Mangaluru, Nov 10: Heavy security has been deployed at the zilla panchayat office here in view of the Tipu Jayanti celebrations being held here on Friday November 10.

BJP district minority president Franklin Monteiro who tried to break the security cordon and barge into the premises was arrested by the police.

The police have barricaded all the entrances and conducted thorough inspection of the premises.

Every individual entering the premises has to produce valid identity card. Those without identity cards are being turned away.

Franklin Monteiro came to the venue all alone.

Programme

District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai inaugurated the Tipu Jayanti celebrations, along with food and civil supplies minister U T Khader and others. The programme has been organized by the district administration, zilla panchayat, and Kannada and culture department.

The dignitaries paid floral tribute to a portrait of Tipu Sultan and inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.

Addressing the gathering, Rai said, “When you hear the name Tipu, a picture of bravery and nationalism flashes across your mind. There are some forces trying to change history, but one can never change the truth. They are also trying to bury Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru’s contribution to the nation too. They are introducing their own historians as part of their agenda. There is a big difference between old and current historians. The olden day historians were never influenced by anyone. They wrote what they witnessed. So the history of Tipu is correct which we read and studied in our childhood.

"The state government's decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanthi has been criticized by some people. They have spread false information about Tipu and branded him as an anti-Hindu and communal leader. But the critics have never studied Tipu’s story in depth. When Peshwa of Maratha tried to conquer Sringeri Math and chased the Pontiff to Karkala and also destroyed the statue of Sharadambe, Tipu defended the Math and the pontiff successfully. Also, he did many good deeds to the Kollur temple. Hence, he is the symbol of communal harmony.

"Today the state government is celebrating the birthday of Tipu to praise his good deeds and his patriotism. By this celebration, we are trying to introduce Tipu to the new generation. President Ram Nath Kovind, during his last visit to the state, praised Tipu’s bravery and communal harmony. He also mentioned that Tipu used rockets for war and it is a milestone in Indian scientific history.

"Some people who are took photographs with Tipu’s sword are now opposing him. It is a part of political hypocrisy. My kind request to these people is that if you are not interested in the celebration, please do not participate or celebrate. No one is forcing you to be part of the programme. But do not create trouble in the society in the name of Tipu.

"We should not forget our freedom fighters and their sacrifice. Tipu Sultan is also a part of the nation’s fight for freedom. So as a nationalist, it is our duty to give him due respect," he concluded.

A book on Tipu, published by state broadcast and information department, was released by Ramanath Rai.

MLA J R Lobo presided over the programme. Addressing the gathering, Lobo said, “It is common to pay tribute, give respect and remember some special people who have built our nation. Tipu Sultan was a king who tried to build the state of Kannada. He was a king who defeated the British in war. Recognizing his contribution, we are celebrating his birth anniversary.

"We have to pick out good things from history. That will lead towards a peaceful society. Tipu was a ruler who did many good things to the citizens. His kingdom was known for good governance and communal harmony. If there were some minor mistakes in his administration, it does means he was wrong.

Narrating a story from the Bible, he said, "Jesus was at the Mount of Olives. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. They said to Jesus, ‘This woman was caught in the act of adultery. The Law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?’ Jesus said, ‘All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!’ When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. Jesus forgave her and allowed her to go. This story shows that we all commit sins and do mistakes. Hence, we do not have the right to punish or criticize others. In the case of Tipu, we should see his positive deeds."

“In some cases, Tipu’s plans were handed wrongly by the lower officers of his administration. That does not mean that Tipu made the mistake. Former prime minister late Indira Gandhi declared emergency with good intention. But some administrative personnel handled it very badly.

“Hence, on this Tipu Jayanti, we should remember his good deeds, patriotism, good governance and communal harmony,” he said.

MLA Shakuntala Shetty, DC Sasikanth Senthil, mayor Kavita Sanil, MUDA president K Suresh Ballal, Tulu Sahitya Academy president A.C Bhandari, ZP president Mohammad Monu, ZP CEO Dr M R Ravi, and others were present.

From where did Lobam learn that Tipu defeated the British? If history is to study only the good deeds and positive aspects of the kings, then which subject will teach their atrocities and wrongdoings? Was he speaking of history or telling a story?

