Put down the phones, Pope Francis tells priests and bishops

Vatican City, Nov 10 (Reuters): Pope Francis on Wednesday (Thursday NZ time) chastised priests and bishops who take pictures with their cell phones during masses, saying they should focus on God instead.

"The priest says 'lift up your hearts'. He does not say, 'lift up your cell phones to take pictures,'" Francis told tens of thousands of people at his weekly audience in St Peter's Square, referring to a communion prayer in the Roman Catholic Mass.

In his improvised remarks, he called using cell phones during Mass "a very ugly thing," adding: "It makes me very sad when I celebrate (Mass) here in the piazza or in the basilica and I see so many cell phones held up. Not only by the faithful, but also by some priests and even bishops!

"The Mass is not a show ... so remember, no cell phones!" he said, prompting laughter and applause from the crowd.

Francis, the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, has regularly urged the faithful to be more spiritual and his priests and bishops to be more humble.

Shortly after his election in 2013, he said it pained him to see priests driving flashy cars and eager to use the latest smartphone.

The pope is driven around in a simple blue Ford Focus and is not known to have ever used a cell phone in public since his election.

Church and church premises should not become like a cheap place like market. Let there be some sort of system and principles.

A good piece of advice from our Pope Francis to all of us. Many reminders of keeping the mobiles silent in the church, goes to deaf ears. Even if have expensive cars, you have to stop at any traffic jam. Even if you have a expensive watch, it will still show the same time.

Use technology in the right manner and for the right purpose. Excess luxury can be used for upliftment of the poor and needy. Blessings will pour from above.

Not only phones....Bishops and priests should also put down their luxury and lavish lives and live a simple and exemplary life in real footsteps of Jesus....Just see the luxury these people have..A/c cars, big houses........whereas we ordinary people live an ordinary life......... if one digs in a little bit deeper, the amount of money involved in religion is so much God and spirituality takes a back seat.....its only for us those whom they preach

Our present Pope Francis has all along been a practical God's man. He is the spiritual leader of millions of people. He is indeed a practical man ...... A PEOPLES' MAN concerned about his flock.

His famous expression has been WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE?

May The Good Lord grant our leader long life to enable him to lead his flock on correct lines.

@Tony Mumbai, you didnt find anything else except girls dresses?if it is a dress do you think it will change?Day by day ,years they are changed in lenght or fashion.even dresses of Nuns too .do you too advice them to go back to roots? As the time changes ,things too change.we have to change.who will give a job to a girl nowadays with a old womans dress without any makeupa good job?I dont say one should go everywhere without ,or short dress, but it should be passend ,andnot too awkword.Even when Pope says it will not be change. What pope says is to live simple ,even to Priests and Bishops.Today I heard Pope travels in bus instead of in car.A priest in Poland was dusing in a porsche ,which made people to be loud, and protested. At last now he decided to sell it I heard whether it came from pope ,or not I dont know.

AF.Mangalore, land lines in mangalore so far I heard not function well.Thats why lots of people have cancelled.First they never function properly, their cost of maintaining is more, because wires are cut,or stolen, lineman never appears to repair, without extra cost.bill is tremendous.I heard.second when one goes out of the house ,a mobile is a must in case of emergency to call home etc.so at the same time it can be used as private at home too without more charge.

Jesus's time there were no facilities still he carried out His mission perfectly. We should use facilities but 'as much so much'. Too much dependency on gadgets destroys our independence. Over use of development has destroyed the nature. Protection of nature means protection of oneself. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

Because of too much attachment to technology, cell phones has become another part of human being. He cannot live without that. Even during prayers he cannot part with that.

What Pope said is absolutely right. We are losing the pious moments because of this too much attachment.

What he mean by that is use of cell phone should be a necessity rather than a luxury...What we see in today's religious clergy is exactly opposite..
