Bengaluru: Tipu Jayanti: CM warns action against trouble-makers

Bengaluru, Oct 24 (DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday warned that strict action would be taken against those who take the law into their hands on the occasion of Tipu Sultan Jayanti scheduled on November 10.

“The BJP leaders are trying to divide the society. Yeddyurappa had praised Tipu Sultan when he was in the KJP. This shows his double standards,” he told reporters on seeking his reaction to the BJP threatening to launch a protest against the government’s decision to organise the Jayanti.

He charged the BJP with misleading people on Tipu Sultan. Tipu was born in Devanahalli near Bengaluru. He died while fighting against British forces. The BJP should not try to twist history, he added.

Well,.. it seems to be pass-time of majority in India to bash British rule in India. But below are the points that British rule did to India:

1.Unified the nation. Before the British ruled us, India was nothing but a bunch of Princely states ruled by various Kings. The British Raj united all these kingdoms with treaties and alliances, thus creating the country that it is.

    2. Adoption of English language.
No matter what you say, you can’t deny the fact that because we know English we have a global edge.

    3. Education
They made western education accessible to the masses.

    4. Public reforms
They bought postal services, Indian Penal Code, Indian Civil Services and judiciary system to India, because prior to that justices was at the mercy of the prince.

    5. Indian Railways
Now amongst one the largest railway networks Indian railways founding stone was actually laid by The British.

    6. Infrastructure
Dams, ports, roads, hill stations, town halls, parliament, they built it all. Thank you for discovering Darjeeling, Shimla, Ooty and Lonavala, but we would have done sooner or later. Improved medical and sanitation situation as they built the drainage system.

    7. Irrigation
British came to India primarily for trade purpose, they incited more and more farmers to grow cash crops and further added agricultural land, also introduced irrigation.

    8. Social reforms
They banned sati, untouchability, and child marriage, also encouraged widow’s re-marriage.

    9. The army
The army that we are so proud of currently was formed in the British era. A lot of the army practices and etiquettes still persist.

    10. Export hub
During this time the export of cash crops, spices and textiles.

Now that being said, The successive govt after the independence have achieved very little. CM wants to bash British and claim that a tyrant to fought British for his own selfish reasons was a freedom fighter. So CM what has your party done??

I would like to add that I read an article recently which stated how the politicians use British rule as an excuse to their own incompetencies. Modern politicians bash British rule for all reasons. Actually, the freedom fighters like Gandhi and Nehru viewed British differently. Though they were fighting British for the independence they had deep respect for British. Of course, they had that because they were well educated. they knew what British have done and they thought that India was good enough to continue to be a great nation. But they were wrong. The subsequent govts that ruled India was plagued by corruption. India remained poor because of mismanagement and bureaucracy. The leaders started to give the reasons of poverty were the looting of India by British and this has been fed to us ever since.

What really makes me angry is that the very political party that failed us now wants to celebrate the birthday of the tyrant who fought British. Just imagine... what would have been tipus end game? would he abdicate his position and introduce a democratic govt??? no, he surely would not. All the rulers who fought British just to serve their own interest. the concept of a unified nation only originated in the late 19th century.

Now we india's have to learn twisted history from RSS & BJP Lead people. We cannot change the History. History is after all History.

    True Caller,

What twisted history are you talking about? The atrocities committed by tipu are a well-known fact. What you and many other tipu supporters are doing is ignoring all his atrocities and just pointing out that he fought/killed British.

Just check history whether the lives of the people got better under British rule. they surely did. simply because whatever British might have done they never went on a rampaging and killing off a mass number of people or destroying their temples. The reason today south India is a Hindu majority is because of British. if British did not defeat British then Tippu would have converted or kill all of them... same goes for Christians. If tipu was so good to Hindus as many of his supporters claim to be then why did Maratha side with British(who were a threat to them) to defeat tipu?? Martha had nothing much to gain by supporting British. but they saw that tipu was more threat to them and hindus than British.

I don't see the reason why people hate British rule so much when they are the one that brought India under one rule which resulted in we have a country called India today. british actually did a lot of good things that helped India. Having a democracy is one of them. many of the barbaric practices were abolished, schools were set up. Just look what happened after independence. we actually went backwards in many areas. corruption ran rampant. Most of the problems of India are the direct result of the govt which were in power after independence. corrupt politicians started to blame everything on British to fool people. and stupid people (which are a spectacular majority ) believed it and still believe it. Just think... in 1945 world war 2 ended. germany and Japan were destroyed. india got independence in 1947. just see how these countries progressed. so please stop blaming British.

    SAM, MLR.,

''he was a king, during the war anything could happen, no one see the religion while fighting against opposition,''
-you are so wrong on this point. He committed atrocities against selective people. Not all. Mangalorean Catholics actually did not put up a fight against him, but the took shelter inside the walls of Mangalore fort. They were under siege for several months. Later when they surrendered many were killed, in fact nearly 5000 men were slaughtered and their bodies were thrown in the river. more than 60000 were taken to Mysore to be converted or killed. I have studied history in detail and i am really good at noticing the differences in motives of kings/generals for their actions.

''what about Gujarat mass killing during the current PM's reign''
-completely false accusation. If he was responsible why couldn't the central govt at the time did not prove it? they actually tried every possible way but just could not prove it. After becoming the PM he has visited many muslim countries. If they really thought that he committed the atrocities why would they welcome him??
I am not his fan either but, the accusation against him don't have any proof.

what about demolishing Babri Masjid, could you accept this?.
-When some idiot politicians rally up stupid people to do something and then it gets out of hand is what results in an incident like Babri masjid demolition. I would definitely like to see the chief perpetrators in jail.

'' It shows the double standard adopted by few people against one particular peace-loving community. Remember truth always prevail.''
-You can call the community that you are referring anything but peace-loving it is not. Check out the daily news around the world... they are in conflict with other community everywhere. Have you heard of a saying -'' if everybody has a problem with you then its most likely that the real problem is you'', this seems to aptly describe your community.

    Dear Rajesh,

During the Maratha–Mysore War in 1791, the Maratha Empire's army raided the temple and matha of Sringeri Shankaracharya, killing and wounding many people including Brahmins, plundering the monastery of all its valuable possessions, and desecrating the temple by displacing the image of goddess Sarada. The incumbent Shankaracharya petitioned Tipu Sultan for help. A bunch of about 30 letters written in Kannada, which were exchanged between Tipu Sultan's court and the Sringeri Shankaracharya were discovered in 1916 by the Director of Archaeology in Mysore.

Tipu defeated the Maratha Empire. The Marathas later sacked Hindu temples in his kingdom, such as Sringeri Sharada Peetham, which Tipu Sultan rebuilt.

Mysore Gazettes Srikantaiah has listed 156 temples to which Tipu regularly paid annual grants. There is such evidence as grant deeds, and correspondence between his court and temples, and his having donated jewellery and deeded land grants to several temples, which some claim he was compelled to do to make alliances with Hindu rulers. Between 1782 and 1799 Tipu Sultan issued 34 "Sanads" (deeds) of endowment to temples in his domain, while also presenting many of them with gifts of silver and gold plate. The Srikanteswara Temple in Nanjangud still possesses a jewelled cup presented by the Sultan. He also gave a greenish linga; to Ranganatha temple at Srirangapatna he donated seven silver cups and a silver camphor burner. This temple was hardly a stone's throw from his palace from where he would listen with equal respect to the ringing of temple bells and the muezzin's call from the mosque; to the Lakshmikanta Temple at Kalale he gifted four cups, a plate and Spitoon in silver.