I strongly object MLA's historically ignorant and covering up statements!
Truth matters. Let him open up Wikipedia and how many people Butcher TIPU killed?
He would have definitely spoken up with ancestors.
What good TIPU has done? by killing our ancestors?
If TIPU fought British, why did he ganged up with French? Out of patriotism?

He is misinformed, misguided and lost his way to heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Were was he when churches got burned, priests and nuns got abused?
Its one thing to fight for a JUST cause - its entirely a different agenda when fighting for self enhancement - at the expense of your own family and next to kin.

    Good Luck Montybab!

We know Tipu persecuted Christians, but that was two and half century ago. But what about the current Tipu Sultans who attack our churches, enter churches and schools, beat up 100% of church congregations, that too in most delicate parts of the body, use toxic & poisonus expired tear gas shells by accusing Christians of stone pelting, which stones they themselves collected from stream banks, transported by pick-ups, surrounded the church goers and themselves pelted.

What about the Tipu Sultans who did not admit the injured in hospitals and file their FIRs, but did exactly the opposite by booking the innocents.

We are Christians, who will forgive our enemies but will not forget and commit the same blunders by supporting the perpetrators or their supporters, who are in the guise of so called minority representatives of the BJP. We know God will be their judge and he has judged a few of the perpetrators so far.

Just carrying a minority name does not make one a member of that particular minority community. It is a sick mentality & trick of the BJP to select these kind of people, who are their chelas as so called minority representatives. This is BJP's cunningness, and sick mind to divide the minority communites. This particular guy is a goon, who is well known to terrorise priests & members of the very community, whom he is supposed to represent & defend. Can a donkey become a zebra merely by drawing stripes on its body? is my question.

What a pity. Tipu Jayanti celebration should not be glorified at least in South Canara where Tipu carried out merciless actions on the Christian community. I pity the local Christian leaders. When stone pelting issue was there they protested but they are glorifiying the merciless murderous actions on our ancestral community.

BJP never considered minorities as its vote bank..it is congress which consider you as votebank...but there are good number of people who belongs to minority community who still support BJP and they knew the reality.... But here lets keep the politics apart and analyze... you always supported congress but what you got? As appeasement tactics they are celebrating this by ditching Christians...right? Dont vote for BJP but dont blindly support congress also....At least Franklin stood up and opposed but why others especially religious leaders are mum on this?

Todays environment, we have hell lot of persons who try to poke their nose in every issues and try instigate. Motive is to sell their idea as there are many fakes and a big fake tea seller. During Tippu's campaigns of clamping down on groups that helped the British, Tipu Sultan targeted several Muslim groups, including the Mappila Muslims of Malabar, the Mahadevi Muslims, and the Nawabs of Sawanur and Nizam. He is not known to have treated them any better or differently to the several Hindu or Christian minority groups that helped the British, pointing to his policy being politically motivated, rather than religiously motivated

There is no doubt...Tippu tortured, killed and engaged DK Catholics into slavery his soldiers did whatever possible on women and girls of Christian community just over two centuries! Having said that no surprise by BJP's new found love for Christians considering their relation to infamous church attacks during Yeddy and his Archar leadership. Both Congress and BJP playing vote bank politics on this issue! I request both parties to do some desperately needed road repairs ignoring Tippu issues! Im sure both are not interested though their slogan is striving to serve people! In reality it is striving for power and big money!

Before you preach others about Tipu's tortures, do remember what the party that opposes Tipu Jayanti celebrations did to Christians' places of worship in Mangaluru just a few years back. Not only to Christians, do also remember what the party did to Muslims in Gujarat some years back.

Therefore, nobody is saint, neither Congress nor BJP but people find Congress better as compared to communal BJP. Let people support or oppose Tipu's present glorification but in the long run a party that is for peace and co-existence of communities will be preferred by people.

Madame Jennifer, You are in the wrong line .What did the BJP do to Christians in Mlore.? The Christians protested and they were arrested and Lati charged by the Police. Its a part & parcel of every protest when you go against the law. Also in Gujarat, What instigated the riots? 60 odd Karsevaks were first burnt to death in Godhra! and hence the retaliation. If not for this incident, the 2002 riots would not have happened at all. Yes on the co-existence part , the peoples mandate is very clear, We all see who is being booted out of power, state to state. Just by wearing a Tilak during elections & runnin from temple to temple, does not make a leader secular. Moreover, You cannot blame God and Modi all the time.
