE" becoming popular in USA and online education for everyone across the WORLD just for a cost of $100 per course/subject..

Change the UGC act. Plain and simple. If all join together it will not be difficult to achieve. Existing rules may be outdated. Any rule and regulation is subject to revision.

Now u can find 100s of new universities with deemed n deemed to be status mushrooming throughout India many having fancy names like 'Lovely' etc.!! Cannot understand how the functioning of these universities r monitored!! On the face of it, many look like degree churning machines by charging sky high fees! Even in DK there is a big prolifimeration of universities who admit students with 45/50% marks churning out high % of passouts??! No doubt it is said that only a small % r industry ready!!

So what happens to those who study there or have studied there?

Some of these institutions like Indian Institute of Science and Manipal University have produced world level CEOs like Satya Nadella .

Changing a name does not take away the quality education provided?

What happens to the degrees issued ?

Its time these universities joined together and got a stay order from a higher bench of the supreme Court

A deemed university or "deemed-to-be-university" is a status granted in India by the Department of Higher Education to certain educational institutions meeting specific standards of research and excellent scholarship comparable to any university. Tata Institute of Social Sciences is a deemed University and is held with high prestige. Hence, all degrees of the above institutions are recognized, like any university. However, people outside India, it may create confusion or doubt.

May Be true but what was the Education Ministry/ HRD ministry at the centre and state levels doing all these years?

Why wake up now and throw thousands of lives and educational qualifications in jeopardy?

    Leroy and Rudolf

I fully agree with your views, but what I am saying here is, as long as the status of deemed university is there, the degrees are recognised. Also, I wrote specially in relation to DK and Udipi deemed universities.

Now the fees at these respective deemed universities will come down and in turn the real estate prices also will come down. Just fooling the students and in turn producing fake professionals. Big loss for the admission agents. These universities only business firms not come to do a good job. Instead of university they might start using univercity.

The decision of UGC is right and the deemed universities were using the university name, without a letter of authority, that was wrong. By any means, the standard of education and all aspects of the so called deemed universities will continue to be famous as ever. Only for people who are going out of the country, it will confuse outsiders, whether the institution person studied is a recognized university.

What is in a name ? That the rose we call by any other name, would smell as sweet.

This certainly looks like some sort of revenge... How can they suddenly realize that these 'deemed to be Universities' were using the 'University' tag without authorization after so many-many years? The concerned ministry must concentrate on how to uplift education in the country rather than burden the educators.
