Udupi, Nov 14: Citing operational difficulties, Suzlon Energy which has its manufacturing plant near Padubidri, declared lockout with effect from midnight on Monday November 13. It said that it has been decided to declare lockout under sub-section 2 section, 22 of Industrial Disputes Act.

Suzlon is manufacturing wind energy turbines and blades. The company officials did not give any advance intimation about their intention to declare lockout.

The company has pointed out that between April and October 2017 this year, only 78 blade sets had been manufactured at this facility as against the target of 214. It has observed misconduct and go slow policy followed by the workers in spite of repeated instructions against them, it said. It also added that acts of sabotage had resulted in considerable loss to the company.

The workers in night shift were suddenly sent out of the premises. As a result, over 600 workers including 326 employees of the company have lost their jobs. Since Tuesday morning, a large number of labourers gathered in front of the main gate of the company.

It may be recalled that two weeks back, contract workers of the company had held protest over issues concerning their wages. More than 130 workers had been dismissed thereafter.
