Bengaluru: Tipu Sultan's descendants mulling legal action against Ananthkumar Hegde

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Oct 23: The descendants of Tipu Sultan are mulling legal action against union minister of state for skill development Anantkumar Hegde over his tweet referring to Tipu Sultan as 'brutal killer, wretched fanatic and mass rapist'.

Bakhtiar Ali, a lawyer and one of the sixth generation descendants of Prince Mooniruddin, who was one of Tipu Sultan’s sons, said that the descendants were pained and humiliated by the minister’s tweet.

Alleging Hegde of defaming the Tiger of Mysore and tarnishing the image of Tipu Sultan, he said that the remarks were unacceptable. A meeting will be held among the family members and a collective decision on how to act against such unfounded comments will be taken, he said.

In a letter to the Karnataka government, the Union Minister had informed not to include his name on the list of invitees for the programmes scheduled on November 10 to mark Tipu Sultan Jayanti. He had warned to disclose Tipu’s bad history on stage, if invited citing protocol.

Another descendant of Tipu Sultan, Shahid Alam said that Hegde should have read writings of historians before commenting derogatorily. He demanded that Hedge should tender an unconditional apology for insulting the 18th century ruler of Mysore.

Bengaluru-based businessman Sahabzada Mansoor Ali Tipu said he would meet Karnataka home minister Ramalinga Reddy on Tuesday October 24 and may also file a complaint with the police. "On behalf of the descendants of Tipu Sultan, I am lodging a complaint against Hegde for calling our forefather a mass rapist and brutal killer," he told news agency PTI.

Ali said he would seek necessary action for Hegde's "uncalled for" comments on Tipu, who fought against the British.

"Being a union minister, he should not have made such irresponsible comments against a ruler who is revered as a hero in Karnataka. I seek an unconditional apology and necessary action against Hegde for his comments," he said.

Alleging that Hegde's comments could stoke "communal sentiments", he demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi drop him from his council of ministers. "The tweets of Hegde are distasteful and hurt not only family sentiments, but also the sentiments of the country. PM Modi should sack him as Union minister," he said.

Ali, who said he was a 7th generation descendant of Tipu Sultan, added that he was in touch with others in the family, including Bakhtiar Ali in Kolkata, who is contemplating taking legal action against Hegde.

Hegde had stirred a row after he requested the Karnataka government not to include his name in programme invitations for Tipu Jayanti celebrations. "(I have) conveyed (to) Karnataka government not to invite me to the shameful event of glorifying a person known as a brutal killer, wretched fanatic and mass rapist," Hegde said in a Tweet on October 20.

The BJP leader had also written to the chief secretary and Uttara Kannada deputy commissioner, asking them to direct the state government not to include his name in the programme invitations to mark the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan.

In 2016, Hegde had flayed the state government for celebrating Tipu Jayanti, claiming that the ruler was "against Kannada language and anti-Hindu".

Subsequently, Hegde was arrested for threatening to disrupt celebrations in the Uttara Kannada district.

The government's decision to celebrate the day on November 10 last year had been criticised by the BJP and RSS, who termed the act of the Congress as "minority appeasement".

The Siddaramaiah-led government is all set to celebrate Tipu Jayanti despite widespread protests and violence that had marred celebrations in the last two years.

If the descendants of Tipu claim right to sue the minister, they are also duty bound to apologize for the atrocities committed by their ancestor, just as the Pope apologized to the Jews for the church’s passive stand during World War II.

    Tipu’s crackdown against Kodavas.

Like in Mangalore Tipu committed atrocities in Coorg .After successfully suppressing rebellion of kodavas (natives of Coorg) and conquering Coorg , Tipu marched into their territory and He warned kodavas that if any further rebellion took place he would extinguish it by removing the population and "Islamizing" them. At a later period he actually carried this barbarous threat into execution, devastating the province, and driving the wretched inhabitants like sheep to Sri Ranga Pattanam, where they had to submit to circumcision and the sanctifying rites prescribed by the mullahs (source: Hyderali and Tipu Sultan By Lewin B.Bowring , 1899) .

Documents suggest around 500 Kodavas were killed and over 40,000 fled to the woods and concealed themselves in the mountains., and 60,000 to 80,000 Kodavas were captured and sent to SriRangaPattanam who were either forcibly converted or Murdered .

Tipu in one of his letter boasts about this Coorg Conquest :-
"We proceeded with the utmost speed, and, at once, made prisoners of 40,000 occasion-seeking and sedition-exciting Coorgis, who alarmed at the approach of our victorious army, had slunk into woods, and concealed themselves in lofty mountains, inaccessible even to birds. Then carrying them away from their native country (the native place of sedition) we raised them to the honour of Islam, and incorporated them into our Ahmedy corps."

Forced conversion of Catholic Christians of Mangalore:-

Mangalore was once ruled by Hyder Ali, but after second Mysore war (which Hyder Ali lost ) British gained control of this region. Tipu soon after coming to power waged battle against Britishers and regained its control In 1784 .

What followed after conquest was barbaric atrocities against catholic Christians . Unlike his father Hyder Ali who respected other faiths. Tipu was a fanatic Muslim, he displayed his zeal for the faith of Islam by driving out Christians of coast region, Number of people driven out vary between 30,000-80,000 based on various historical accounts.

