Indore: Sr Rani Maria beatified, her killer Samandar is changed man now

Daijiworld Media Network - Indore

Indore, Nov 4: Sr Rani Maria, the Keralite nun who was stabbed to death in Madhya Pradesh 22 years ago was beatified by the Vatican in a ceremony in Indore on Saturday, November 4.

Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints Cardinal Angelo Amato who arrived from the Vatican presided over the ceremony. He read the announcement from Pope Francis. After beatification, Sister Rani Maria was called as Blessed Sister Maria. ‘Blessed’ is a stage before sainthood.

Stabbed 54 times

Sr Rani Maria, a nun from Franciscan Clarist congregation was working with landless labourers in Madhya Pradesh. She conducted camps informing them about government subsidies and loans and in the process, which upset money lenders.

In December 1994, a clash broke out between the tribals and the villagers of Semlia Raimal in which in a moneylender was injured. Sr Maria helped some tribals, who were arrested following the clash, come out on bail.

The moneylenders hired Samandar Singh who stabbed Rani Maria 54 times on a bus from Udainagar to Indore on February 25, 1995. Singh absconded into the forest with his aides Jeevan and Dharmendra and was arrested three days later.

Killer is a changed man now

A day before the beatification, there was a visitor near Rani Maria’s memorial who was crying tears of repentance. It was Samandar Singh who had killed Rani by stabbing her 54 times with a knife.

Singh has completed his life-sentence. After committing the heinous crime, he was abandoned by the people who had hired him to kill Sr Rani. He lived with guilt. In 2002, Sr Rani’s sibling Sr Selmy Paul visited him on Raksha Bandhan and forgave him by tying him a ‘Rakhi’. She said that the family has pardoned him. This incident changed him completely.

Today, he has dedicated his life to social work and helps patients from underprivileged families. He earns his living by farming and is also imparting farming lessons to youngsters. He has visited Sr Rani’s family in Kerala four times after his release.

Whenever he gets time, he visits Sr Rani’s memorial and offers prayers. The memorial is built on the same spot, where Singh had killed her. It bears the words, “Lord, do not hold this sin against him.”

Let us all learn to live and die in the service of our suffering, less fortunate bretheren, just as Sr. Rani Maria did. Let's also appreciate the value of true repentance, as in the case of Samandar Singh.

God will certainly reward us a million fold, for this.

It should go without saying that we see the needs of the downtrodden and poor and we should advive and help. I am deeply impressed what she did and the way she looked after the poor.

" She conducted camps informing them about government subsidies and loans and in the process, which upset money lenders."

She made the poor aware of possibilities, adviced and supported them. She did a lot and dedicated her life to serve the poor.

" After beatification, Sister Rani Maria was called as Blessed Sister Maria. ‘Blessed’ is a stage before sainthood."

I hope that young people will take her as an example . Kurt Waschnig, Oldenbur

Priests and Nuns are chosen by Jesus as He chose his Apostles. They are close to God filled with Holy Spirit for their sacrifice and service to humanity. What a big heart blessed Rani's family have. Surely it is due to the presence of Holy Spirit in them. Blessed Rani saved a soul and transformed Saul to Paul by sacrificing her life. Blessed Sister Rani, please pray for us.

Why do Christians think that deeds of great souls will be elevated to importance only after beatification or canonization?

When you increase the number of canonization, the greatness of sainthood diminishes. It happened with national awards and rajyothsava awards here!

In this current world of religion in politics, sometime we wonder, whether the Creator of the Universe, the one and only Super Power, the most compassionate and forgiving, has become so weak, that His creation need to fight among themselves to protect "GOD"?? Just because of our pride and following a few power hungry, we people commit crimes against our own human nature. Do not understand why we do this?? who is benefited?? The common people who becomes victims and lose life, whereas the few instigators or motivators of these crimes enjoy life, without thinking about the commons who lose life for them. Its time to look at Samandar Singh and change our attitude towards God and our fellow beings. How can we respect God, whom nobody has seen if we hurt our follow human beings, whom God created without any difference according to Religion, cast or creed. its time that we stop fighting in the name of God and understand that God does not need humans to protect him, who Himself created humans.. Forgiveness has the power...

