Mangaluru: Roads, drainage dominate 'phone-in' discussions with Mayor

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Oct 28: Mayor Kavitha Sanil, on Friday, October 27, said that rain was an obstacle to roads repairs within the corporation limits and that officials would take up the work in a day or two.

She was speaking at the phone-in programme at the corporation office.

A woman called up asking why corporation roads were not repaired whereas highways and some other roads were.

“Have you travelled by a two-wheeler? Have you travelled on the road between Balmatta and Pumpwell ? I met with an accident just a while ago when going on the Balmatta-Mahaveera Circle stretch of the road, while avoiding a pothole. My mother was also injured. We escaped coming under the bus by a whisker. I am injured. Who is responsible for this? Are you taking responsibility for the loss sustained by us?” asked the woman.

Works worth Rs 54 crore

Citizens also complained about drainage water pipes being too close to the drinking water pipes in Suratkal, Alape and Padil. They said the drainage water flowed in the open.

“Drainage works worth Rs 54 crore are aimed to set drainage connections right. The work is part of the second stage of work by ADB, in the Alape-Padil area. Tenders will be called, and work will start in November,” she said.

Mayor Kavitha said the drainage water flowing on the road in Chilimbi would be inspected.

When a woman complained about a pipeline being damaged on the Kuloor-Kavoor road, causing a scarcity of water, the mayor said, "The new pipeline will be installed, and the problem will be solved in a few days."

Answering a complaint regarding a new bridge at Alake, she said, "The sewer in the earlier proposal was small. The new proposal has a big sewer. The work will start by December after the tendering process. Potholes will be closed.”

Other complaints included a tempo spreading thrash near Bejai, KSRTC while doing business there, an illegal bar coming up in the hotel parking area at Kottara, contrary to the idea of clean Mangaluru advertisement boards hung on electric poles for three months in front of Commissioner’s Bungalow in Mannagudde. Another complaint was about an illegal petty shop in Mullakad being converted to a concrete structure without water meter reading, and a request for pesticides to be sprayed in Kadri to remedy the mosquito menace.

Anybody can be a Mayor in Mangalore with the right connections of the Cong leaders . Like every Mayor, this one too is just a name sake. First six months will go in chasing out poor vendors , goodu angadis etc. just to show off. We have seen that. This 'phone in' is another 'show baazi'. Nothing is going to happen to the gen public, They will run after big contracts where they can make huge money. Thats it.

In Mangalore problems lies mostly on broken deteriorated roads, absent of footpaths, drains and other basic requirements. So this has to be set right first. Without such developments how could our Mangalore become a smart City.

Karate Mayor tried to divert yesterdays assault episode with this new 'call ' gimmick in full Media Glare. Only 2-3% will be attended , depending on how strong the person who complained and which faction he belongs. The rest will be ignored. As always the 2nd term of every Mayor is to rake in the Moolah and to ensure she has enough to sustain a retired life.

We have a problem with the sewage overflowing from the drain sump inside our compound which flows from the manhole from the bottom. The problem aggravated when a caterer started operations in a residential area.( I do not know how he got the license). Where instead of throwing the waste garbage to the garbage dump it is put in the sewage pipes. In spite of repeated requests to the Corporator commissioner nothing is done. None of the neighbours will join in though the sewage in one compound will effect health ground water all around. If Why are we paying taxes. Why are rules being flouted to help a few at the expense of others. It is all well that illegal dens are raided . But what about this misery brought on the helpless citizens. Jai hind.

I have not seen any excellent work from our Mayor . So far normal work going on by routine work like past Mayors did. Most of the place no drains no footpath, traffic system is worst. Central market area is in a mess. Many places drainage is not proper way.

The Dan ( karate expert) I mean the Mayor of the city should not answer queries by phone should be at ground zero, let her visit Sturrock road (Falnir) and find stones flying. Looks like the corporators are not interested because it is a border of two wards. The Mayor should look into it.