Tipu ordered his subordinates to prepare a list of Christians who were residing in Canara region capture them and send them to SriRangaPattanam under guidance of trusty officers. Following orders Tipu’s commanders seized 60,000 Christians including women and children. Once captured all these 60K Christians were deported to SriRangapattana. In SriRangapattanam under the command of officers Christians were forcefully converted to Islam. These unfortunate people received the title of ' Ahmadi” or praiseworthy,' and the date of their forcible conversion was commemorated by the phrase, 'God is the protector of the religion of Ahmad” (source: Hyderali and Tipu Sultan By Lewin B.Bowring , 1899)

Documents suggest that about 1/3rd of the people (Around 20,000) died en rout to SriRangapattana and Due to ill treatment of Captives in Srirangapattana Dungeons around 30,000 People perished.

Tipu’s atrocities against Catholic women in Mangalore

Tipu demanded the surrender of the daughters of some of these native (mangalorean) Christians in order to have them placed in his palace, and that, on the refusal of the parents, the latter had their noses, ears, and upper lips cut off, and were then paraded through the streets on asses, with their faces towards the tails of the animals.

If the descendants of the tyrant`s can sue Anant Kumar Hegde for his tweets which mentioned factual things that the tyrant did, then the descendants of the Hindus and Christians also can sue the tyrant`s descendants for reparations.

If they cannot give reparations then at least an acknowledgement of atrocities and apology would be enough.

These are the excerpts from tipus to his commanders ,

Letter dated March 22, 1788, to Abdul Kadir: "Over 12,000 Hindus were 'honoured' with Islam. There were many Namboodiris (Brahmins) among them. This achievement should be widely publicised among the Hindus. There the local Hindus should be brought before you and then converted to Islam. No Namboodiri (Brahmin) should be spared. Also they should be confined there till the dress materials sent for them, reach you."

Letter dated December 14, 1788, to his Army Chief in Calicut: "I am sending two of my followers with Mir Hussain Ali. With their assistance, you should capture and kill all Hindus. Those below 20 may be kept in prison and 5,000 from the rest should be killed by hanging from the tree-tops. These are my orders."

Letter dated December 21, 1788, to Sheik Kutub: "242 Nairs are being sent as prisoners. Categorise them according to their social and family status. After honouring them with Islam, sufficient dress materials may be given to the men and their women."

Letter dated January 18, 1790, to Syed Abdul Dulai: "With the grace of Prophet Muhammed and Allah, almost all Hindus in Calicut are converted to Islam. Only a few are still not converted on the borders of Cochin State. I am determined to convert them also very soon. I consider this as Jehad to achieve that object."

Letter dated January 19, 1790, to Badroos Saman Khan: "Don't you know that I have achieved a great victory recently in Malabar and over 4 lakh Hindus were converted to Islam. I am now determined to march against that 'Cursed Raman Nair' without delay. (Reference is to Rama Varma Raja of Travancore State who was popularly known as Dharma Raja for giving shelter in his state to all those who fled Malabar.)

Historian B. A. Saletare has described Tipu Sultan as a defender of the Hindu dharma, who also patronised other temples including one at Melkote, for which he issued a Kannada decree that the Shrivaishnava invocatory verses there should be recited in the traditional form. The temple at Melkote still has gold and silver vessels with inscriptions indicating that they were presented by the Sultan. Tipu Sultan also presented four silver cups to the Lakshmikanta Temple at Kalale.[74] Tipu Sultan does seem to have repossessed unauthorised grants of land made to Brahmins and temples, but those which had proper sanads (certificates) were not. It was a normal practice for any ruler, Muslim or Hindu, on his accession or on the conquest of new territory.

For your Knowledge, no body is celebrating tippu jayanti in the mosques and religious places. Karnataka was earlier Mysore State, and Tippu Sultan was real Hero and Tiger of this region, so the achievements are being celebrated by State Government, this is not a particualr communities event else this would not have been celebrating all these decades.

And for your pain on Islamic practices are concerned, you can raise your voice to provide open beef market in India as Islam permits having beef.

Has any secular Congi glance over inscription that Tipu curved on his sword , it says "My victorious sabre (sword) is lightning for the destruction of the unbelievers." Some people never get tired of saying how helpful Tipu was towards Hindus.

Let us not forget that Tipu was ruling an essentially Hindu kingdom. There were hardly any Muslims in his kingdom (if you exclude those he focribly converted).

So Tipu's survival depended on pleasing the Hindus.

Hence the special gifts to the temples. Not for the love of Hindus or the temples.

Tipu was thoroughly an anti-national. He had made treaties with certian European governments of the time. Tipu was the Siraj ud-Daulah of the South. Siraj ud-Daulah's treaties with the East India Company destroyed the local Indian rule in Bengal just a few decades earlier.

The only good thing that came out of the treaties with the European Governments was an attempt by Napoleon to plan a visit to India that ended up with the unbelievable accidental discovery of the Rosetta stone by the French troops - which allowed the French and others to find a way read the ancient Egyptian writings of the Pharaos.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, in his Tipu Sultan Shaheed Memorial Lecture in Bangalore (30 November 1991), called Tipu Sultan the innovator of the world's first war rocket. Two of these rockets, captured by the British at Srirangapatna, were displayed in the Royal Artillery Museum in London. According to historian Dr Dulari Qureshi Tipu Sultan was a fierce warrior king and was so quick in his movement that it seemed to the enemy that he was fighting on many fronts at the same time.[31] Tipu managed to subdue all the petty kingdoms in the south.
