Puttur: Life term imprisonment meted out to husband for wife's murder

Puttur, Oct 22: Puttur fifth additional magistrate has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife one and half years ago.

Bagirathi wife of the accused was murdered at Bairaguri colony, Mundooru grama panchayat limits on April 11, 2016. Rural police had arrested Vijay, husband of the deceased for murdering his wife. Both husband and wife were alcohol addicts. They had quarrelled on the day of the incident. The husband slit the neck of the wife with a knife. The wife succumbed to the serious injury.

The husband had not revealed this to anyyone. As the stench of the decomposed body spread, he asked the neighbours for a shovel and spade. The news of this then spread and police were informed.

Quantum of punishment:
Accused Vijay is sentenced to life imprisonment under section 302 and Rs ten thousand fine. On failure to pay the fine he will be liable to an additional six months in jail. The court has ordered for Rs 3,000 to be handed over to each of his three children out of the fine and compensation under section 357.

Maximum possible compensation should be provided through district legal services authority under section 357 A. The amount can be obtained from the elder sister of Bagirathi in whose care the children are on submitting an application. As the accused is sentenced to life imprisonment he is not entitled to any pardon under section 428, stated the court.