    Well said Sir.
God, religion and faiths...everything is man made.
People stand beside a patient in the ICU and pray to God for his recovery. The fact what they do not understand is that, if God was powerful enough to cure, why did he let the patient fall sick in the first place?

@Ivar mangalore,Looks like you are not believing in God.One cant see God ,is unvisible. We feel only he is there and give strenght when we need som ehelp. To answer your question, why he does us to suffer, sick is simple to test us .we ,how much firm we are in our belief ,do we go against rules like do we sinn what is forbidden is .like lie, kill other,do harm others.some do fall sick because they dont live life as needed.they drink alcohol forexample.some eat too much.some drive fast,so cause accidents and either die ,or get admitted. But truth is everyone has to die.many of us call God to help only when we need it.otherwise we forget him to pray to help others in need etc

The Western Christian countries. Systematically invaded and looted Rich Asian and African countries . Destroyed their economy and made them poor. Now the missionaries from Western countries are converting the poor to their so called Christianity.

There are only two religion on this planet earth which do not practice religion conversions, Hinduism and Jews. Must be born to be Hindu or Jews.

The Caste system is also created by invaders in India. We had only four Verna system.

It is sad to see that you wrote your nasty comment on this beautiful article. A nun who was doing good to the poor and downtrodden was uncontrollable by your own religion people the upper caste. The person who murdered her was forgiven by her family members. But you vomited your venom on this article also. God forgive this Manju, Mumbai. Give him wisdom and light. I pray for you.

Manju, Mumbai....you say that, the Caste system is also created by invaders in India. We had only four Verna system.

So you mean to say, Aghori sadhus are also created by Invaders ?
(Aghori members are asect who worship Shiva. They believe that Shiva created everything – they consider nothing to be bad. For this reason they engage in a variety of sexual practices, they drink alcohol, take drugs, and eat meat. Nothing is considered taboo.
The more bizarre tradition is they are also practicing cannibals and their temples are cremation grounds - their clothing comes from the dead, his firewood comes from the funeral pyres, and food from the river. When a person is cremated, an Aghori will coat himself in the ashes of the body and meditate on the dead. The most shocking aspect of the Aghori life is their cannibalism. Dead bodies that are found floating in the river are gathered up and meditated on. The limbs are then removed by the Aghori and eaten raw).

Madhya pradesh has given hard time for Christians. It is sad but only forgiveness helps people to believe in god of thier crime. Orissa has done lots of torture for Christians. It is a only ways to forgive and show christ love and mercy towards those who hates the Christians. Jesus never fails us when we follow his path to help the downtrodden and poor.

Need a very big heart to forgive for such a cruel crime. Its only possible to those who are closer to God than any worldly glitters.

God would have not punished if they had not forgiven, but forgiveness is superior than revenge. This is a great sacrifice. Surely such act will never go in vain.

Ahmed thank you for your good words. Fundamental teaching of Jesus is forgive your enemy and love your neighbors as you love yourself. When that teaching is thought in churches and schools then core life of Christians are forgiveness and help the needy. That is why so many refuges given second chance in Europe and North America mostly catholic dominated nation. God continue to bless this eath withforgiveness and peace for all mankind.

    And yet,
    - the ten commandments conveniently ignores commanding against slavery but still goes on to repeat God's upmanship in the first four commandments; and
    - the so called Christians / Catholics of Western Europe and east coast America kept the slave trade alive for 400 years.
How do you morally reconcile this with your God's "forgiveness"?

Rampant, look at Singh feel guilty of his own errors he has done to this nun. Slaves are enjoying thier life today better than yours and all of them are glad to leave India and Africa those days. Today they enjoy the fruits of thier slavery. Without pain no gain. Here in this case Singh is a change man. Time will help you to change in the christ of love. Christ love is unlimited and unimaginable. His mercy from cross can change anyone even the devil shakes when he hear the word of christ. Christ is the way and truth. Without that life has no meaning of love.

You brought a good point. but off late those who kept them slaves fought themselves and gave them freedom and a brilliant future in those white peoples countries. The countries who sold them for slavery is still under slavery till this date. You people never came to help them for their freedom. Yet you people know to point out this is the sad part.
